Athletic Facilities

giphy.gif

Don't see how they do much with the site other than adding a field and maybe some temp bleachers in time for 2026 like Wood claims
Half assed just like the student voted for and approved 6,000 Event Center that was bait and switched. Actually, I am very happy the PAC/MWC told Wood/Orr to pound sand, we would have been the laughingstock FBS team with YMCA facilities and they saw through the BS screen.

Meh. Not a whole lot of detail other than some framework on an exclusive agreement to negotiate a potential deal to build something. I don't see anything getting done in time for the '26 season though. The grandstand is massive so there is potential to renovate it into something decent, however I'm struggling to see how the sight lines work out for football viewing. It's been quite a few years since I've been in the grandstand so maybe that's not an issue. The biggest hurdle, as with everything facilities related, is funding and I'm still struggling to see CSU green light bonding for this agreement/project.

Pros
  • Plenty of space in the grandstand to space out suites/VIP areas/lounges.
  • A nice venue at Cal Expo will appeal to the casual sports fans.
  • Better access off of Business 80 compared to campus off of Highway 50.
  • Plenty of space for expansion/other facilities.
  • Cal Expo/Sac State partnership should garner more opportunities for marketing/business engagement

Cons
  • Will the CSU approve bonds for an off campus venue?
  • Off campus will put a big damper on student attendance for games.
  • Tailgating likely gone
  • Athletic department will have to grow a pair and deal with off campus logistics
  • Seeing people foolishly claim students will walk along the American River Parkway to get to games

This is the type of swing where we could not have an athletic department in 10 years. This is going to be expensive, too far from campus, where we will have to work with cal expos vendors for concessions and not get a dime of it. I was excited to actually have some concessions that we could profit from.

Agreed. I don't think anyone should take the "FBS or Bust" moniker lightly.

Everything is negotiable, it's anyone's guess where the final percentages with CE lands for the various revenue streams associated with this possible agreement. We don't have serious concessions at HS now, so whatever percentage is negotiated with CE would be a gain. And with horseracing gone, current projected grandstand concessions monies for CE is $0. Seems like plenty of room to give by both entities.

I don't imagine that we are picking up that large a percentage from the food trucks at Hornet Stadium.

Dr. Wood on Sac town Sports with an update concerning the Cal Expo Stadium and on campus upgrades.

I’ve never been to Cal Expo Grand Stands so for those of you that have what kind of facility are we talking about at this very moment? Are we probably putting lipstick on a pig? Or is there a real chance here to truly make this feel like a real college football stadium?

Given Dr. Woods comments about conversations happening since January I’m surprised there has not been any leaks prior to this month, and I wonder if populous is now just completely off the table or if they will have any involvement in what is built at Cal Expo.

This whole year I feel like I have heard Dr. Wood use phrases like “cookin” and “big things ahead” which have led to I feel like what most might call letdowns, and he stated again that they’ve been cooking things up and there should be exciting news over the next 1 to 6 weeks. Oh boy…

I know Dr. Woods believes every timeline he gives, but there are so many things that are out of his control. I will be ignoring the timelines given in interviews and wait for official releases.

As far as the reported timeline of playing at CE in 2026, what's the rush? Cal Exp CEO said this timeline was feasible. So how far into this project are they really?

Be serious, ain't no student walking 2.5 miles even with free beer and food as an enticement. Everyone is driving or hopping on a shuttle to get to the game.
I lived on Carlson drive while as a student. Took 20 min to reach the park to see 4th July fireworks.
Have a pedestrian bridge very convenient. Not all students have cars. Yes shuttle busses big bonus.
Go to USC game park 1-2 miles away and walk. It’s normal No big deal SDH. It’s an option

Then there is the liability component. A drunk student falling into the river and drowning trying to stumble back to their dorm in darkness, bad weather or being mugged/raped.
Do they walking across Guy West Bridge now? What drama. Maybe they cross street without looking. Potential for anybody to do something wrong. They crash driving to cal expo blame school they had to drive instead of walk across campus to Hornet stadium. 😂🤷🏻‍♂️

Yes.., ticket sales, concessions, advertising. All terms and conditions we hope he has plans to lock into our contract.

I'd put more stock in students taking public transit to CE, which was free for students in my day, than walking down the American River Parkway. I've walked/biked and built various projects in this segment of the ARP many times in my life. No one that values their life is making that walk at night after a football game.
