Defense limited Richmond to 5 completions in 20 attempts in the second half....IMO, that won the game for us....Whatever adjustments that were made at half time worked....Whew....Richmond is a good, well coached team....

100% Agree

100% Agree

Playing a QB in the rain that doesn’t use the laces to throw was a giant advantage.

I’ve got the hornets winning 41-31. If we can get that Round 2 monkey off our backs, anything is possible. Frankly UR scares me more than UIW or Furman.

Nearly nailed it.

I'll take it however we get it, Kadeezy. I'm still flabbergasted at how once again, we almost blew a game because we were throwing it too much with an interception machine at quarterback. SMH....

What game were you watching? We couldn't run the ball all game. 35 rushes for 72 yards and it was even lower than that before the last drive.

Their defensive line definitely took our running game out of it, I was hoping we would throw Skattebo some short screens to get him more involved.

OK. I found the link to ESPN 1320, and it works. I'll hit that up next week. And that should keep me going when the stat links die, too. There was one playoff game (not ours) where the stat link at NCAA.com cut off with about 5 min left. I guess FCS isn't a priority....

38-31 Hornet win. I knew this was going to be a close game given Richmond's stellar passing offense, but I didn't expect this to be a pass happy game in the rain. Wow. Richmond played a hell of a game on both sides of the ball, I didn't think they would have shut down the Hornet running attack like they did. Huge adjustments and recovery by the Hornet defense, Richmond was on the verge of boat racing us out of our own stadium like it was 2019. Huge spark provided by Tau-Tolliver on that opening 2nd half kick off and just down right grit by the Hornet passing game. Another O'Hara dime to put us ahead late.

Amazing. I'm still trying to grasp what happened tonight. More thoughts after a cigar and a few fingers.

12-0! Stingers Up!

Glad you found the link to the station we’ve been on for 15+ years. Maybe you’ll learn about the roster page on the website in the next five years, so that you’ll learn about our players.

Look all of the positive strides happening around here!

Solid presser, thanks for posting K. Also appreciate your game commentary even if I don’t read it until post game. Your neurotic postings mimic what goes through my head while watching live at the stadium. Never stop.

Final thoughts:

Better than expected turnout at the tailgate and in the stadium. 9136 in attendance puts us 3rd compared to the other playoff games. Rain wasn’t as hard compared to 2019, but it didn’t rain all game in 2019 like it did last night. It was both miserable and exhilarating at the same time. Glad I was there to enjoy our first ever D1 playoff win.

Offense opened up with a score but then Richmond put on the clamps. Something I didn’t realize until someone pointed out after the game that the offensive line was without Stiefel which no doubt had a significant impact. Skattebo (9 car, 21 yds) had a very limited impact. I was surprised Taylor was so quick to abandon the running game, while Richmond did an excellent job clogging up the interior, I thought we’d attack the edges more with the run. Fortunately the passing game was able to get it done and overcome some horrendous throws/decisions by Dunniway (19/39, 317 yds, 1 TD, 3 INT) that resulted in picks. Martin (10 rec, 148 yds, 2 TD) had some huge plays but the play of the game was the dime O’Hara (5/8, 83 yds, 2 TD) threw to Williams (4 rec, 107 yds, 1 TD) for the game winning score. There were a few dropped touchdown passes that the rain no doubt had an impact on.

Defensively, the Hornets came close to breaking but once again came through in the clutch. Richmond moved and scored at will in the first half. Fortunately the right adjustments were made and the Hornets limited Richmond to only 10 second half points, 0 4th quarter points, and most impressively held Udinski (21/39, 216 yds, 3 TD, 1 INT) to only 5 second half completions. The Spiders did break some big runs and made plays even when they appeared to be corralled by the Hornet defense. Broussard (9 tak, 1 INT) led the Hornets in tackles while linebackers Mather (8 tak) and Harris (7 tak, 2 TFL, 1 sac) had good games as well.

Special teams came through in big ways. The most notable was Tau-Tolliver opening up the 2nd half by taking the return to the house, as well as other solid returns on the game. Punter McGough flipped the field and had a huge punt that pinned Richmond inside their 20 on their final possession. Sentkowski (1/1 FG, 5/5 PAT) came through again, and should have had 2 field goals on the night if not for the horrid decision to pass up on a field goal in the redzone in a tied game.

Another gritty performance by this team that resulted in another win. 12-0! On to the quarter-finals...

Nice recap, SD.

Agreed with you on the decision to forgo the FG, especially considering that Richmond had already stopped the Hornets on downs earlier in the game and how they had controlled the LOS to that point. I’m sure the conditions played a part in the decision making, but Sentkowski has been solid all season and made PAT’s/kicks in the game already.

I see it as a common thing among most these offensive-minded guru head coaches to play very aggressively and believe they can get a yard or two. From HS up to the pro level the game has changed and it seems like these types of aggressive decisions are more the norm. It’s just hard for these coaches to punt or settle for FG’s.

But since seemingly the majority of coaches do the same things, it often evens out.

In Coach Taylor’s defense — the way Richmond’s offense played most the 1st half and how he might have anticipated the rest of the game going he must have felt that a FG wasn’t gonna cut it.

As for abandoning the run, I kinda get it especially since Richmond’s commitment to stopping the run seemed to open up the pass game and when Jake Dunniway wasn’t in panic mode he was largely making good decisions and throws.

I thought the shovel pass to Skat to setup a TD was a fantastic call and hoped we’d see more of those types of creative plays to get him and/or Fulcher the ball in space. IIRC they tried that shovel pass again later on, but not much else in terms of screens or anything else.

Hopefully they are able to get the run game back on point next weekend against UIW.

I agree with you both on this. (Big surprise coming from me, right?) On the 4th down play, I was thinking "I sure hope we don't end up leaving points on the field and this ends up biting us on the butt". Then when Richmond ended up scoring on the drive as a result of our turnover on downs, I might have said a few bad words. More than anything, it had to do with "leaving points on the field". I just know that points are at such a premium in the playoffs and to not get them when we can... I also knew that the weather wasn't going to faze #98, he's kicked in nasty weather many times over the years. Although from what I could tell from tv, THAT rain wasn't like what we usually get here in Washington. That was just AWFUL

Exactly. I don't recall how hard it was raining at the time as it fluctuated from light drizzle to downpour throughout the game and the kick was into the wind, which wasn't gusty. However the ball was on the UR 14 and a successful kick would have given us the lead 5 minutes into the 3rd quarter. Agreed that we should be able to convert on 4th and short but Richmond stuffed us on the down prior (and previously in the game) so it was no gimmie. Overall it's just a bad move to pass up on points in a playoff game and the UR touchdown on the following drive made it a 10 point swing. Fortunately we overcame.

Anyone know Stiefel’s status?

By the book. He’s out. He’s going to continue to try to play because he’s a tough SOB who is beloved by his teammates. If he can work through the pain. He can give it a shot.

Not sure if it was because he was out, but things didn’t click on the ground or in pass pro like normal - hard to expect it to when you lose your all American (imo) LT.

Dunniway tried to hit Skat and almost threw a lateral that Richmond recovered. Luckily replay show it a forward pass and overturned it.

I think I would have liked for there to have been some edge-type runs (power, toss sweep, triple option, etc.), but given our penchant for the Pistol those types of runs are likely out...particularly the triple, which sort of requires an interior FB dive threat. I love a conservative running game, but if it's just not going, you've got to do SOMETHING. Of course, after the passing game started clicking, a few draws might have been nice to keep them honest....

You don't need a FB to run triple option in this day and age, especially when you have a back built like Skatt. Pretty sure we ran a few triple option plays with the O'Hara-Skatt-Fulch look this season out of the gun with an QB-RB option to the edge off of a dive. Pretty sure we've gotten good chunk yards off of it as well. I was thinking Taylor would have dusted that one off when the interior runs were getting stuffed.
