BREAKING NEWS (for real): SMU QB Kyle Padron...
I'm almost certain he two years of playing eligibility left, because of the injury last year.
Right that is what is in question. Was sitting on the bench last year due to an injury or he just got benched due to performance, and that is what we are waiting for a clarification from the BS on.

It was injury... even after he was pulled from the opening game, he played in the following two games as a goalline/backup, and then injured himself lifting.

A 6'4" Eagle QB who has good arm strength, is accurate, mobile, and experienced is almost too good to be true for me. Our defense will be much better this season. We have the best WRs in the conference. Our O line should be much more consistent, and we have experience at running back. How could we NOT win the chipper again! Just kidding. But, Padron is exactly what WE needed. Welcome aboard!

Good Post 93, I agree.

I think we have taken care of the offensive side of the ball for next year, now if the defense can come together we will be just fine. We should put up some huge offensive numbers. One of our biggest weaknesses last year was the D, especially stopping the run in the 2nd half of the season. Our defense, not our offense hurt us last year. In our losses we gave up 30, 30, 17, 36, and 43. We also won 4 of our games giving up 51, 35, 28 and 27.

Look at the last couple years in the national championship games...defense won those games...if we can shore up the D, we have a shot at making a run at the Big sky championship and a deep playoff run.

Another article on Padron from the Sports Network.

QB Padron hopes to be perfect fit at EWU
Cheney, WA (Sports Network) - It was such a perfect fit before that Eastern Washington football is seeking yet another storybook finish.

Former SMU junior quarterback Kyle Padron is transferring to the Eagles program with the hope that he can follow the success of Bo Levi Mitchell.

Great point Marc, I agree our D needs to get back to the 2010 level and intensity. We kind of started off that way last yea and even held the Griz to less than 20.
What I can not believe is that it's almost 6 mos to the first game!! argh!!!

Well, good news on Padron! I have been "trolling" our own site for this information everyday since his visit. I do think spring ball is important, but hopefully summer is enough and the girlfriend in TX doesn't distract too much. It raises the excitement quite a bit for the arrival of fall.

There is just one lingering problem - we certainly have the talent to steal the BSC Championship (not enough to be favored though), we have arguably the best coaching staff -hands down, BUT - that damn schedule looms like last year's to me. I remember my own cursed words last season by stating we could go 0-4 late in the 2011 summer before we win . . . . I will not speak those words again, but on paper it just as tough or not tougher than last year. Idaho is not a strong FBS, but they are FBS and at home, and do NOT want to lose their "gimme" game. WSU is just plain scary, traveling to UTAH will be tough to play Weber, and then league favored Montana at home, Sheesh. Realistically, we need to beat Weber. Plain and simple, we come home at least 1-2 with momentum. We need to have a good showing from the FBS match-ups - if we think we can beat Idaho, we better have played them close. I am scared to death of Leech at WSU, the score could be close or we might just get ramshackled. I'm hoping that "the first game of the year kinks" are there for his new offense or we might be in trouble. We will know about our db's by then.
Bo Levi had moxie, but more importantly - he had developed a closeness with "his" team and became a true leader - he liked being at EWU - and it was more evident as he grew with the program. KP (assuming he is the QB) understandably has a long way to go before he develops this and won't have it Game 1 or Game 2, losing makes it harder to develop, winning expedites the motivation and is contagious.

Wouldn't be nice if we had something new to unveil at the Inferno next year like the "Red Turf" in 2010? A new visitor grandstand, screen, etc. We all know the "oomph" it puts into the crowd and players. :D

Found this article from the Easterner....this probably doesn't count as an "official" announcement from the University, since it's the student newspaper, but a good read nonetheless.

http://sites.ewu.edu/easterneronline/2012/04/12/17257/" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

The NCAA has a strict policy regarding student athletes transferring from a school in the Football Bowl Subdivision to a school in the Football Championship Subdivision. SMU is an FBS school and Eastern is a FCS school. NCAA rules state that a player transferring from the FBS to the FCS must have two years of eligibility.

Padron, a junior, currently has only one year of eligibility. The Highland, Texas native, however, is in the process of being granted a medical redshirt due to a back injury sustained in 2011. This would count as his second year of eligibility, which would allow him to make the transition from SMU to Eastern. Padron is confident he will be granted his medical redshirt.

While Padron prides himself on his accuracy, he is excited to work with an established receiving corps that allows him to get away with making a few mistakes. He praised the skills of Eastern wide receivers Greg Herd, Brandon Kaufman and Nicholas Edwards.

“Seeing what they’ve done on film, it’s pretty spectacular,” Padron said. “You don’t have to put the ball on them every time. You can kind of throw it in the general area and they’ll go make a play on it.”

Leach doesn't scare me. We kept it respectable and put up some pretty good numbers against Leach's TTU team with Crabtree. And that was after Leach had been well established in Lubbock. Not saying we will win or that Leach won't be successful, and WSU has some talent coming back. But I wouldn't place them as any better than the OSU team that lost to a mediocre SAC last year.

when does Spring ball start? one would think the coaches would want to bring whoever it is in prior to then.

End of March. We'll hear an announcement one way or another before then, guarantee it.
When might we hear the decision of the conference?

Read something on twitter which said he should know within the next couple of weeks.

I would imagine that the conference can't make an announcement until EWU officially announces that Padron is transferring here, which they can't do until he's officially enrolled, which he can't do until he finishes this quarter/semester at SMU. So whenever that is. ;)

Padron just tweeted that the Big Sky granted him a medical redshirt and he'll have two years left. He says he's "pumped to be an Eagle"

I am as glad as anyone that we are gaining more talent. That only leads to more competition and a better team. I just hope he is not coming like the second coming of ... and is not expected to EARN the job. The QB's we have on campus that have been working their ass' off and deserve a shot at the job and the respect earned for all of the hard work they have put in.
All in all we will be much better than last year and the QB position is the biggest question mark. Whoever ends up being the starter, this will make us a better team, as Big Sky contender and possibly another trip to Frisco.
The Vandals and Cougars should be nervous.

If they're nervous, they know how good we are. I hope they think they have the W in the bag... 8-)
