#4 Weber State @ Idaho

Idaho should not be overlooked, but I expect Weber to be favored by double digits.

In the second year of FCS following the step down from FBS, the Vandals have yet to figure out the Big Sky.
Idaho has been on a roller coaster this season with a respectable loss against Wyoming and a win against EWU, though EWU is looking very vulnerable right now. They also did not look that dominant against D2 Central Washington. And most recently they gifted Northern Colorado their first win of the season.

Idaho is coached by Paul Petrino who has installed his son as QB1. This has not been well received in Moscow.

UI was a bottom performer in FBS and they have established themselves as a middle of the pack FCS performer. Their fans are not happy with their program right now, and deservedly so. However, they can be dangerous. I'm sure that we are not taking them lightly. We have been up and down offensively ourselves. We should be favored, but I expect a dog fight, unless we turn them over early and often.

It's an interesting situation in Moscow. They were the top dog in Idaho, both academically and athletically, for a long, long time. Then BSU, just recently moved up from a JC, began to make noise and UI's world changed. UI's market was shrinking and BSU's market was exploding. Academically, ISU's student body was growing while UI's was shrinking at the same time. Anyway, UI, in many ways, became the third dog in Idaho. They still have some outstanding forestry and agricultural programs, but their market is shrinking and they are more remote than USU in Logan. USU got a little lucky with their move to the MWC. UI had no such invitation. It won't be long until Dixie has a better market than UI. UI fans are butt hurt over the whole thing. :coffee:

Game Notes

2 Deep changes

QB Jenks is listed as the starter with Constantine as his backup. presumably that is injury related.

LT Downs is no longer listed on the depth chart. Atagi is starting with Cooledge as the backup.

LC Heckard is now the starter ahead of David Jones

Unless Jenks won the QB job with his performance Saturday..

QB situation is a bit fuzzy.

I did do a quick analysis on all the games played for Idaho and seems the teams they played had 150 plus rushing yards so the run game might be a plus for Weber this weekend. I also did a analysis of Northern Iowa and they did pretty good limiting the run on the teams they played. So hopefully we can get some ground game this weekend.

Before his injury, Jake was throwing a really well. If he is recovered enough, I would expect him to start. Besides, Jenks injured himself a bit in that last game and that may have accounted for some of what happened in the second half.

Over on UI's forum, most are predicting a WSU win, but they have UI scoring 20 to 28 points against our D. I just don't see that happening. I would really be surprised if they get 14 points on us. UNI got 17 and SDSU could only get 6 on us. If they can't stop our run game, we will just control the ball on them.

I expect a score something like 35 - 10 for our Cats. :twocents:

Been looking at their stats from their two FCS games. I heard that UI's defensive front 7 was really good and that their secondary has struggled. And the stats from these two games show that. They were good at stopping the run (allowed 128 yds/game) and putting pressure on the QB (6 sacks), but gave up some passing yards (307.5/gm). I hope Weber's game plan includes attacking that secondary a lot. On offense they ran the ball well (246.5/gm, 5.7/Att) but had some struggles passing (233.5/gm with 4 INT). Penalties and turnovers really hurt them, especially last week at UNC. In that game alone they had 13 penalties for 130 yards, and 3 turnovers.

I actually compared their rushing yards from their opponents vs the defense for the year ... Idaho 948 Weber 612

They gave up 331 to Penn St, 114 to C Wash, 237 to Wyo, 95 to E Wash, and 161 to UNC. I only looked at their two FCS games, looking at similar competition level. The Penn St game for sure is rather meaningless and skews the numbers.

I’m a little nervous about this one. Idaho was embarrassed last week and now they have a top ranked team coming into their house. I expect we will get their best. Constantine, Shaheed, and Rodriguez are banged up. Can’t afford a sloppy game like NAU last year.

Well we have seen coach Hill under pressure over the last few years but he some how always figures it out and gets it done.

My .02

Weber should win this game. No excuses. Idaho has some talent but they are horribly coached and are not mentally tough. Weber needs to be Weber. Stout defense and establish the run. Everything else should take care of itself.

Weber 27 - Idaho 16

Does the defense and special teams have to carry the load, and the offense is considered successful by not turning over the ball?

Hoping the Offense can pitch in with the few big plays they bank on with their scheme. I think Weber State wins 24-20. Winning in Moscow is never easy.

Go Wildcats! Get the first road win of the season.
