Portland State on Monday got its ESPN BracketBuster assignment: The Vikings will play the Boise State Broncos on Feb. 21 at the Stott Center in a nationally televised game.
The Vikings are making their fourth appearance in the BracketBuster series, but this is the first time they've have been a host team and the first time they have played in a televised game.
Game times and network assignments for the match-ups will be announced next week.
"It's always great for our program to get the exposure on television," Vikings coach Ken Bone said. "And Boise State's a quality team, too, so this is a great opportunity for us to play against a good team - on our turf."
Bone had a hunch before the announcement was made that the Vikings would end up facing either Pacific of the Big West Conference or Boise State of the Western Athletic Conference.
"Either one would be sweet," Bone said. "Why? Because those teams aren't going to come here unless it's part of the BracketBuster. So, that's the exiting part to me is that we're getting an opponent who normally wouldn't come in here to play us.
The Vikings and Broncos have played 21 times in a series that dates back to 1968, although the teams have met only five times since PSU reinstated its basketball program before the 1996-97 season. The last time the Broncos played in Portland was Nov. 30, 2000, when they defeated the Vikings 81-66 at the Stott Center.
Bone said the next task is to start collecting some video on the Broncos (15-6, 5-3 WAC).
"I'll deal with that game after we play Northern Colorado on that Thursday night (Feb. 19)," Bone said. "Other than that, it's not a real big deal to me. The big deal right now is getting our guys to come out and get the job done this weekend."
The BracketBuster series is a two-day event that started in 2002 that is designed to match potential NCAA Tournament hopefuls from mid-major conferences in games that can not only help improve each team's ratings percentage index (RPI), but also get then some exposure that they might not otherwise get.
As a series participant, the Vikings will play a return game at Boise State next season.
