Rumor I heard out of Boulder today is this: Eric Bienemy will be the new coach at CU, with Jon Embree as OC and Ken Norton, Jr. as DC/LB coach? What does this mean for UNC? Brian Cabral would looking for a job! Thoughts on him possibly taking over the bears?

Here's a small corroborating thread I found from 29Nov2010:
http://www.allbuffs.com/showthread.php/55304-News-on-Bieniemy-Interview

Having met the man last year, he is an awesome human being! He'd be great for these boys.
Sure has the connections within Colorado.

We could only be so lucky.....

I would love to have Cabral but it would be too good to be true. He would be a great fit for this program. He has also mentioned no school has contacted him, other then CU. Is he even on the radar?

I think he would be a steal. Do the powers that be have the money?? According to CU fans he is definetly on UNC's radar!!!

In case you hadn't seen it yet, CU offers HC postion to Embree; Bienemy is then lead candidate for OC postion.

CU/AD Bohn are looking pretty bush-league with all these announcements/not_not_really_an_announcement ...

..and finally, Embree apparently accepted the job after all...as verified by an interview with Mike Shanahan

Man, CU really biffed the release of all this news....

CU tried to be all secretive about it and got what they deserved... we're dealing with the same situation here except nobody cares enough to leak the news.

Embree is a very safe pick, he gets the "keep it in the family" crowd off their soap box but has this guy done much? Heck, even CSU got an NFL coordinator and all CU can do is a position coach? The guy's been coaching 20+ years and hasn't advanced much at all. He seems like a yes man to me... Bienemy was the big risk big reward pick and bringing him to CU as a coordinator I can see him jumping ship in a year or two.

Overall not that impressed with CU's choice.

We just can't afford good coaches. So far according to the Tribune there have been three people publicly interested in the job - Peterson, The Kentucky guy and Denver Johnson.

As far as the CU job, you never know. Hawkins was a good up and coming coach with head coaching experience (like so many of you want) and it didn't work out. He was a hot commodity coming from BSU.

Has been contacted by UNC.

Asked if he would be interested in applying for the UNC job, Cabral said "I'm not sure yet," adding that he wants to wait and find out if he will have an opportunity to remain at Colorado.

Cool, I guess. It would be great to get a guy that REALLY wants this job. Hire Peterson or Deti. They REALLY want this job.

He will bring fire and he has recruited Colorado for the last 21 years, I'd take that over promoting a coordinator from a staff that won 9 games in 5 years... if that's all you're going to do, promote a coordinator from a terrible staff then why fire Downer?

UNC would only be trading up to get Brian Cabral. He's not only considered one of the top linebacker coaches in the country, he was an assistant coach for CU's only National Championship team AFTER he was special teams captain and played on the 1986 Chicago Bears -- the Superbowl-winning Bears.

I think wearing a superbowl ring and having NFL experience would impress more than a few recruits.
He's been in Colorado since college - with the exception of his NFL stints - and has connections. He also is great with Polynesian connections and recruiting California. He is involved in running one of the "all poly" camps each year.

This would be a huge coup, made only possible if Colorado overlooks him in the excitement of sweeping out the old Hawkins staff. Cabral has been kept on staff through 4 HC changes ... he must be doing something right.

Why hasn't he been promoted? Apparently he's a quiet and humble person who doesn't throw a lot of glitz into interviews. But he knows how to bring it on the field.

He wants to be a head coach though so you can't discount that factor and from what I know about him it won't strictly be a financial decision.

I'm not sure what a LB coach at CU makes, I'm sure it's more than 100K but it can't be too much more, I'm sure we can stretch with the person who is the right fit and get them up to 110K to 115K, what was Boyle making and now Hill? That's freed up some cash right there. When they decided to cut Downing loose I'm sure they knew they'd have to pay more to the replacement anyway so that should be accounted for already.

I'm starting to warm to this idea though.

State employee salaries are out there if you dig deep. This is from 2008 about, so could have changed, but not THAT much.

Mark Helfrich, offensive coordinator, $208,000 (left CU for Oregon)
Jeff Grimes, asst head coach/offensive line, $190,000 (left CU for Auburn)
Eric Kiesau, wide receivers/passing game, $186,160 (only coach with multi year contract)
(he's not wide receivers coach anymore, but I don't know his title.)
Greg Brown, secondary, $137,500 (left CU for Arizona)
Brian Cabral, asst head coach/linebackers, $130,000

If they promote him to DC I can see him staying. But, if they want him to stay as LB coach I can see him coming to UNC.

Yep, i think he would be a steal. With all due respect to Scott Downing we probably should of taken Cabral 5 years ago when he was up for the job. Things have a way of workng out. I really like Cabral's demeanor. Go Bears!!!

Ok I've changed my mind, forget this guy he's nothing but a errand boy and doesn't have the onions to be the man.
