:twocents: seems to me that in the end about 90% of coaches get fired. pete carroll, chip Kelley, many nba champion coaches, add nauseum

Coaches either stay on until they are fired, or move on before they are fired. Boosters with the money are usually behind it. Fans can be fickle. Hell, Stotts was NBA coach of the month in January and Blazer fans want him fired after this three game road trip.

Man these coaches are making good moves. Emmanuel Daigbe kid is a big target. Now the woods kid is a nice WR his self I remember him playing at U of W and his story alone should put butt's in seats. Davis or whoever they have at QB will have great hands and speed out there.

There are many coaches who are great recruiters but have few other coaching skills. Lorenzo Romar at UW is an example. Bruce Barnum may be another.

I don't think that I'd say that a NCAA men's basketball coach has few other coaching skills other than recruiting when they take their program to three sweet sixteens in a six year period. That guy had six 24+ win seasons in a eight year period. There's a little more going on there than recruiting.

Why did he get fired?

My comment was about your comparison about Romar and Barnum with regards to recruiting skills versus the accompanying coaching skills.

You have to understand I'm new to this program. So I don't know if the coach is good or not. From my understanding the team had a couple seasons with injuries. Last year I seen promise but didn't workout to well. This is a new year and the kid feels good about his brothers he came in with and I don't know him for sugarcoating anything he's more of it is what it is. So I guess i will have to wait and see. I will be up for the spring game.

Barnum took a great group of recruits from a well-known recruiter (Burton) and coached them to a home playoff game. Now its sounds like we are getting another group of talent to go with last season's talent. You have to admit, nowhere to go but up...

Talent is good, but it doesn't do any good if you lose your cool in front of 20,000 Montana hayseeds. That is where coaching comes in.

Finally something from Alan that I can agree with. 40 yards is a good benchmark for DI football (and yes, FCS is DI football). Punters should be able to net 40 yards per punt and kickers should be able to kick field goals from 40 yards out.

I am stoked about the signings, but I am still leery about special teams.

Finally something from Alan that I can agree with. 40 yards is a good benchmark for DI football (and yes, FCS is DI football). Punters should be able to net 40 yards per punt and kickers should be able to kick field goals from 40 yards out.

I am stoked about the signings, but I am still leery about special teams.

Count me in on the special teams comments.

After years of following the fortunes of Viking football I have concluded that optimism on that subject borders on irrationality. If going in to our home game with Northern Colorado on October 13 we are better than one and five I will be pleasantly surprised.

I can understand how you feel with a bunch of years of disappointment. Look at the bright side I'm here to cheer you up first beer on me.

If we aren't going into Fall camp with Barnum saying ______________________ is our starting quarterback I think we are in trouble. We are also in trouble if they try to change the QB to fit their plans instead of the other way around. Kuresa was a much better QB when they let him do what they brought him in to do, instead of roping him in during his final season. Barnum needs to figure out what this team is good at, and he better know by the end of spring ball and tailor his team to those strengths, If he doesn't we are in for another long year.

I was not a fan of his play calling under Burton and the last two season have brought me back into that camp. We don't need to be throwing in the same trick plays that have been on film for 6 seasons. Run the ball, pass the ball. If the run is working, go with it. If the pass is working go with it. Make sure you pass enough in a run game, so they don't pack in the middle. Make sure you run enough in the pass game so they respect the run. I have seen too many times when they would march the ball down the field running, only to pass three times in the red zone.....Or see them short pass to first down after first down, only to run the ball up the middle three times in a row to a clogged middle. I believe Barnum is the most predictable coach in the league in his play calling.

Keep your eye on the number of personal fouls on defense. if PSU is getting personal fouls, it's because they aren't being well coached on defense.

I know I'm coming off sounding pessimistic, that is not my intent. But there were some major flaws two years ago, that didn't get corrected last year.

The best way to be successful in this conference is to settle on a quarterback early and trust your decision throughout the season. The other thing is to hope to stay relatively injury free. You need to be able to score in this conference.

If you can't settle on a quarterback right away, you have to have a strong, stout defense to keep you in games until the offense comes around.

Teams that are playing musical quarterbacks throughout the season and can't stop anyone on defense generally will not do well.
