Yes, Joe still has a job, but the cries for his ouster from Laramie are growing. It's a pretty harsh comedown for a Sporting News magazine cover boy from not too long ago...
Not sure coming back would be a good option for Joe. Anything less than conference championships and going deep in the 1AA playoffs would be sub par because of what he accomplished at this level and this school before. I do think he could be successful quickly with the foundation that Scott has built.
Joe is still a popular figure in Wyoming - just not as the head football coach anymore. I don't think there is any chance he holds on to that job. I wouldn't be surprised to see him get "reassigned" to the fund raising area at Wyoming.

I'm going to go ahead and hold off saying that Downing has done a good job of recruiting (foundation building) until I actually see someone do something with them.BearCub said:

Just look at the players Scott has brought in. The 1st time we lined up against a Big Sky team in Greeley, it looked like a high school team against a college team. Idaho State's QB was bigger than our D-Line and their linemen were more athletic than our linebackers. It has taken a while but that's not the case anymore.
No one would have competed in the Big Sky with the players we had then, not Dalton and not Joe either. I think, if we win 4 of the next 7, Downing stays and it's definitely possible.

As ridiculous as this idea sounds, what about Gary Barnett? His reputation might be tarnished even though he was not found at fault in the CU recruiting mess, but he has a history of success with less talent than his competition (Northwestern), and he still spends a fair amount of time in Colorado. In addition to that, he still has a fire to coach, and he has not gotten another shot in FBS/1A. He also received a massive buyout from CU, so money may not be a huge factor to him. He'd be at least worth a phone call.

I've seen 3 of the 4 games this year and there is no comparison to the last two years as far as talent goes. We are leaps and bounds ahead of where we were. I thought we were more athletic than Texas State but they dominated the line of scrimmage. I thought the same with NAU at the line of scrimmage but their QB and #20 were super athletic and we couldn't quite match up there. However, on offense we gashed them both for big plays all day in the passing game.
We are small on the offensive line and our running game has proved that out. We've yet to run the ball with authority and need to get bigger and stronger there.
But, we now somehow have playmakers that can do something with the ball in their hands at the WR spot that we haven't had since Vincent and on special teams we've blocked punts, and returned a KO for a TD which we hadn't done at all the last few years (with the exception of the Texas St game in 2006 blocking a punt).
So talent wise we are getting close, I didn't at any point in the Texas State or NAU game think they were ahead of us talent wise, at certain positions yes, but overall no.
I would have never said that the last two years, I thought we were not even close with the acception of Sac State last year.

Here I go with my old school thinking, but I wouldn't bring Joe back ever. He was only looking out for his own advancement when he left and took our good assistant coaches with him as he moved on. When a coach wants to leave us for greener pastures the gate should be closed for good. Only Dalton was a true Bear and wanted to stay with the program to keep it on its winning ways. He made a mistake in that he should have retired his last year with a positive memory instead of being shown the door when it was time for him to step down. I think Downing is doing what he can with what he has to work with and we will be on the winning track soon. I like the fact that the team is behind him as we the fans should be too. If we start hearing that the players have give up on him then we need to reevalute the sistuation. They are the ones that really know what is going on with the team. Those of us on the sidelines only see the final score. The games we lost were heart breakers, and we were so close to being 3 and 1 this season. I am still excited about the program and I am confident we will be on the winning track soon.

I'm not sure on the talent level yet - I think we have a QB that is making quite a few players around him better than they might be. Defensively we have not shown a whole lot in any of these games and are in the bottom of third or so of most stats in the conference and last in a very key one that I think shows a lot about talent - turnovers. We're better than we were, but I'm not sure we are demonstrably better and can proclaim anyone a recruiting king when he has a full complement of scholarships to work with and the prior coaches were well short - and no I am not claiming Dalton was a great recruiter.
BudBear I like what you said about Dalton - except I'm not sure he needed to be shown the door. JoePa, Bobby Bowden and Howard Schnellenberger are still doing it. Lets face it, UNC will always be a stepping stone in any good coaches career (its that way at every FCS school) so when you have a great coach that is not only willing but has turned down other jobs to stay here I say lets give him some loyalty and let him stay. Maybe encourage him to make some staff changes and get some recruiters in, but keep doing what you're a genius at and that is putting a kick ass offense on the field regardless of the talent. Anyway I digress.
I also don't begrudge Joe Glenn for furthering his career - we all would do it at the drop of a hat. I doubt Joe wants to come back and deal with our issues though. If he would take it we would be nuts to not let him back.
