A Giant Disappoinment

Dissapointed.....Yes.....Given up.......no

The Vikes have broken my heart a few times in the past few years, but I dealt with it. I am sure that we aren't the only programs that has suffered setbacks, so I am willing to wait and see how the rest of the season shakes out, for good or bad.

I agree---Viking fans are renown for their great patience. I think we have to have faith that things still and will come around. But the O-Line issue is really bothersome. How can it be that we go from having a dominating O-Line to one that is now being dominated?

the key is how many on the O-line are returning starters, intially coached by Tim Walsh's system and how different is Mouse's system. These guys are now olaying a system they were noy initially recruited for, so there might be some initial confusion among the players.

I feel for ya'll. I remember the struggling days of the Hawaii Football team like they were yesterday. I believe in Jerry and Mouse and PSU's first two games haven't changed that for me. I still think PSU can turn it around and have a very good season. Ya'll just gotta get that first win and it'll be a snowball effect of success for the Viks after that.

It has only been two games. Jerry and Mouse will get this things going. It may not be this season but at what point did either one of them declare PSU would win the national title in 2007?

Give them some time. They are installing completely different schemes on offense and defense. It takes time and the right players.

Totally JGfan90,

The haters will poke fun at the Viks now, but I hope that we get the last laugh. Time will tell, but I was one of those that was not impressed with the play calling on the goaline stand.

Its easy to second guess though because had they scored I wouldn't be second guessing.

The luxury of being a fan

As a fan, I think it is fair to ask a few questions:
1) Did the coaches make a mistake by dropping Walsh's systems cold turkey as opposed to gradually transitioning systems over a season or two as different personnel were brought in? If part of the problem is clearly that we lack the guys to run the R&S and the 3-4, then why not delay full implementation until we could run them?
2) Is there ANY excuse for not scoring from the 1 yard line on 5 or 6 tries against Davis?
3) Will JG and Mouse stick around long enough to see this thing through? If not, then we have to ask if the losing is worth the off-field benefits of having them around. I've never expected JG and Mouse to stick around forever, but I never expected the transition to be this rough, either. At this point, they hvae to at least stay until we make the playoffs at least once. Otherwise, I'll feel like I was sold a bill of goods.

Good questions that we should be asking... Here's my take:

1) No, I don't think so and here is why. JG and MD are known as 'experts' of those offensive and defensive sets. I think that comes from running those schemes wholly and soley where they have coached. Not the 4-3 with some short yardage 3-3-5 sets and not the R/S with shotgun formations. They put in place what they know and try to recruit the players for the system and not mold the system for the current players. I think what is going on was/is expected, but when faced with the likely situation, it doesn't equal the warm/fuzzy feeling that we had in the offseason.

2) No, no, and finally no. What happened to "You run the football for toughness. You run the ball to tell your opponent that you're as tough as they are. But you throw the ball to ring the bell." We're not ringing the bell, nor running for toughness. I can tell you what we would have seen last year. Stacked backfield, multiple fullbacks, and six points. Don't get me wrong, I'm on board with the run and shoot, but as JG and MD you must get that ball in the endzone if it takes the Statue of Liberty play or hiding the ball under the center's jersey. The game was over at that point from a mental mindset.

3) I think so. Not sure how long they plan on staying here, but my rule of thumb for college coaches is three years. Give them three years so that they can start playing with the kids that they've recruited. Ask me if we're 0-2 to start the 2009 season and you'll get a different answer...

I'm on board with Marty. However, I think it is always going to be tough to score in the redzone without a goalline offense. One fullback and no other options will not cut it, especially with an immobile quarterback. Not an excuse, more a criticism of the coaches for not implementing this two games into the season.

As far as that goal lin estand by UCD, you would think with 5 or 6 shots at it they could throw 1yd TD pass for crying out loud. I have been a PSU fan since the days oflomax and the first Mouse Davis reign. I am trying to stick in there but it is tough. At least I dont have to read you-know-who over here.
