Big Sky Attendance 2017

Yeah, I have seen enough Weber games on Pluto to know those attendance numbers are stretched a little. It seems odd to me that the conference doesn't have a standard for the released attendance figures: tickets sold or turnstile count.

But then, it is the bsc so....

I would estimate we are realistically in the 4,000 - 4,500 for an average on the year.

What is the point of keeping track of attendance numbers when we know that ours are way off? Are all of the schools keeping attendance off of ticket sales like we are? I would guess that some of the schools are keeping track of actual bodies, so it is like comparing apples to oranges.

Cause it's something I enjoy doing.

If the idea of keeping track of BSC attendance bothers you so much then stop coming on this topic to read about them. :tothehand:

I do this for fun and for the very few people on this board who are ACTUALLY interested.

Why do you like to treat people like crap on this board and then complain about the tone of the board? You call people names and get so bent out of shape when people don't agree with you. You would never act the way you do on this board in person at the games.

I have a valid point. Our numbers are off and I am not sure it is fair to compare our inflated numbers to other schools real numbers. You were vocal about the FCS playoff game numbers being off and Hein reporting it. Aren't you doing the same thing by continually re-reporting bad basketball numbers?

BEGIN RANT

You asked why I bother with attendance numbers and I answered your question. I didn't call anyone a name or treat anyone like crap. I actually don't really recall calling anyone any names, though I have been partial to calling one particular fan a troll since he/she only surfaces when things are going wrong so I guess there's that.

I complain about the tone of this board cause I believe that when this board is seeing it's most action is when something bad happens or is happening. When the team wins this board is actively quiet. And it never used to be like this. This board may not have many members but the few who were on here were active all the time, especially when the team won. Now it's only active when the team loses. Instead of celebrating wins we whine about super annoying time out guys. Granted this is a fan forum and it's a place where fans can voice their opinions and frustrations and that's fine. But when a fan comes on here (and you know who you are) and posts things like "Randy never beats instate foes" and then like last year after Weber beats both Utah Valley and Utah State back to back, that same "fan" disappears and doesn't post again until the next loss to complain. I am going to call them out for that. The new wave of thinking on this forum appears to be "it's ok to be angry when we lose but not ok to be happy when we win." If you don't think I'm telling the truth just go read the Sac and PSU game threads.

People are free to complain, but they are also free to be disagreed with when those same fans say things like "Going to the Dee has become a chore." Something I don't agree with and most likely never will. (For me the only thing that could make it a chore to go to a Weber game is if they start charging for parking.)

Do I wish Weber's schedules were better? Yes, Do I wish the crowds were better? Yes. Is there anything in the long run that I can do to help those two things? NO! So I don't really worry about that and I go to the games anyway and because of that I have been called a conformist and a supporter of mediocrity by a few members on this board. I've had fans claim that I must be a family member of Rahe, a member of the staff or administration or even Randy himself just for liking and supporting the guy and defending him when I feel he is being unfairly vilified.......hence why I get angry sometimes.

No, I don't agree with the numbers, never have. I am not creating articles in newspapers or topics on a fan board about Weber's attendance numbers and then demand that you believe them and then when you question them call you out for it. These are just stats that the BIG SKY CONFERENCE releases and I am just showing those who are interested, whether they are true or not. Do I believe that there was only 6,000 people at that Football game, Hell no, And I'll fight that everyday till the end of my days, but I still posted those numbers on the football attendance topic cause they were the only numbers Weber released.

Are we sure that Weber is the only school that inflates their numbers? Did anyone who watched the SUU / Weber game in Cedar City actually believe there was north of 3,000 people there? I asked my dad when we were watching how many he thought were there and he said around 1,500 to maybe 1,900. I am sure Weber isn't the only school who inflates their numbers so until we can get actual proof that NO ONE ELSE in the Big Sky skews their numbers I am going to continue to post these numbers, whether people here want to think they are pointless or not or true or not.

END RANT!

This rant was pathetic at best. Look dude, the reason people do not care this time of year, is because the regular season is all for not. It literally doesnt matte if youre 1st or last. And did you say that we beat UVU this year?? Haha we got curb stopped by them in Orem. We beat a crappy USU team, and a terrible SUU team. Rahe sucks when it comes to OOC games. His record is awful. He is 0-12 vs BYU. I think the biggest issue people are having, is that WSU basketball is not fun. I am convinced that you (WILDCAT) could be the only person at a game vs a Presentation College, and you would report 7k in attendance, and that you would have the time of your life. I just think people do not care anymore. We all knew come January we would be good. The issues are before January. Your rant is full of misleading comments. I too, will call out posters who make the program out to more than it is.

I was at both games, SUU and NAU. I would say that the numbers listed are accurate. I think it is really hard to estimate attendance based in a video scan of one side of an arena. At the Dee Center, if there are a lot of empty seats in the first 10 rows, with a lot of fans sitting above the portals, it is also hard to estimate that. There are more seats above the portals than below, and that screws up the perception. :coffee:

I disagree with this statement 100% this year's team has been very fun to watch, Jerrick Harding is worth the price of admission just to see him play.

This reply is pathetic at best, did you even read my rant?

It doesn't matter if your 1st or last

This is one of the most ludicrous statements I have ever heard but you are the one who said it so I shouldn't be surprised. So Weber should stop from ever trying to win the Big Sky year in and year out like everyone on this board thinks they should because it doesn't matter? So by that logic it doesn't matter if we go 18-0 or 0-18 in conference since in the end it doesn't matter? Then why does anyone on this board care at all whether we win or lose? Why does anyone care who we play during our OOC? Why do we even post at all if nothing Weber does matters? Why do you crawl from your troll cave every blue moon to spat your discontent and hatred to everything Weber basketball...if none of it matters?

And no I didn't say we beat UVU this year, I clearly said last year when we played UVU and USU back to back which we did and beat them both, but if you actually took the time to read before you react you may have actually gotten that yourself.......but maybe I'm giving you too much credit

Weber basketball is not fun

Never mind, this is the most ludicrous statement I have ever read.

I am convinced that you (WILDCAT) could be the only person at a game vs a Presentation College, and you would report 7k in attendance, and that you would have the time of your life.

Yes I would watch Weber play Presentation College, I'd rather see them play a similar level Division 1 foe but there is nothing I can do to change that. I could come one here and bitch and moan and hate like you do but in the end what (other than making myself look like a whiney child) would that accomplish? Plus I don't go to Weber games to watch our opponent, I go to watch the kids wearing purple and white, who put in countless and apparently thankless hours of their time playing basketball and working their asses off for Weber State and those who spend the money to come and watch. They deserve my support and they are going to get it. Would I report 7k in attendance? Yes, if those were the numbers that were reported. But like I told webergrad, just because I post the numbers doesn't mean I believe them. (Spoiler Alert......I don't.

HAVE THE TIME OF MY LIFE? I'd have fun for sure, considering sports is a form of entertainment but THE TIME OF MY LIFE??? Is there no end to the stupidity :wall: :dunce:

Oh wait, nope there's more.....

Your rant is full of misleading comments

Do you even know what misleading means? It means Deceptive and false. What was Deceptive or False about my rant?

I too, will call out posters who make the program out to more than it is

I'm pretty sure everyone on this board knows what level this program is at, it just comes down to who has more realistic views on what our mid major program is or who has more outlandish views on what they believe our mid major program should be. Whether it's financially feasible or not.

Well I've wasted enough time replying to that load of garbage.

They panned the crowd several times during the broadcast when they would show the students, it isn't like they only showed the one side. It looked over half empty to my eyes and not even close to the almost 4,000 they announced. The arena only holds 5,300 fans and it looked like there were more than 1,483 empty seats.

Wildcat, I don't mind reading these and I'm glad you take the time to report the information. Thank you! Also, I really appreciate all that is added to these threads by all the members. There shouldn't be consensus agreement on every topic. Just is cool that there are actual fans who care.

Okay, so, we all know that athletics really struggles with arithmetic and simple math. Maybe it's common core that is screwing with our administrators ability to accurately count? Regardless, any ticket sold before the season starts is always included in the overall attendance numbers if that seat is full or not. Also, any seat given to a company sponsoring a promotion is also counted as full regardless of whether or not someone is actually sitting in that seat. Next, any student with a friend (up to four free) are added on the original numbers (to inflate numbers it seems almost moronic not to have the band at every game, it is an automatic student section and an additional 25-50 more fans), and finally anyone who walks up and buys a game day ticket. Oh, and yes, every one who works in athletics is counted too. Olds is absolutely right as well. There are twice as many seats above the portals as below. If there is a decent number of fans sitting above the portals that is a good sign that numbers are going to be high for that game. I've emphasized this point over and over...the goal shouldn't be 6500 or 7000, but 10K or 11K per game. 7500 looks a hell of a lot better than 4K, but still makes the Dee seem empty. Then again, just enough is fine for some people leading the parade.

As for excitment?? Two things have hurt Weber Basketball: reNO and the game day atmosphere. reNO is fine for the UNCO's, Sac States and SUU's of the conference who aren't usually in the mix for the championship and don't really have fans, but for Weber, it should never be. Fighting for the right to host the post-season tournament along with the regular season conference crown is the entire point of the conference season. Each game means something and is important. Now, all that really matters is playing well for a week in March at some random arena in reNo and in the future boIse. Games aren't as important. Do I attend? Yes, I'm still at each game. Yet, the point is, the games aren't as important. In the past, fans would watch games of opposing teams hoping for a loss, now, I don't care, because playing well in reNo is all that matters.

Dee atmosphere...WE ARE NOT THE JAZZ!! If I wanted that experience, I would go to those games. I come to the Dee to have a college experience. I hate Jake, I'm pissed that it took the AD till the end of January to finally get the band out and yet, they never got to play. Instead we have to listen to music with terrible lyrics, and what can't really be considered music before the game and during every timeout. And don't get me started with Jake. He is a good guy, I'm just sick of him talking. Get students to do this, but yeah, it would take organization, effort and actual work to set something like that up. Things the Cup Cake man doesn't really excel at. I'm just shocked that there is an emphasis on a student group again...once again it took till January to really get going. Why does it take three months after something starts for athletics to figure it out? There will be no follow through during the off season and they will have to start all over again in October (football starts in August) for football, but won't keep it together for basketball and then we will see something happening again at the end of January for basketball. Ugh but, Jake will still be at every game shouting out "pippin hot pizza!"

Please don't include me in this mysterious group of "people" who are not having fun. The new offense is starting to click and we are seeing 4, 5 and even 6 players score in double-figures. Not only are the Weebs fun to watch, with Harding able to do things my eyes and brain can barely compute -- it's damn fun basketball.

I was thinking about what the fans in the rest of the state are thinking about their teams:

USU is a suffering middle of the pack team since they joined a better basketball conference.
The U is a middle to lower echelon team that can't win consistently playing in a conference that their fans pound the chests about -- but hardly holds up the bragged about standard -- with a coach that is insufferable. Their fans might brag, but they do not attend games as the team is boooooring!
The Y loses strange WCC games every year (1-9 LMU ). NIT here we come, again.
UVU has put an interesting collection of rejects together, but can't quite be consistent and New Mexico State has put the hammer down on that strange conference.
SUU, well ...

As a Weber fan, I think I'm having a lot more fun that other fans in the state -- in fact, my good ole Weebs may be playing the best basketball in the state right now. And watching this group grow together, I'm already being too anxious about next year's potential (and looking forward to how this year might end).

I continue to glance at this thread too even though I fully realize what's reported as "attendance" is wildly inaccurate. The list and inaccurate representation of those in attendance is worthless but who cares if Wildcat enjoys posting it? I find myself analyzing worthless data all the time because I enjoy looking at numbers and statistics. What is irritating to me is use of the wrong word to describe what's being reported.
at·tend·ance
əˈtendəns/
noun
-- the action or state of going regularly to or being present at a place or event.
"my attendance at WSU basketball games has become very irregular"
-- the number of people PRESENT at a particular event, function, or meeting.
"The reported attendance at the DEC was 6,000"

It's obvious that in most cases "attendance" in not being reported, rather tickets either purchase or made available is. Counting people coming through the gate and attending I see value in, as well as counting tickets purchased. Manufacturing a number of potential attendees makes no sense at all other than for someone wanting to manipulate a list, report, or graph to look a certain way. If an attempt was made to accurately report attendance, I would very much enjoy this thread comparing the BSC. It being what it is, I'll continue glancing at it but not giving it much thought or concern. Oh, and it's easy to look around the DEC-- both above and below the portals-- and know the difference between 6,500 in attendance and 3,000, but again, one figure is an estimate of those in attendance that could be counted and accurately used for business purposes, while the other is a manufactured number that must be useful to someone for making something look different than it really is.

:agree: 100% and is the number one reason in my decline in interest, followed by quality of opponent.

As for SATOG, I'd prefer better but am not bothered by him as much as others seem to be. My biggest knock on the DEC atmosphere is that it lacks a traditional college game feel. That very much includes having an energetic, engaged band; a loud, engaged student section; and students involved in every possible part of the production of the event. The Wildcats are the students first and foremost and they should be fully involved in showcasing their team with pride.

I was not questioning the effort that Wildcat puts into this report. I am certain that our average numbers are inflated by more than 30%. I am sure that there are other schools that are off as well. My original thought was, "It would be nice if we were looking at numbers that we could compare".

What I do question is why Wildcat continues to tell people to get off the thread and the board. We all have right to our opinions. By the way, you saying you don't remember calling people names is laughable. You don't have to go to far to find threads where you have called me and others names. Your go to names to call people are: crybaby, whiner and idiot.

I agree with Pirate! The team is starting to gel and we should get good crowds this weekend. How many will actually attend, we may never know. Harding will be the next NBA player from Weber and he is worth every penny to see.

Idiot is one of my go to names? What?

I rarely use that word to describe anyone

But your accusations made me interested, so I searched all 3,862 of my posts with the keywords idiot, whiner and crybaby.

Can you guess how many posts out of 3,862 the word idiot appears.........?

4 times.......And one out of those 4 was me calling myself an idiot.

The first time I used that word was in 2009 when a Montana fan came on the board and acted like a total moron.

https://bigskyfans.com/wildcats/viewtopic.php?f=3&t=952&p=8682&hilit=idiot#p8682

The 2nd time was in 2010 when I was responding to N.Ogdencat for calling GoBears and idiot, it wasn't even me.

https://bigskyfans.com/wildcats/viewtopic.php?f=2&t=1359&hilit=idiot&start=20

The third time was in 2011 when I called myself an idiot

https://bigskyfans.com/wildcats/viewtopic.php?f=2&t=2141&p=17434&hilit=idiot#p17434

And the 4th time was 6 years later in 2017 when I responded to Utah Pirate who called UNC's announcer and idiot. Again not me. But if it makes you feel better I did call the guy a tool.

https://bigskyfans.com/wildcats/viewtopic.php?f=2&t=5495&p=54349&hilit=idiot#p54349

Now for whiner, used by me a whopping two times.

The first time in 2012 for calling Larry K a whiner cause he didn't want to play Weber anymore.

https://bigskyfans.com/wildcats/viewtopic.php?f=2&t=3550&p=30344&hilit=whiner#p30344

And the 2nd time when I called UNC's radio guy a whiner. Man that's twice this guy showed up.

https://bigskyfans.com/wildcats/viewtopic.php?f=2&t=5752&p=58316&hilit=whiner#p58316

And last but not least CRYBABY.

Used by me a whopping...drumrole please.............................................ONCE.

And yes it was me calling you a crybaby for whining about me not being impressed with Big Sky teams beating crappy schools. Which you then responded with...

Come call me a cry baby to my face at the next home game.

https://bigskyfans.com/wildcats/viewtopic.php?f=2&t=5697&p=57215&hilit=crybaby#p57215

Who's the internet tough guy now?

So on my almost 10 years of being on this site...

I have called 2 people an idiot, one being myself the other an idiot Montana fan.

two people a whiner, Larry K and UNC's announcer.

and one person a crybaby.........for whining, guess I could have just called them a whiner instead.

And I didn't tell you to get off any forum, I merely said your free to not read them if you don't care about them.
