We were lucky to have it close. Two special team TDs and a tipped pass to a receiver for a TD, that ran the wrong route. Bottom line is we will be 10th or 11th in the BIG Sky at the end of the season, and we will be stuck with Collins for another year.
Bear Fan,
I do not agree with you about being "lucky to have it close." Special teams is 1/3 of the game and our special teams outplayed the EWU special teams. Spectators need to understand that there are numerous small things that are happening all the time during the course of a season (meetings, practices and in games) that actually determine your so-called "lucky" plays. Even former players tend to forget about these "small things."
Speaking of Special teams, I think that the improvement of our special teams is an indicator of how Coach Collins is improving as a head coach. Though Collins was not ready to be a head coach at UNC when he was hired, I believe that he is getting better, as evidenced by his hires in Coach Kerr and Coach Cummings.
Unfortunately he has not done a good job in hiring a capable OC. If Collins is to be a winning coach at UNC, then he needs to find an experienced OC with experience and with a winning resume (e.g.like Kerr and Cummings). Boyer has had 7 straight losing seasons as an OC (3 at D-2 CMU and 4 at UNC), and it shows. At this point in his career, Boyer is not a winning OC! If he intends to stay in coaching, he needs to re-evaluate his abilities and realize that his employment as an OC at UNC has not been successful and he wants to get better, he needs to leave UNC. I believe that if Collins gets rid of Boyer, UNC will have a much better chance to be a winning program.
Speaking of Boyer, I believe that his lack of time management skills definitely put our kids in a disadvantage to win this past Saturday. His use of Tempo just before halftime allowed EWU to score just before half. We should have had a lead at halftime. And he still is responsible for getting the plays in late that result in delay of game penalties.
