The crazy thing here also, he already plays in a two quarterback system, I believe Bobby really wanted him as well.
I admit to not having followed or seen this kid before, as, while I still avidly follow HS football, I haven't followed as thoroughly or as widespread as I did pre-2020.
But I'm very familiar with Centennial-Corona's program and everything Matt Logan has accomplish there since taking over in 1997.
They are the Folsom HS of SoCal. But even more potent and dynamic than Folsom as they typically have a lot more athletes being located in the highly populated and talent rich Inland Empire. Like Folsom, they are a public school program that was built into a football power by an offensive-minded genius.
They run a sophisticated spread system with super wide offensive splits. I've seen no other HS team that runs offense like they do. And they are perennially among the top offenses in the country. They've produced some pretty good QB's over the years with Taylor Martinez being among the best they've graduated through their system.
Some might recall Nate Ketteringham, whom the Hornets signed back in the 2014 class.
Anyway, the system Centennial runs is similar in some respects to what Troy Taylor likes to do. Up-tempo, timing throws, QB read-option, etc.
I like that this kid is already in a 2-QB system. According to a recruiting article from back in March, he's described as:
https://247sports.com/college/california/Article/Carson-Conklin-visits-Cal-looks-ahead-to-Cincinnati-and-Liberty--184997055/
"a pure pocket guy with one of the quicker releases in the region. He has a live arm, can change speeds, throws with touch and accuracy and is a cerebral quarterback with a advanced feel for the position."
One thing to monitor is whether Cal-Berkeley eventually extends an offer. The article linked above indicated that Conklin really likes CAL but just hadn't received an offer.
Judging from the video posted, I agree that he does look pretty darn good. Hopefully his commitment lasts through signing day.
If Coach Taylor continues to employ a 2-QB system, Conklin could be the pocket passing compliment to Kaiden Bennett or Dorian Hale's rush threat.
Centennial played the #1 team in the country, Mater Dei, earlier in the season so it'll be interesting to review that game to see how he fared against all that D1 college talent.
