Good questions that we should be asking... Here's my take:
1) No, I don't think so and here is why. JG and MD are known as 'experts' of those offensive and defensive sets. I think that comes from running those schemes wholly and soley where they have coached. Not the 4-3 with some short yardage 3-3-5 sets and not the R/S with shotgun formations. They put in place what they know and try to recruit the players for the system and not mold the system for the current players. I think what is going on was/is expected, but when faced with the likely situation, it doesn't equal the warm/fuzzy feeling that we had in the offseason.
2) No, no, and finally no. What happened to "You run the football for toughness. You run the ball to tell your opponent that you're as tough as they are. But you throw the ball to ring the bell." We're not ringing the bell, nor running for toughness. I can tell you what we would have seen last year. Stacked backfield, multiple fullbacks, and six points. Don't get me wrong, I'm on board with the run and shoot, but as JG and MD you must get that ball in the endzone if it takes the Statue of Liberty play or hiding the ball under the center's jersey. The game was over at that point from a mental mindset.
3) I think so. Not sure how long they plan on staying here, but my rule of thumb for college coaches is three years. Give them three years so that they can start playing with the kids that they've recruited. Ask me if we're 0-2 to start the 2009 season and you'll get a different answer...
