I miss the days when offering an already committed player was considered bush league garbage and highly frowned upon.

Doesn't surprise me in the least that UM would do it. But it's still garbage.

I’ve been following this kid for a while now, we are very lucky to get him. Carson Conklin plays for the powerhouse school Centennial in So Cal, was a ⭐⭐⭐️ star athlete and had offers from Arizona st, Cincinnati and Kansas to name a few.

The crazy thing here also, he already plays in a two quarterback system, I believe Bobby really wanted him as well.

I admit to not having followed or seen this kid before, as, while I still avidly follow HS football, I haven't followed as thoroughly or as widespread as I did pre-2020.

But I'm very familiar with Centennial-Corona's program and everything Matt Logan has accomplish there since taking over in 1997.

They are the Folsom HS of SoCal. But even more potent and dynamic than Folsom as they typically have a lot more athletes being located in the highly populated and talent rich Inland Empire. Like Folsom, they are a public school program that was built into a football power by an offensive-minded genius.

They run a sophisticated spread system with super wide offensive splits. I've seen no other HS team that runs offense like they do. And they are perennially among the top offenses in the country. They've produced some pretty good QB's over the years with Taylor Martinez being among the best they've graduated through their system.

Some might recall Nate Ketteringham, whom the Hornets signed back in the 2014 class.

Anyway, the system Centennial runs is similar in some respects to what Troy Taylor likes to do. Up-tempo, timing throws, QB read-option, etc.

I like that this kid is already in a 2-QB system. According to a recruiting article from back in March, he's described as:
https://247sports.com/college/california/Article/Carson-Conklin-visits-Cal-looks-ahead-to-Cincinnati-and-Liberty--184997055/

"a pure pocket guy with one of the quicker releases in the region. He has a live arm, can change speeds, throws with touch and accuracy and is a cerebral quarterback with a advanced feel for the position."

One thing to monitor is whether Cal-Berkeley eventually extends an offer. The article linked above indicated that Conklin really likes CAL but just hadn't received an offer.

Judging from the video posted, I agree that he does look pretty darn good. Hopefully his commitment lasts through signing day.

If Coach Taylor continues to employ a 2-QB system, Conklin could be the pocket passing compliment to Kaiden Bennett or Dorian Hale's rush threat.

Centennial played the #1 team in the country, Mater Dei, earlier in the season so it'll be interesting to review that game to see how he fared against all that D1 college talent.

I believe at the time he visited Cal, they were his number one choice, then things changed, he didn’t get offer. Conklin went to Sac State’s football camp, there the coaches got a chance to watch him and have some one on one talks with him, they convinced him that system was similar to what he was already playing in and showed him the culture and winning atmosphere here. After this, Conklin started following Bobby and team and I could tell his heart was already here. Yes, someone try to change his mind, but because he plays in that two quarterback system, the other qb there gets most of the attention.

One thing that I find so cool now, it seems much easier to recruit and get the players you want now, kids want to play for a winning team and be seen, even though we are FSC, they still can find their way to the NFL if they have real talent. Hopefully more people start showing up at games and then maybe, some day we will get a nice stadium, I know that last comment is just a big pipe dream, but who knows!

Even if he commits, signs, there is always the portal looming.
Not sure I like this portal as it swings both ways. Would be maddening to be a HC trying to build a consistent team year to year.

I remember Ketteringham, didnt he leave for UND?

Yeah, I’m not a fan of the portal. At all.

If they are going to have it, I prefer the old rules where the athlete has to sit out a season (unless moving down) which makes it so that less of these types of moves are on a whim.

Re: Ketteringham, I believe you’re right, he did transfer to UND.

I love the portal. Puts the onus on an admin to keep their coaching staff around (i.e. pay them). Also makes it easier to rebuild (at least in theory) following a coaching change. I have no problem with these players bouncing around to find the best fit.

K-Ham left after that abysmal season in which he had no OL and got sacked/hurried about 5 times a game. He led UND to a playoff berth his SR year.

It also promotes disloyalty, short cuts, and emphasizing individuality over team. More than that, it takes the student out of “student-athlete”. It makes it overwhelmingly about sports and not enough on academics.

These players are leaving Universities not due to “fit” but overwhelmingly due to reasons having to do solely with their sports team. They don’t start from day 1 or as an underclassman. Their coaches are too hard on them and expect too much. They aren’t getting the exposure or NIL opportunities they expected.

Basically a bunch of narcissistic BS.

College sports were infinitely better when these entitled little @$$es had to stick with their initial decisions and were developed over a period of a few years.

And if they were in a terrible situation with no other alternative, they still had an option to leave. But that option had consequences making anyone think twice as to whether they were really making the right decision.

Instead, now we have such carefree rules that some players are transferring 3-4 times, maybe even more, during a 3-6 year collegiate career.

It’s silly. And doesn’t at all teach accepting consequences for the decisions that are made. Instead everyone gets countless mulligans until they finally hit a perfect drive.

Preach it brother!

If we’re talking Transfers, I was always a proponent of one transfer opportunity per kid, without losing a year of eligibility. Thought that was a happy medium. It does seem like it’s the Wild West out there now, but I guess it’s okay as long as it keeps benefiting us lol…

Side note on the committs, there will be a ton of prospects at the next couple home games against UM (ESPN2) and Idaho (HC) - hopefully we come up big in those games!

The one transfer opportunity thing would certainly be better than what is going on now.

I'd argue that the portal and college athletics is just a reflection of what our society has become, for better or for worse.

The student-athlete argument went out the window years ago and was solidified by SCOTUS, hence why NIL will have its impact on college sports, again for better or for worse.

I do agree that there should be some rules on players leaving, but I don't agree with the way it used to be. Life is full of wrong decisions, many of which can be rectified with a change in venue/atmosphere. No reason college sports can't adapt with the times. :twocents:

This will be a great get in the TP to replace Pierre Williams. And, he could play his old team at our opener in ‘23.

The transfer portal is going wild today! Glad the coaches have an extra week before the Richmond game to make some contacts!

I was wondering when commitment announcements would heat back up. It’s been quiet for a while.

That Armstrong kid surely would be great get, but at that size and with those numbers my guess is he’s looking upward toward power 5 and I’d imagine will receive a ton of interest.

I like this kid too, but quitting on team right before the playoffs sucks! We could use a good cb
