Bovee on Talkin Sports tonight

WeberSki

Active member
Jerry Bovee sat down with David James of channel 2 for a pretty extensive intervieiw tonight. He was asked about Rahe being a pretty marketable coach right now. Bovee did respond saying that Rahe loves Weber St. and the atmosphere of Utah. He also said it was his job to keep Rahe here at Weber. (Let's get that extension finalized then already) David James asked him if he thought Rahe would (hang) with Weber until the USU or Utah jobs opened up, and Bovee responded those are not discussions I've has with Randy and he would obviously be keeping those close to his vest. He talked about BC and Texas Tech, and dodged a question about these being money games. When asked, in more or less words said that we are not looking to go FBS, and that Montana probably was, and would be a big loss from our conference if they did leave.

I happened to catch the interview as I was half asleep and forgot to rewind and record the DVR did anybody else catch it. I thought Bovee said something about Rahe and the next couple of months being interesting as far as other schools giving him plenty of attention and conversations he has had with Rahe??????? It really pisses me off when David James and other SLC media give us no respect at all. When David James had Rahe on Talkin Sports last year prior to the BSC Tourney most questions were about him leaving Weber and where he might go.

DAVID JAMES is an idiot. Who cares what he thinks.

However, i'm sure Rahe is waiting for the USU job, but not the Utah. As long as Stew is at USU, I think Weber is safe...No matter, I think Duft is getting closer to being ready to take over the program, but I'd really like him to have one or two more years under Rahe's wing. Also, if Rahe leaves this spring, then Weber might as well kiss their top 2011 recruits goodbye. Under his contract he has one more year, lets hope he honors it.

In my personal opinion, I really think Rahe is going to be a Wildcat for a couple more years.

we need to get an extension already. we dont need to wait for the season to end or to see if we gonna win the title. do it now.

I hope that rahe will stay for alot longer than 2 years. I hope that he stays well past the senior year of Lillard. If rahe leaves next year, you can beat thy Lillard also goes with him. Lillard still has that red-shirt and two years of eligability. Please sign with rahe for at least 6 more years! And somehow fund the money to do so. I know people are willing to donate money for a billboard on here, but heck I'm willing to pit money toward keeping rahe around! Not only are we talking about losing rage, we are talking about Lillard and best recuits in years. Find a way to keep RAHE!!

it would probably be cheaper to just move to wherever he goes than fork out your own money to keep him here.
last year at a coach's luncheon, he did say if he moved from Ogden his wife would kill him, so maybe he will stay as long as weber makes an honest effort to keep him

By all means keep Rahe. To keep him, the university must offer:

1. Money (which is hard to come by these days). Donors will have to step here.
2. Job security and stability (easier to do with a longer term contract).

When Stew Morrill was being courted by other schools (namely the U a few years ago), USU offered Stew just about anything he wanted in terms of autonomy in how he ran the program (scheduling, coaches luncheons, media interviews, etc.). You will notice that Stew NEVER does an interview in SLC and very rarely with the SLC media. If he does, the media comes to his house.
They also gave him a 10 year contract extension (which has been sweetened over the years). Stew stayed and has built a solid program that always competes for the conference championship, makes it to the post-season, and has a rabid fanbase. Stew turned down the big bucks for autonomy and stability. Now before Weberski starts to attack me for talking about anything USU, I only share this to illustrate that the same could be done here.
Rahe is the type of coach that will always have a competitive team. He can rule the Big Sky and be in the post-season every year. The fan base will come along as the team continues to be successful. Make this feel like this is his program to rule over for the next 20 years and he might forgo the bigger bucks and stay and enjoy being the defacto king of Ogden.
Long Live King Rahe!

A couple other factors:
1. Coaches are reluctant to up-root their families when they have younger kids, it is harder on the kids than the parents. Ogden is a good place to raise kids and families; other spots may not have the same positive qualities.
2. Yes it does come down to money, but most coaches also want the recognition that comes with building a repeatedly successful program. Not sure if Coach Rahe has enough years at Weber to say he's done all he can accomplish. The recognition is that he has done good things in the time he's been in charge.
3. Is the coach ready to go do a re-build? A big question....most coaching vacancies mean all recruiting stops, current good players find a way to leave, and you suffer for a couple years turning a program around. Yes it is a challenge that many coaches undertake, not sure if it is what Weber coaches want to do.

My suggestion is to get an extension in front of Coach Rahe NOW and let him know how serious Weber is in keeping him. It's nice to be wanted and appreciated, and lots of coaches don't hear that much.

I think Rahe really likes WSU and wants to say. He always says that anyway. He has really good teams guaranteed for 2 more seasons and with the new players coming in the program is just getting better. Hopefully something happens by the season's end as far as bonuses or extensions or something.

Heyoh22 GREAT Comments! Some of your points I didn't even think about, but they make perfect sense. I don't think Rahe wants to uproot his kids, and where he is at there isn't a better place to grow up or raise a family. Also, he is just getting into the swing of things. He is getting great recruits to come to Weber, which is ensuring that the program will be successful for years to come. Why would he want to leave Weber, especially right now? He has a player that is going to be in the NBA someday, and no he wouldn't transfer why would he want to stop playing for a year, that would hurt his development. He has assembled a great team that is academically solid and has excellent chemistry. Another great recruiting class is coming in and it looks like he is assembling another great class. I don't see him going anywhere. I believe he is a lot like Stew. Stew wanted to find a place where he could create a distinguished program and be able to live in an area that he loved. Why leave something that is so comfortable?

However, I especially like the suggestions of getting an extension to Rahe ASAP!! One that:
1. Gives him a raise and has incentives, such as, bonuses for winning.
2. Autonomy over his program
3. Media opportunities
4. That is long-term and gives him security. Weber gave an average coach like Cravens an 8 year contract why not give Rahe one to.

I'm pretty sure that Bovee and Tarbox are doing everything they can to ensure that Rahe will be staying here.

One thing that shows the quality of a program is attendance. If the folks in this area get their butts to the games it would go a long way. It would show Rahe that he is appreciated by the entire community, as well as the student body and campus community. Attendance figures is a sign of a successful program.

Just an observation but Rahe has lived in the state of Utah now for 12 years. I think he has been in coaching for 27-29 years so he's spent about equal time in Utah and Colorado.

Thanks, Tal, glad I made some sense.
I watched Syracuse/Georgetown last night and I know the schools are different in makeup than Weber, but there were so many students and adults in the Syracuse crowd, the noise was deafening, definitely an advantage. Weber can get there, but it will take marketing to a larger audience ( like in SLC, there are a lot of Weber grads that live there. Ogden is such a short drive, and a consistent winner will draw.

Face it, most casual fans are band-wagon jumpers; if the team is doing well, they are suddenly new found fans. (I think only the Cubs have the dyed in the wool love or not fans anymore.)

Bottom line, we need Coach Rahe to have a contract extension asap.

We don't need to market SLC WSU grads to fill the DEC. There is much, much, more than plenty of a population center to market too in Weber, Davis, Morgan Counties.
It was very interesting to me listening to an exhausted Rahe on the postgame after the EWU game he said he had to ask his assistants who they play next after the game, when Carl Arky brought up the Hornets up next, and then get this, he asked Arky "now that game is at home?" He was so focused on the weekend games he didn't know. A little later in the interview he knew what the attendance figures were though, for both games that weekend. He told Arky we were just under 6,ooo tonight. He is obviously paying attention to attendance numbers. A much larger crowd (7,000-8,000) dare I say a full DEC would make a huge statement on the state of WSU basketball. I was driving on Wall Avenue this morning and saw a SUU billboard. We need a "WE BACK RAHE" billboard somewhere in this damn town.

I agree with you weberski and disagree with you. I agree that Northern Utah should, and does, have plenty of folks to fill up our venues, but I don't think Weber should abandon marketing to Southern Davis and Salt lake Counties. Why not Summit too?

Anyway, that says something when the coach knows how many fans there are at the games. Its kinda ridiculous that there aren't more. Like I've said a million times, this program deserves more fans. In all honesty they've earned the right to have a full stadium watch them. This team is by far the most fun team to watch since Supaman and Co in 02 & 03. Also, a full stadium would be an indication to the Wizard that he is appreciated and his program is a success.

ALSO!! IF POOR LITTLE SUU CAN PAY FOR A BILLBOARD...SO CAN WEBER STATE, ESPECIALLY IN ITS HOME CITY! Absolute BULL poo-poo.

Come on Talhad4steals, why in the world would we market down south when we can't even afford to market in Greater Ogden. We don't need to be marketing in a city that can't pull a crowd at the Huntsman, and has the Jazz to compete with.

I absolutely hate the SUU billboard on Harrison by Subway. Who owns that billboard? It should be a WSU Athletics billboard. Where are the torches and pitchforks!!??
