Athletic Facilities

If this is going to be erectror-set Hornet stadium #2 and be all modular why not just build/replace on campus in the footprint existing? Replacement is only going to be 22,000 seats, not the 25,000 promised, which is the exact size of what exists today. I'd be ok to keep the track if it meant a new concrete/steel permanent structure.

Or, since the existing soccer stadium at Cal Expo is modular and temporary and soon to be without a tenant, why not add on to that facility?

Not sure of the rabid necessity of having Cal Expo involved at all. $171M for temporary modular construction just screams added pork to the project. Did the brain trust at Cal Expo find a gullible sucker to fund their continued existence?

Guess the whole Populous thing was just a farse? Another 'look at me moment' to falsely placate the PACx.

The ground up, permanent South Dakota State football stadium was $65M, albeit construction costs are lower in SD and this was less than 5 yrs ago at 18,000 seats, the $171M sounds absurd for a temporary scaffold stadium with double wide locker rooms.

Given the comments about this new path, I think it's clear that most folks are significantly overestimating how far the dollar goes on a construction project, especially here in CA as compared to other states. Yes a more permanent stadium would be preferred by everyone but the steel tariffs literally make that route 50% more expensive. So whatever estimates Dr. Wood had for price and capacity at the initial stadium announcement a year ago, add 50% to that cost to get the same scope or reduce the scope 50% to keep the same budget. Something was going to give. For those that struggle with math, that would be about a 12.5k capacity stadium at the same budget. Since FBS is the goal, a 12.5 capacity stadium is a total non-starter.

If the financing hurdles are cleared to move forward with the CE build, there's nothing that lends me to believe the CE stadium will be an equal or lesser experience/environment than current HS. The CE grandstand already has permanent shitters and concessions which qualifies it as a better atmosphere/environment as is. Pumping $171M into the grandstand and adjacent areas can only make it better.

Limit the amount of steel used. Prefer to have concrete anyway.
If they are only able to utilize 5,000 seats of the existing grandstand, that means the remaining seats in the grandstand are useless. How will this be anything other than a franken eyesore? Demo the seats beyond the endzones?

Why not expand the existing soccer stadium at CE? Already have 12,000 seats in place and shitters and concessions as u point out. $171M will buy alot of metal scaffolding.

Would something like precast concrete stands/seating be a cheaper alternative? That technically would be considered modular, depending on the setup. That makes the most sense at a $171,240,000 (oddly specific) price tag and a 50 year lease. Would also work for locker rooms.

I don't see the Northwestern temporary stadium model as viable.

Buckle up folks, this is what we are getting...

I haven’t posted here in quite a long time.. I can’t help but wonder why as Sac State Fans there is so much negativity about the Stadium plans. Considering no plans were ever even attempted in the past. We all know the current stadium is way past it usefulness. Even if the stadium at Cal Expo is modular and like the Chase Stadium in Miami it would be a definite upgrade and only 3 miles from campus. 171 Million is far better than trying to fund a 270-300 million stadium which they don’t have the funds for. I’m happy that at least Dr. Wood is attempting to get something that is suitable and expandable. As Sac State fans this is what we have and it’s this way in the Sacramento region and always has been. I think we should be more positive about it. Hopefully it helps get the Program to where they want to go FBS. We will see..

Thanks. Confirms that modular can mean prefabricated parts. Makes it more palatable, but still not convinced it's better than the current HS site.

Have to see how the Cal Expo grandstands are incorporated. The grandstands are about 60 feet longer than the HS stands, from my measurements. I don't know what issues that presents beyond the obvious esthetics.

Not better than current HS? Comically bad take. HS is awful, not really getting the "I'd rather have nothing if I can't get the gold plated option" narrative going around.

I would like to see the outer sections of the existing grandstand turned into VIP/Lounge type areas with a live game feed on large TVs since they won't have a good sight line to the field. But we'll see what concepts the architect comes up with.

The HS site. Not the stadium. I understand HS has reached its max life. It's too early in the Cal Expo process to forget about the Populous renderings we got last year and not think about what could have been.

Once the new renderings come in, it will provide the visuals I need to move on.

Why do you always dig on people who have an opinion? I don’t think having this exact model in the existing HS on campus location is ‘gold plated’. It is a valid point. We lose students, university associated location, Broad Fieldhouse, scoreboard, lighting and history. The only benefit is the how much are the shitters and concession booths and 5,000 seats worth at CE?

This will be the only football stadium built in our lifetimes at/for Sac State and we want it done right. In the right location.

After reading the Joe SacBee article, how can you possibly build a 40-50,000 seat stadium out of modular scaffolding? The weight bearing foundation won’t support upper decks. Plus, how do they expect to get 40-50,000 fans into the stadium when we avg 14,000 and lose to bottom dweller Poly?

Sounds grandiose, but unrealistic. Build a 20,000 seat horseshoe shaped permanent stadium on campus and build the visitor stands if/when economically feasible. Nobody sits in them today, so safety is not a concern.

Fair. I'd prefer remaining on-campus but that's something I think most everyone will get over in due time. The biggest hit will be to the student attendance as the student turnout has been pretty strong this past decade. But if there is a fleet of busses constantly shuttling students to and from campus then maybe that audience can remain engaged.

I think the CE location can appeal to the normie CFB fan more than on-campus given their familiarity of the CE grounds for other historical events. It would give more credence to the "Sac's Team" narrative.

I don't dig on people who have an opinion, I dig on people who have a bad opinion. Like saying HS is better than a new modular CE stadium.

Look, we all wanted that fancy concrete and steel stadium that was initially pitched by Dr. Wood. Unfortunately the money wasn't there for that to happen.
