Let's see what this team looks like next year, right now. Does WSU have any freshman signees for next year yet?

Seniors -
Balint Mocsan (transfer)
Kham Davis
Michal Kozak
Dontay Bassett (transfer)
Isaiah Brown (transfer)

Juniors -
Sano Gasana (2019 walk on)
Zahir Porter (transfer)

Sophomores -
KJ Cunningham
Judah Jordan
Tim Fuller
Mitch Brizee (2019 walk-on)
Darweshi Hunter
Donatas Kupsas (redshirt)

Freshmen -

Offers -
Dillon Jones (?)

Lots of offers but all have committed or signed elsewhere. D1 programs are allotted 13 scholarships. If Mitch and Sano remain walk-ons then WSU has 2 more. Am I missing anyone?

Unless someone really good falls our way, I would expect the next two commitments to take a little longer. That's just my feeling on it. There will be a lot more transfers happening over the next few months. I would love to see Dillon sign, but I don't know where he is at in the process. :coffee:

I hope all the additions help, but it’s going to make for a difficult year. More so with the lack of opportunity to practice as a team with the virus still being a problem.

I’m not going to get excited until Rahe publicly announces that his new offense is trash and he’s going back to Weber State style of basketball, but looking at the players he’s recruiting, I think it’s just going to be more of the same. I hope we’re ready for the excuses next winter.... “ Players are learning a new system and at the same time getting to know each other, but I love this team because they play hard and for each other!”

I’m worried that with all the transfers and additions that we’re mortgaging our future. We’ve just cemented our future as a bottom tier team in the BSC.

Signing period for ALL sports has been extended and will run from April 15th to August 1st this year. Still no visits for a while. :coffee:

R squared is desperate and it shows by the players he has brought in with only one year of eligibility. I had heard him say in the past that he doesn't even consider grad transfers with only one year of eligibility. But now suddenly the cupboard is bare and we are coming off one of our most disappointing seasons ever. He is trying whatever it takes. Bovee mortgaged our future years ago with. the 8 year extension. Coach takes out a HELOC loan on our future every year when he runs the standard 2-3 guys off. I'm not really sure what you expected long term from this off-season. The basketball program is a mess.

I am excited for this reason. These are desperate moves that coaches make when they are starting to feel the heat. I have felt that coach has been way too comfortable lately. I get the sense that he is not very comfortable right now and we may be in a position to part ways after this next season. I really hope that the excuses stop, he is accountable and his players are accountable this next season.

With the graduation of Harding and John’s eligibility exhausted, the cupboard was empty. There wasn’t much in the cupboard anyway. With no changes Randy’s team would have been lucky to win 10 games. So, why not take some chances and go the mercenary route? It has worked before. Stan Mayhew and Stan Rose both only had a year of eligibility and we still know about them decades after they played their solitary season in Ogden. Can lightning strike again? We can only hope. I’m cautiously optimistic that these moves can restore luster in our Wildcat Basketball program. If not, we weren’t expecting much anyway. At least Randy is trying something new and changing his recruiting strategy. Maybe an old dog can learn some new tricks.

The season ended with the ship sinking. We had a mass exodus of players jumping off the ship. Unfortunately all I see are a number of guys signed to plug the holes in the ship! I hate to say this, cause I love my wildcats, but I see the ship completely sinking. We signed guys who couldn’t compete on other teams and we picked them up! I can see the Darweshi Hunter kid being a possible player. He is 6’5”, with length, shot a good percentage in division ll. I think he will develop into a player. We might see a few surprises, but overall we signed several below average basketball players. Just my opinion, but I’ve actually watched several of these guys play and I don’t see it happening!
As far as the current guys, KJ, Davis, and Jordan should be locked in a gym and forced to put up 2,000 shots a day, until they learn how to hit a jumper!
To add to my pleasure we signed exactly 0 local kids! I really struggle to understand why we can’t recruit locally. Technically Sano Gasana is a local kid from LCA, but not really local. Plus he is 6’3” and could be blown over if I were to breath deeply on him. I don’t understand the philosophy!
There were several people bagging on Harding because he was a one man show. Well he was the show! For a reason. We are going to find out what it’s like to lose a legit division 1 player and replace him with re-treads!

Maybe these senior transfers will bring some much needed hunger and sense of urgency to the team. I hope they don’t think they can show up and expect to take a lot of shots and put up low effort on defense.

Even if they are hungry and have a team concept, can the coaches develop them and game plan to their strengths accordingly?

Honestly, if Rahe was feeling pressure, he would have shown some assistant coaches the door by now. I think this is more like rearranging deck chairs on the Titanic. I hope I am wrong, but I don’t see the evidence of an improvement for next year.

I don't know where this originated, but it's something I heard a lot from McCarthy and Abeglin; It's less about the Xs and Os and more about the Jimmies and Joes.

Will see if these Jimmies and Joes have what it takes. The good news is that with the sharp decline in attendance, it won't be hard to socially distance next season if we have too.

Big T I have a question for you. Do you think Harding left the program better than he found it?

Excellent question!

Actually that’s a good question webergrad. As someone who invests time and money into the athletics programs and have followed Weber since I was young, graduated from Weber and attended all the games as a student. I have 10 seats on the 5th row, Harding is the main reason that my 10 seats are filled each game. Without Harding the games were atrocious! Ie..... Utah State!! We attended that game in Logan and I have never been embarrassed to be a Weber fan until then. We were only competitive when Harding was doing what he does! So the question is? How do we determine whether someone left something better than when they arrived?
I suppose someone could look at Harding and say; well he scored a lot of points, but the team was no good, so no he didn’t leave things better. So if we answer the question based on wins, No! Well at least this last year anyway.
But if I take who he played with, I do feel he did the most he could do with the circumstances he was put in. He shot 48% this year, he didn’t shoot well from 3 @ 32%, but he was injured a large amount. Shooting suffers when your legs aren’t right. He was double and tripled every time he touched the ball and still produced and is one of the most consistent college players I’ve ever seen. Every night he gave his best, and every night he figured out a way to compete. I could count at least 3 or 4 assists a night that don’t show on the stat sheet because his teammates couldn’t make an open jumper. All I can say is that if you play your hardest, take on 3 guys every game, make some of the most acrobatic shots of any player in the country, and never complain about the lack of help from other guys around you, then in my opinion he did leave it better than before he came.
Dame had a Scott Bamforth knocking down threes when he drove and kick! Eddie Gill had Harold Arceneau dropping jumpers and dunking off of passes from Gill, Stan Rose had Al Hamilton, Jermaine Boyette had Slobodan and Sparrow, Senglin had Kyndall Hill and Richardson. Ruben Nemhard had Jimmie Gegraffenried and Lewis Lofton! I think you get my point. I feel that Harding was incredibly good under his circumstances and if we had recruited players with some length and who could make open shots as well as developed some of the players that have left and continue to leave, then he would have won as much as all the other Weber State Greats. That’s my opinion anyway!

Good observations BigT. Harding gave everything he had, every game. We needed one or two more star quality guys around him to have been better as a team. Two high contributors like him and you have a good team. Three of them and you have a championship team. The role players are important too, but without more guys who give a little more, you can't win consistently. It doesn't always have to be in scoring either.

Hopefully, we are getting the guys who can put it all together and get us back to where we want to be. We will see. Hopefully we will have a season.

Thanks for the response. I have been wondering about that myself. I think that he was hopeful that Barnes would have been Robin to his Batman. Lack of player development has really plagued this program the last few years.

Webergrad- Totally with you on that! I was hoping Cody John could be that guy, as well, but he never developed. He was the same one dimensional player his senior year that he was when he was younger. When he got the ball his court vision was limited. I would have loved to have seen Harding with a couple knock down shooters. Man that would have been fun to watch!
Think if they had a legit big who could finish in the pick and roll. Who do you guard? Harding either gets all the way to the rim, hits a mid range jumper or the big gets dunks and layups and every other player finds the open spots and knock down threes. I personally feel that the whole motion, weave offense we are running isn’t a good offense, nor has it been working. We have no back cuts, our screens are weak and only serve as a little deterrent to the defense.
Either the coaching staff decides exactly what they are going to run and then recruits the right player for that system or we will continue to struggle. Defensively, we don’t get enough deflections, which in turns makes it difficult to get out and run the break. It really hurts us not having the length to get our hands in the passing lanes.

IMHO, what we saw out of Cody was everything he had. I believe he reached his full potential or very near it. What we needed was for at least one of our big men to become a dominant player. I feel like they improved during the year, but had too far to go, to be that guy. We were so close, in so many games, just a few more rebounds, a few more blocks, or a few more layups made, could have gone a long ways. I feel that this recruiting class is a move in the right direction. How well it all comes together remains to be seen.

I disagree in regards to John. Even in his freshmen season it was evident that there was ball movement issues when he was on the floor. IMO he was like an anchor keeping the team from progressing offensively. It never got better and last season when he was on the floor, an assist was rare sight. Last season we had Braxton and Chapman that were very capable and promising recruits that just never reached the full potential. It's funny that you are the one making this point. Whenever someone states that we do horrible job developing and coaching big men, you argue with them. Have you changed your tune Olds?

Harding is an awesome scorer! The issue isn’t the players...... it’s what you’re dreaming of in the offense isn’t the offense that Rahe currently has in place. Also let’s be honest, Harding wasn’t a proficient passer. He’s a shooter and as a PG you have to be able to pass. He looked like he was having a seizure when he needed to make a pass to the post. That’s what keeping him out of the NBA. LOL that you think his assist numbers were low because players were missing shots. He wasn’t making the pass! Rahe doesn’t want a dominant big. He wants combo guards that shoot 3’s. Braxton/Hill we’re huge in the pick and roll and were beast on dump offs, they both shot over 50% from the field, but I remember many nights when they would have 2-3 shots a game because they weren’t being utilized. The issue is that Rahe is recruiting talent that’s different than in the past. He wants bigs that can shoot the 3! That’s his right as head coach. So we will live and die by the three........ hopefully Rahe’s offensive scheme will get traction, but it was a hot mess last year. Even in all the mercenaries he’s bringing into the program now, there’s no dominant big. We go significant minutes in games without the post even touching the ball. That’s the new style of play at Weber........
