Attendance, Heart of the problem?

After my last post I read an article in the Vanguard about this issue. The article mentioned that the athletic deparment had doubled the advertising budget from last year. I'm very happy to hear about the changes that they are making, and soon we should see a lot more viking advertising around the Portland area. The best suggestion was to get the student body more involved by having a tailgate party in the park blocks.
 
Just checking this morning, looks like Oregon State (Thursday, Sep. 6 @ Cincinnati) and Oregon (Saturday, Sep. 8 @ Michigan) should help with attendance for the Sep. 8 game against UC Davis.
 
I think with the first home game given the recent interest it may be close to a sell out. Whether that can be maintained throughout the year is another story.
 
I agree about the first game. If the Viks win, they will maintain the attendence. Simple as that, but a lot pressure on Glanville and company. I'll be there win, lose or tie because you can see we are heading the right way.
 
I thought about that myself. I don't know, but my guess is it wouldn't be significant. Of course, if we win the game there is no problem. It should be a good one to start off the season.
 
Most new coaches get a two or three YEAR honeynoon because they are going into programs with losing sesaons. I hope JG gets more than a PRESEASON honeymoon!
 
I think we'll get an above average crowd for the opener even with a loss at MSU in week 1, but I think the chances of a sellout or huge crowd really go down with a loss.
 
One of the Major issues for the football program in the past is the cost of Leasing PGE from the city. I was having a discussion with one of the coaches a few years back and learned that because attendence was so low, the Athletic Department was loosing money on the football program because ticket revenues were less than the cost of leasing the park.

I think the ultimate fix would be for the City to sell PGE to PSU and allow PSU to lease it out to concerts and random sporting venues that come to town. This is just a pipe dream and Im sure PSU does not have the money for this currently but 5 years or so of success and increased attendence could change that.

Even better would be if the public stadium drastically cut its lease rates to a public university, allow the Athletic Department to keep more of the game proffits to reinvest into athletics. Its 5 nights a year the stadium does not need to profit from the venue.

All true. I wonder what attendance number constitutes the break even point for PSU to profit after the lease of the stadium?
 
I have always wondered that myself Man of Vision, I believe this year we can reach that number and leave Glanville and the PSU AD a little more money for Marketing, an item whos budget has been a joke in the past few years.

I love the local TV advertising that PSU is doing right now, they need to expand, get back on I5 and 205 billboards, more on local talk radio. Lets get that stadium filled up and rockin.

A great point on the lease rate for PSU from the City.

Maybe this should be brought up on 'PSU Day' in the City of Portland.
 
The fact that PSU doesn't own PGE Park is a huge limitation on any thought of going to the WAC. You need to own your football facility to generate the revenues to compete in the FCS.

Not to play devils advocate, but what about The University of Miami?
 
The only way that leasing your stadium from someone else is a good idea is if you can fill up the stadium on a regular basis. The lease amount is the same if nobody shows up or everybody shows up. So if everybody shows up, that money is right in your pocket and you don't have to pay to manage, clean or operate the facility.

Miami does have good attendence so it is economically feasable for them. And if PSU fills up PGE im sure they will take in a profit as well, which would do wonders to move the program in the right direction. Thats why everyones individual commitment to be at games is so vital to the success of the viks.
