A win is a win but...

Man was this an ugly win!! We just kept letting them back in the game. Their mistakes in the first half spotted us a couple of scores but we didn't slam the door when we had the chance. I was thinking our D-line was going to be pretty dominant but not so in this game. We gave their QB way too much time and he made us pay.
And it is possibly an expensive win. A half Edwards went off very slow and with a bad limp. I think it was him in streets and on crutches during the second half. Johnson was down on the field in the first quarter and acting like he had cramps. Didn't see him play the rest of the game, speculation is that he injured a hamstring. Adams looked good in the first half.
Coming into the 3 toughest games of the season it appears we have plenty to work on this week.

Padron, a transfer from Southern Methodist, started EWU’s first two games of the season, but the continued improvement in practices by Adams earned him the starting nod versus the Wildcats. He led Eastern on a nine-play, 75-yard drive on his first possession, including a tackle-breaking, 14-yard scramble on third down for a first down.

“This has been more of a battle than people think,” said Baldwin. “I was proud of both quarterbacks tonight. Vernon was doing some great things in the first half and then he was fighting cramps in the second half. Kyle stepped in and made a lot of huge throws.”

It is nice to know that Adams can play but the qb situations is starting to make me very nervous. The strength of our O is our rediculously talented wide receivers. We need to have the guy on the field that can consistently get the ball to them on target. Padron has not been real consistent up to this point, but I have to think the he will only get better each week. Adams appears to be an awesome dual threat qb prospect, but I want a guy that is going to be able to get the ball downfield to the receivers.

I feel like Padron has to be the guy unless he shows that he is just not going to get it done. A qb controversy is not what this team needs right now.

The most telling stats to me were the TOP (35:08 to 24:52), rushing yards (206 to 140), and TO's (3 to 1). We also had better 3rd down efficiency. It really looked like we out-Weber'd Weber State in this one.

To me the most problematic issue was we seemed to play soft defensively in the second half and let them get back in the game. What happened to the intensity?

Not sure, but having two captains out in Zach Johnson and Paul Ena might have had something to do with it. :?

I disagree... I think Adams is the man. For whatever reason, our running game is non-existent with Padron. I don't know if he just doesn't develop the plays quick enough or what, but we become totally one-dimensional when he comes in. Weber went to a 3 man rush and just dropped 8 into coverage, and when they did bring someone, the pressure blew up the play.

I like that we can offer both a pocket guy and a running threat, but right now, I think our offense (and ability to control the game) are better with Adams.

The good news here is that you can easily bring in one guy situationally and change when needed.

And I agree on defensive intensity. It strangely just fell off badly in the second half. You just could watch and think "We aren't going to stop them anymore." That's the first time I've had that feeling all year after having it routinely last year.

Damn. Adams looked really good yesterday. He is fast and made good, quick decisions. Wtf is our game plan next week? I see arguments for both KP and VA. should be interesting.

I wouldn't change a thing for the Griz. Run the ball down their throat and control the game. If they're somehow able to stop the run, we can burn their secondary. Hoke is an experienced, tough, and talented QB who kept the Wildcats in the game. Montana, on the other hand, has an inexperienced rag doll who is no down field threat. We had 206 yards rushing and 241 yards passing yesterday, 4 made FG attempts, and only 1 turnover. That kind of execution will be more than enough to bury a Griz team on the ropes.

The Griz will stuff the run much better than Weber did today. Sears runs the 3-3-5 so they can be gashed with the run. And don't let what Bauman did against the Griz fool you, Bauman is simply a beast. The Griz will be much more formidable against the run, but also be more susceptible against the deep ball. The key will be doing what NAU did in the second half and bring the pressure. Get some pressure on McKinney, and he'll be giving the ball away like samples at Costco.

I agree however, I also noticed that with Adams in at QB the Eagles seemed much more effective and the run game was better. Quincy Forte & Talley make an excellent combination. I have been very unimpressed with Padron and I think you give the start to Adams vs the griz. 20-3 in the first half ON THE ROAD with Adams. Padron needs to step it up LIKE YESTERDAY.

question: do you guys think the "injuries" (forte, edwards, johnson, ena, adams) are for show, so the griz wont expect them to play saturday or what?

That's just ridiculous. Edwards on crutches wasn't for show, unfortunately. Same with Ena... not sure if he'll need surgery on his wrist or not, or if that would end his season. Don't know what happened to Johnson, I hope it's just a mild hamstring strain. Hope that Edwards doesn't have any major knee damage... heard his knee was bleeding. The crutches concern me more though. Adams will be fine, he was just cramping up.

Adams had a great first half. I was very impressed, but he missed a lot of easy passes which made me put my head in my hands. The first half we got VERY lucky. Going into the second half I didn't think the score reflected the way the game was actually going. Our offensive line collapsed on several occasions forcing Adams to scramble, which he did very well.

Also, in the second half I believe Weber State picked up their coverage VERY well. Padron simply didn't have as many options. As of right now, I would still put my money on Padron. He has the ability to get the ball downfield and Adams in no way can take credit for the run game. Weber State probably just had better adjustments in the second half to prevent the run game.

I am not ruling Adams out however. Once I see him complete some more passes, I will be more willing to give him credit.

Sorry Dopa, going to have to disagree with you here. I don't see how it can be said that the running game can be attributed to Adams. If anything, with Adams in the game, the running game will suffer until he shows that he can stretch the field with the long ball. Weber most likely made better adjustments in the second half to stop the running game a little better, I don't think this had anything to do with either Qb. Additionally, in one half Adams didn't show the arm strength or accuracy that Padron showed in the Idaho and WSU games, and this was against lesser competition. Both of the long shots that Adams took downfield were overthrown, and many of his short/intermediate passes were underthrown.

Now, with Adams in the game there is definitely a differenent dynamic than with Padron. But the same could be said about Padron. I mean, the two QB's are just completely different. I think at this point you gotta take it week by week and see who does the best in practice, and of course who you are going up against and your game plan plays in as well. But here's how I see the strenths and weaknesses of the two.

Kyle Padron
Pro's:
- Has much more in-game experience
- Has a much stronger arm
- Has better vision of the field because he is four inches taller (can see over the O-Line)
- Fits Eastern's traditional "pro" offense a little better than Adams, IMO, because of the above two points.

Con's:
-Minimal time in the system, which probably has a lot with some of the points below
-Takes too long to develop reads and check-down (some of this has to do with time in system, but not all)
-Tends to get fixated on Kaufman a lot...(dunno about this one, maybe it's because he is the most open)
-Accuracy hasn't been great in 2 1/2 games, although I do think this has something to do with the first point

Vernon Adams
Pro's:
- Much more mobile than Padron, can make a lot of plays with his feet
- Has a year plus in the system, since he ran the scout team last year
- The read-option - well, becomes an option

Con's:
- Hasn't shown the ability to stretch the field yet. This is my main concern, since our entire offense is predicated on it. This may change in the future, but right now it's an issue
- Only 6'0" and it seemed like he didn't have great field vision
- Decent accuracy, but not great. This will probably get better with time, but lots of underthrown balls to wide-open receivers and TE's. Hard to judge through only 1/2 of a game, though

Couple of observations.... Adams created a lot of plays out of thin air in the first half. He had a couple of Taiwan Jones now-you-see-me, now-you-don't moments. The kid is great at improvising. Clearly, he isn't the downfield threat Padron is, but that double threat is something we really need.

In the second half, with no running game to speak of, it made Weber picking up coverage pretty easy. Padron struggles whenever somebody bases him up weith cover 2 and finds a fourth man to rush. It's the same we've seen from every team this year when he plays. Again, he makes some great throws, and Kaufman bails him out sometimes, but I just worry that we go dry sometimes with that style and have no ability to control the clock.

SE174, ALL,
Spoke to Paul Ena, on Thursday at practice, he stated he will be ready for Montana Game next Saturday, and "NO", he stated he does not need surgery. Lets hope it remains at that. Haven''t heard much about Nick Edwards knee, hoping it isn't bad. We need those hands for next week.

These are times when I really enjoy the W/Receivers we have on this team. Don't forget we still have Cory Mitchell, Ashton Clark,Daniel Johnson, Shaq Hill, Nick Lenou, to go along with "Badass Kauf, and Heard"   :thumb: :thumb:

Cooper Kupp, and Keylin Huddleston should be RS. Got to go check out scoreboard. Vic Wallace

 samples at Costco   Good one SE
Anyone who thinks we are going to roll over the Grizzlies is wearing those rose colored glassed we see on other fan forums. You can bet the Grizzlies feel a need to win out if they want to be in the BSC conference race and wanting to prove something after the NAU game. Just because their QB got rattled and made some mistakes, you can bet Rosie will coach him up and he will learn from game film. They will see all of our weakness in our game film and attempt to capitalize on them.
We could see a perfect storm brewing in Msla and better have a great week of practice to be ready. For me the bottom line is our coaching staff will have the kids ready and in a position to win.
