#6 EWU vs. Weber State Game Thread

Vitto now in at Qb. Where is Miller at Center? Butorac has been almost the entire game. Did Miller get hurt early in the game or something?

If we play well on this defensive series, I'd pull Adams and let Vitto play a series with the starters on O.

Nevermind, terrible series by the defense. We've now given up more points to Weber than their last 3 opponents COMBINED. We need to find a way to keep our intensity up.

I really wish we could get that Oregon-type of mentality when we play a lesser opponent; I want to see us just put the pedal down and euthanize the opponent early on. We tend to fuck around and let them make plays here and there and have to keep starters in to get banged up.

I agree. Why do we let up against these teams. We are clearly in a different league than Weber but we are letting them hang around and score points.

Honestly, I'm scared for North Dakota next week. They're not good, but they're better than Weber and I think we'll have another half-good, half-bad performance and playing on the road it might be a 50/50 game. With our talent level, that should be a definite win.. but you know we won't go out and hammer them for a full 60 minutes.

The defense has played just fine in my opinion. Most of their points have come off of penalties or turnovers by the O which gave them short fields to work with.

Well, it should have been a lot worse than the score. We gave them some cheap stuff and a couple of TO's that made it much closer than it should have been. Still, a win is a win. On to UND.

Glad to see Super Mario back in form, he looked great.
Receiving corps look good if we get the ball in their zip code
Vernon continues to look more average every game.
DB's kept things in check pretty well, and some of our young LB'er show lots of promise.
The real problem in on both sides of the line of scrimmage. When we allowed them to hang around you could see their confidence grow and they started pushing our line around. We should have been able to score every drive. NOT
As Dopa mentioned
If our defense is going to stop anybody it needs to start on the line of scrimmage. On running plays the Wildcats got a 2-3 yd push on the snap and their backs added 3-5 more. We have VERY talented individuals but NOT a good d-line as a whole.
My opinion of this team is at a new low. As you may recall I was thinking we could make an undefeated run but I don't think we can get through conference with less than 3 losses in fact I am not very confident we can beat North Dakota next week.

Last time I checked we won the game pretty handily. Yes, there are things to work on, namely our run defense. As far as North Dakota is concerned, a couple of questions: A)Are they a lot better than last season? B)Is our team a lot worse than last season? I think the answer to both of those questions is no. They barely got by a not very good Idaho State team today if that tells you anything. I think we will roll them.

WE WON!
OK, I think we need to step back and realize that we just beat a team 41 to 19. Yes, I think the EAGS coasted at times tonight. I agree that we seem to let up at times.

Calling VA average is just wrong. I think he is playing with a significant injury. I think VA’s leg injury is really hindering his mobility and throwing mechanics. However, he still threw for 4 touchdowns. He had one interception which was a bad decision throwing into coverage. We ran for 279 yards. When was the last time that happened?

Yes the defense does need to improve but they showed signs (albeit against a poor team) of improvement. The EAGS will have no problem beating UND next weekend.

I respect you 100% but I think you should wait til the next day to comment from now on....

41-19 people, calm the hell down!

Go Eags!

One thing I've noticed about Adams is that he doesn't seem to be as sharp when running the ball. Rather than looking for holes or sprinting to get around the edge, he seems like he just runs away from defenders even if it means not getting the maximum yardage.

I was happy to see the emergence of a running game tonight. I think it's time for Eastern to have a regular starting running back, instead of just rotating in guys. I'd rather see one pre-dominant running back get the most carries and see if e can get him into a groove. Based on tonight's game, I'd select Brown.

I think some of our problems are caused by intensity dropping in a game. We looked great on both sides of the ball early on, but became too relaxed by the end of the first quarter and let Weber hang around. I'd like to see us really play with fire for all 60 minutes.

Based on all the QB injuries across the nfl and college I WANT Vernon running away from defenders, don't be afraid to scramble but a few extra yards is never worth a big blood thirsty hit (unless we need that first down).

His pass yards were way down but our running game was unstoppable, which is a much bigger deal!

4 td passes and 1 on the ground, pretty damn productive.

Last but not least, A SELLOUT CROWD AGAINST SOMEONE THAT WASNT MONTANA!!

Go Eags!

I agree. Great to see Mario back in good form. He had a great game. Also agreed on the young LB's, especially Havili. That kid is only a true Freshman, but is going to be an absolute monster.

Emmm...I know maybe you're exaggerating a little here, but:

Through 5 games, he has 19 TD's versus 5 int's, 1584 yards, with a 65.1% completion rate. He also has 355 yards rushing and 3 TD's.

Yesterday he threw for 4 TD's and ran another in, despite playing with a lead the whole game and only playing 3 qtrs. I am guessing Weber State doesn't think he is very average.

Nice game, nice win
I would like to see more blitzing and pressure from the lbs.
Maybe that would help our secondary. They got burned twice for deep 3rd down cnversions.

After reading some of the bellyaching (said in the most respectful and loving manner), and given that it was a win etc. etc., I can only deduce that we have gotten spoiled!

This.

Our defense makes great plays, but no way should have given up so many points to Weber. UND barely beat ISU... we will not lose to them next week, and it won't be close, just like this game. Adams might not have been as sharp as he was against OSU, but he still put up video game numbers. At this pace he will shatter EWU regular season records and be the predominate favorite for the Payton. Settle down, folks. :ohno:

I think some people view the game from the fan perspective and say, "maybe not the best effort, but a win is a win." Others look from a coach or player perspective and can't help but look at all the silly mistakes and think the team is underperforming for their level of talent.

There is no doubt all of the Red Brigade is a little spoiled by how good the team has been lately, but it would be a shame to see us lose to a team that is well beneath us because we don't play a great game for 60 minutes (see Southern Utah last season as an example).

I don't think Eastern played horrible against Weber by any stretch. Unfortunately, the team didn't play great either. What concerns me is that Eastern really hasn't played "great" since Oregon State and all of these mediocre performances strung together is a little concerning. I brought up the Oregon comparison earlier--- when they play an opponent that is beneath them, they just come out gangbusters and don't let up until the game is completely out of hand. That's the way you ought to be doing it...

Cooper Kupp is as good as advertised. That first TD catch was a great ball from VA but an even better route and adjustment to the other shoulder for Kupp.

As mentioned easier, Albert Havili is gonna be a beast.

Weber is very young but not without the talent to hang 50 on an SFA team that beat the cats. Defense held Weber to 249 total and only 14 yards in the 3rd quarter. Teams are going to slow down compared with what we've been seeing.

I think we have way too much talent at the RB position to have just one or two guys playing the majority of the time. Heck, the back who may be the most talented out of all of them hasn't played since the second game. Even if Dj Martin plays next year it may be more of the same since we have everyone returning minus Bronson.

Just to chime in, I'd like to concur on the comments about Mario Brown. I've always thought he deserved more playing time and it was great to see him in there!

I hate to point out individuals, but I was a little concerned about the performance of our starting NG, Will Katoa. He seemed sluggish and out of shape on the line. He was slow off the snap of the ball and it resulted in him getting beat often. JMO.

Otherwise, I wasn't that concerned about the game. I thought the offense played as I expected them to and the defense was put in some sticky turnover situations. Only time will tell how we do through the rest of the season, but let's just take it one week at a time. I'm confident we will give UND another spanking this year.

- We won, and won big, that's all that matters, Weber was never in this game.

- We had a great crowd on Saturday, it was a lot of fun!

- Not sure how we can complain when we won our Big Sky opener by 22 points. Funny how we enjoy some success over the past few years and a 22 point win isn't good enough. Remember 5 years ago, we almost dropped our football program....

- Vernon Adams is the real deal. He has 22 td's in 5 games and is on record breaking pace, and he's only a sophomore....who cares how he looks at times, he is more than getting the job done...

- We should easily win our next 2 games, setting up a big time show down in Missoula in 3 weeks.

Enjoy the ride...
