B-H Renovation/Addition

At halftime of yesterday's game Hinrichs mentioned the B-H renovation will begin at the end of the school year. He mentioned the addition of the new weight room amoungst other things. If I remember correctly this portion of the renovation was to be privatly funded so they must have dug up the money which is great.

I really hope the website posts something about this (hint hint), maybe some details and some plans like they did a couple years ago with all the facility improvements.

Apparently this will take about a year and the athletic department will have to move out of their offices and space (I'm guessing the arena will still be available) so no small project.

In lieu of any formal announcement, anyone know what's going on exactly?

From what I recall we will get:

Athletic Hall of Fame
New weight room
Revamped locker rooms
Air conditioning system modernized
Other work with modernizing the vents, heating, etc.

From the RFP last June:

Key objectives of proposed project:
- Develop two new, level one "smart classrooms".
- Develop Academic Success component on second level of addition.
- Develop new lobby on north side of building to include improved "front¨ door and display
components for UNC Athletic History.
- Remove portions of the existing CMU walls within the facility, in locations identified on
drawings. Install new CMU wall in existing portion of Butler Hancock to allow reconfiguration of
locker rooms and expansion of the current Athletic Training room.
- Install a second level in each of the two existing racquetball courts.
- On the ground floor of the north racquetball court, install two WC, four lavatories and four
showers.
- Resolve ADA accessibility issues.
- Reconfigure existing general locker rooms, renovate and upgrade newly assigned locker
rooms to reflect current standards: carpet, wood lockers with integral bench, full HVAC.
- Provide new, larger staff locker rooms on second level.
- Modify existing Swimming/Diving locker room to include 6 individual showers, wood lockers,
etc.
- Add storage and mechanical space on south side.
- A new electrical service and main distribution switchboard.
- New lighting in remodeled and new areas.
- To provide air conditioning for the proposed areas, a new chilled water system will need to be
installed.
The total project budget is approximately $14,500,000
In addition; the University is starting a fund raising campaign for the construction of a Strength
and Conditioning and Sports Medicine addition to Butler Hancock. Programming and eventual
design of this portion of the project is included in the scope of this RFQ. The budget for this
portion of the project is approximately $7,400,000.

I don't have full details, either, but I do know that along the north side of the arena will be the new strength training center. There will be extensive work done to set up a new sports medicine area & the HOF.

The arena will be available, but all offices will be unusable, sending everyone to Bishop-Lehr...
