Montana State looked dominant, they are still probably a level up on everyone else. I still think they can be beaten on a given day with the right conditions but they do have a clear edge.
Other than the Montana State game every conference game was within one possession and came down to the final play.
I think that shows how close the competition is and how each week will be a prize fight.
Takeaways:
Portland State looks much improved. Big first half but couldn’t maintain it in second half.
EWU played tough at NAU. They are improved as well. NAU still made the plays needed to pull out the win.
SUU looks to have an impressive running game, and honestly given our showing on defense, I am probably moving that game from toss-up to edge SUU.
UTU: I can’t really given them a fair evaluation given they opened with the National Champions…but most likely will be a level down from the rest of the Big Sky like the Bobcats are a level up. Still need to see a different game and next week at BYU won’t be that game or at Montana. Most likely will be the NAU and Northern Colorado games.
Northern Colorado: Well-coached and play disciplined and sound football. Don’t know the talent level, but they have some concerns on special teams. They are able to play sound football the rest of the way, and they should be around 4-5 wins. I’m sure the game vs the Wildcats stings…that was a very good chance to boost the record. South Dakota at home will be a good measuring stick.
Idaho: I didn’t get a chance to see this game, but clearly Idaho is facing challenges since their coach left a few years ago.
Cal Poly: Improved. Stayed in the game and made the plays needed to get the win from looking at the highlights. They have Central Washington and San Diego before they get back into conference to get more confidence. Probably move the game to toss-up from edge Weber State.
UC Davis: Maybe they didn’t show up because they thought it would be easy? They played more like themselves in the second half…but I would move this game back into toss-up from edge UC Davis.
Montana: Still will be up around challenging the Bobcats, but can be beat.
Montana State: will most likely be conference champions and favorite to repeat. Still want to see more games for a better evaluation.
Idaho State: Expect them to try and be in a position to potentially make an at large playoff spot. It’s probably between them, SUU and NAU.
NAU: I think this kind of a mystery team like last year. They can shock some teams and then get shocked by other teams.
Weber State: ??? Next week will be a big indicator of where they could be. It’s a tall task to get a win given the defense and SUU’s rushing game. I think they can still be in the 5-7 win range. No way they would have won yesterday under Mental. So refreshing to see zero sacks, low penalties, good special teams, and red zone execution.
