Any word on the new artificial surface

Sacramento State football coach Marshall Sperbeck said FieldTurf is still on schedule to be laid down on Hornet Field, meaning his stadium will be a magnet for championship high school events.

Just to be clear, the resolution in the above agenda doesn't specifically mention what brand of artificial turf will be replacing the sod. There are two major brands, FieldTurf, which is the #1 leader and SprintTurf, which is #2 in market share. Most, but not all NFL teams have FieldTurf. Montana has SprintTurf. I don't believe Sac State has awarded a bid to anyone at this point. Both companies are competing for the job.

And Sperbeck is no dummy, when championship games get played on this field, championship caliber players get a free visit and see what it is like to play in THIS college stadium, and thus helping his recruiting.

Your right HHD, I thought I saw where sombody said ST was the chosen vendor. They both seem to have a strong product.

It will definately be an improvement. Not only can athletics use it constantly so can people using the Well for organized events (proximity), HS sports, etc.

Sacto might get lucky and be awarded a pro soccer franchise, so we will need a new stadium like they are doing in Portland's PGE park. AAhhhhhh.

Must be SprintTurf as the Fieldturf site doesnt have us listed as an upcoming installation....

If I ever get the cache to get us a new field (highly unlikely), we're going back to grass. Too many injuries (both physical and heat-related) on phony turf. We're about to screw ourselves out of summer practice time and potential non-sports-related events because the place will be too hot. That's been proven at several local high schools already.
 
That's not true SH. This new generation turf (FT and ST) is soooo much better than the old turf...plus, with the lack of fields now on campus because of various construction projects, this will allow the team to practice at night early in the season when its really hot, allow the Marching Band to practice as they have two makeshift practice areas themselves. This will also allow us to host high school playoff championship games now. We are not going back to grass for a long time, if ever.

SH, I think you are thinking of the old artificial turfs. I believe the new ones are actually proving to be safer than grass depending on the type of injury we are talking about. I saw articles just last year that many area HS's with artificial turf were losing dates due to the threat of heat injuries. Perhaps the studies on physical injuries show that the old Astroturf style injuries may be a thing of the past. But I'm still worried about people falling out due to 100+ temps on the field (maybe 85 outside the stadium). That's probably more of an issue with track and renting the thing out during the summer for concerts and whatnot, but it's still a concern.
 
I played on one of the first (if not the first) artificial turf field installed in a San Diego county high school and I can tell you that these fields are amazing. Your feet can’t get “caught” in the turf while cutting or spinning so that risk of injury is minimized if not completely eliminated. My only complaint is those damn rubber pellets fly everywhere when you make a tackle.

The heat is a legitimate issue and definitely should be looked into, however this will encourage more night games. I would have to think there are ways to deal with the heat.

More than 60 top NCAA universities currently play their home games on FieldTurf including Nebraska, Ohio State, Michigan, Texas, West Virginia, Washington, Oregon, Wisconsin, Illinois, Iowa, Kansas State, Boston College, Indiana, Minnesota, Missouri, Texas Tech, Rutgers, Syracuse, Cincinnati and Louisville. Twenty-one of the NFL's 32 teams presently utilize FieldTurf in their stadiums and/or practice facilities. In addition, MLB's Tampa Bay Rays and Toronto Blue Jays have FieldTurf at their respective stadiums.

The NFL Players Association released their bi-annual ranking of NFL stadium fields during a January 2009 press conference in Tampa prior to the Super Bowl. Once again, the results tabbed FieldTurf as the runaway leader among all artificial turf brands. In data gathered from polling/voting of over 1500 NFL players, 40% of the league's Top Ten surfaces were FieldTurf fields. In addition, four of the top five and eight of the top ten artificial turf fields in the league are FieldTurf, according to that NFLPA data.

Would be uber cool to have a webcam filming the installation! Why the lack of press regarding this event?
What are they going to do with the grass they remove? It's ashame to try not to market it to interested parties, ie. boosters, parents, alumni, etc... At least give it a proper burial. :(

Yeah two contractors at the same job site is never a good thing. Let's hope they don't cross swords. Thanks for the update, any chance anyone can post some pics?

UM took pics of every blade of grass when their rug went in. Grumble.
