New Head Coach

If so, guess it was Lillard's influence determining at least partially. The HC at Troy just got a move to another college so thought that might be a chance for Canales to take his place, but post said Troy hired someone else.

Hope it turns out to be a good choice & a refreshing, successful era coming up for the Wildcats men BB!!

Welcome Coach Canales.

Alea Iacta Est, we've crossed the Rubicon. I get it, if I had millions and had promised around $10-15M of it to Weber, I'd want a say in who would be coming to coach at my alma mater. He has a lot of work to do. I thoroughly trust Dame to follow through with his commitments. To get resources flowing back into the program, build a practice facility, and get other deep pocketed alumni excited and donating. As for Canales; he:

1. Needs to get Weber back in the WIN column with conference championships, end the drought and get us dancing again.

2. Rebuild a broken relationship with the community. To me, that means getting Utah/regional kids back on the team. Out of the players who have announced intents to leave, Whitting has caused the most heartburn. He is a local guy that the community loved to cheer for.

3. Get butts back in the seats at the Dee and fire up the student body. That starts with seeing players on campus. As a student, you saw the team all over campus. Supaman went to school dances and was always getting students to come out to games. When he was at Weber, it was the thing to do. EVERYONE loved Boyette...Uh, we still do. He had help with Pat, Tal, Brad, Nick...etc etc etc.

4. Gotta build the fan base and get younger donors supporting the program. Too many former student officers get chubs for the Y, when they never went there. Not going to call out any names, but they know who they are.

100%. Need to get younger people juiced about the program. It should be in their face when they are on campus. They should constantly be reminded about their free tickets. Even if you can get them donating $10/year while they are fresh out of school, that can pay dividends in the long-term and in the aggregate.

And get them wearing purple!! Nobody is asking them to cast another school to the side or denigrate that program, but we need to build our program in the face of all challenges.

I liked what I saw from the press conference. Defensive effort left Weber State when Beckner left. If Canales really will demand effort on both ends, it will be refreshing.

It will be interesting to see the staff come together and what players come aboard. Welcome Coach Canales. Good luck and Go Wildcats!

What I noticed, and liked right off the bat, was his energy level. The guy can't sit still. If he approaches the job with that same level of energy, who knows where it might lead. Now he needs to get his team assembled and going.

it was no secret that I criticized Duft and company a lot and rightfully so I have witnessed and heard a lot of terrible things that Duft did as coach, a lot of things his “friends” would never think he was capable of and that made it hard to be a fan. Duft still being around is still weird but I believe his influence will be minimal. I am very excited for this era and look forward to being able to continue to root for these players and be able to cheer for this staff as well. Cheers to a bright future 🙌🏻
