Briefly: The Vikings kick off their season by taking on three 20-win teams in three days ... Belmont, which graduated their top four scorers from last year, had made the NCAA Tournament three consecutive years before falling short in 2009. ... Wright State was picked to finish second in the Horizon thanks to nine returners, including four starters, but will be without preseason All-Horizon guard Vaughn Duggins, who was suspended after being arrested for operating a vehicle under the influence in August ... Washington, which is ranked 14th in the Associated Press media ranking, beat the Vikings 84-83 last December in Seattle. PSU has never faced Belmont or Wright State.

GAME NOTES: The Belmont Bruins and Portland State Vikings get their campaigns underway tonight in the Athletes in Action Classic in Seattle. This a three- day, three-team tourney that also includes Wright State and the host Washington.

The Bruins are coming off another good campaign in 2008-09, as they won 20 games for the fifth time in six years and advanced to the postseason. Belmont did have its string of three straight NCAA Tournament appearances snapped, but still earned a spot in the CollegeInsider.com Tournament. Rick Byrd has built the Bruins into an Atlantic Sun power, but he has a lot of rebuilding to do with the loss of four starters.

As for the Vikings, they too have enjoyed success of late, having posted consecutive 23-win campaigns. Along with those wins came back-to-back NCAA Tournament appearances, as the program has become a force in the Sun Belt Conference. Head coach Ken Bone capitalized on the success with a move to Washington State, entering Tyler Geving as the new man in charge.

Tonight's contest marks the first-ever meeting between Belmont and PSU on the hardwood.

The Bruins must replace four starters, including A-Sun Player of the Alex Renfroe (16.2 ppg, 7.2 rpg), so don't expect this team be as successful as year's past. Jon House is the lone returning starter and the 6-6 forward brings versatility to the lineup, averaging 8.3 ppg and 4.1 rpg last season. Keaton Belcher, a 6-9 forward, will step into a starting role alongside House and he was productive off the bench last season with 7.1 ppg. At the perimeter, Jordan Campbell is back after suffering a season-ending injury in early December. The 6-5 junior is a solid all-around talent and should make a big impact in his return.

For PSU, two starters and one key reserve are back from last year in Phil Nelson, Jamie Jones and Dominic Waters, forming a solid nucleus for coach Geving. Waters, a 6-1 guard, provided a nice spark off the bench and ranked second in scoring with 11.4 ppg on the strength of 44.8 percent shooting from long range. The 6-7 Nelson started every game and produced 10.8 ppg, while the 6-7 Jones provided a nice complement with 9.1 ppg and 5.3 rpg. Freshman Chris Harriel has a great deal of potential and has excellent size (6-4) for the guard position and will start right away.

The Vikings are a bit more experienced and talented and that should help them get past the Bruins tonight.

A force in the Sun Belt Conference! Woo-hoo! Can't wait for that game against Florida Atlantic...

Dang. KPDQ has an AM and a FM feed. I've been rocking Faith and Family over on the FM stream for a half hour and missed pre-game. :-(

Classic Viking approach from the past few years though--fast-paced, lots of threes, bad rebounding. Nice to hear they're drawing fouls though.

Could only listen to the first half, then had other obligations. Too many turnovers, missed 3-pointers, poor rebounding and defense in the first half. Looks like the Viks played a better 2nd half, but not good enough to pull out a win.

GAME NOTES: The Portland State Vikings and Wright State Raiders will try rebound from season-opening losses, as they meet on the second night of the Athletes in Action Classic in Seattle. This tourney is a four-team, round- robin event that also includes Belmont and the host Washington.

Despite not having to travel a great distance for this tourney, the Vikings were unable to open their campaign with a win, dropping a 74-67 decision to Belmont last night. It was clearly not the start the team had hoped for, especially after participating in the NCAA Tournament in each of the past two seasons. A quick turnaround however, gives the team a chance to deliver new head coach Tyler Geving his first win at the helm of the program.

As for WSU, it had the unfortunate task of taking on the host last night, but it gave 14th-ranked Washington all it could handle in a 74-69 setback. The Raiders are a talented and experienced bunch and they certainly showed that last night despite the outcome.

Tonight's contest represents the first-ever meeting between WSU and PSU on the hardwood.

The Vikings were able to hang tough by knocking down 10 three-pointers last season, but their sub par 39.3 percent shooting effort from the floor set them back in the loss to Belmont. The team also had some issues hanging onto the ball, committing 19 turnovers. Dominic Waters, though, enjoyed a nice start, as he tallied 17 points and dished out seven assists. A key reserve last season, Waters is expected to be a go-to-guy this year after producing 11.4 ppg in 2008-09. Phil Nelson, who averaged 10.8 ppg last season, posted 16 points and seven boards in the team's opener, while Julius Thomas chipped in with 10 points off the bench.

The Raiders were outscored at the foul line 27-15 and they committed 19 turnovers that led to 17 points for Washington in last night's defeat. There were some positives for WSU though, as the team shot a solid 49.0 percent from the floor and matched Washington with 29 rebounds. Todd Brown paced the Raiders in defeat with 21 points and seven rebounds. It was a fast start for Brown, who averaged 11.7 ppg and 4.9 rpg a season ago. N'Gai Evans had 17 points last night, and Cooper Land came off the bench to pinch in with 12 points.

WSU did a good job against Washington last night and the confidence it gained from that performance should help in picking up a win over PSU this evening.

Well, the season has started as predicted, with a relatively new team and a relatively new coach. Against Belmont, disjointed, too many turnovers - it'll take a while to whip this team into shape. AIA's going to be good experinece, but hard on the record.

I wonder if the first game is a result of Waters being out for a bit with the shoulder injury, and missing on practice time due to the NCAA academic issues. We shall see.

I was only a witness by live stats for the Wright State game, but I came away fairly pleased. An opponent from a stronger conference takes a huge lead, yet the Vikings don't quit. Melvin Jones kept it close, and should play an important role throughout the season. I'd really like to see Julius Thomas, Jamie Jones, and Phil Nelson take a lot more shots though. If Dane Johnson is playing over Alonzo Brandon, why does Brandon have the scholarship? If Waters is out, Jones should theoretically be running the show with Harriel or Brandon at the 2.

They're probably looking at an 0-3 start, but that's not much worse than the 1-2 I expected out of this tourney. It'd be nice to see the rebounding and turnover numbers improve, but that doesn't seem likely given the current team makeup.

I don't think this coach can pull this team together you have to have some role playery looks like everyone wants to be a 3pt star there's no dribble penetration they don't play as a team they just turn-it-over and shoot 3's no blance here.

You can hardly gauge that after two games against fairly strong opponents. Right now, they are trying to stick to what they are good at and figure out the rest. They will be better, and they will learn to play as a team. Just remember how the Blazers started this season... ;)
