BSC recruiting update

Joey Frenchwood has been on the radar for sometime now. I don't know if he is a serious candidate or not though. As for transfers, I have no idea where to even start. I'm sure the coaching staff has an idea of who they are looking for, but as for the fans, we are kinda looking from the outside in. That is how it should be most of the time. So it doesn't matter. Just fun knowing who the Cats are looking at.

Welcome Mycats...I understand your concerns. I'm sure there are plenty of fans on the board who share your worries. I think the 5 position is going to be played by committee. This situation really reminds me of when Tresnak first came to Weber. However, Morris was far better prepared to play starter mins than Hajek is now. However, I feel Braxton is far better prepared to play significant mins immediately. More so than what Tres was able to contribute when he was a freshman. I could be completely wrong though. Tresnak is surely going to be missed. Who knows what the Cats are going to get from Van Pelt. He really developed and made some serious progress his red-shirt year before his mission, but that was two years ago. We will see, but we need to be patient with him. He could really turn into something special or, well, not. I think he will be a solid addition for the Cats.

Weber is going to be pretty solid at the 1, 2, 3, and 4. That Cats still have another scholarship to award and could get another, like Olds has said, big type player. A guy who can play the 4/5...yet there is a great chance that that guy won't be available to play for a season. Yes, the Cats are young, but our youth got a lot of experience and the addition of two Jr JUCO's will really help the Cats out.

5 by committee should be the key to success next year. Does anyone know if Tres will be around for summer rat ball? That could help if the new bigs have that level of competition to bang with. Braxton should be able to pick things up reasonably fast, and I wouldn't worry about Van Pelt. Didn't Oldrunner say he is home (or very soon)?

Other in-state programs have plenty of examples of players getting back into the full swing of things with less time than 4 months. From reading some old posts it seems like his progress as a redshirt freshman was quite extraordinary? Didn't the coaches consider taking him off red shirt half way through the season? He must have done something right ...

One step at a time. First, the summer should tell us a lot about the new guys ... how hard they will work and develop. Next, the preseason should be interesting and indicate how the BSC will go. Bringing the youth and entire team together ... will they gel, leadership, etc.? Lot's can change between now and next January :thumb:

A lot has been said about how versatile this team could be. I would love to hear a summary of which positions each player could play from some of you that know everyone reasonably well. For example, could Joel play the 3 or is he strictly a 4? It sounds like most people don't see him as a viable 5. Who are the best shooters, rebounders, playmakers, etc. at their positions? In order to be successful an entire season we will pretty much need contributions from 10-12 players, especially if there are any injuries.

Hunter - point guard - the most pure 1 guard we have had for a while
Senglin - combo guard - 41% on 3s - will move to point as primary position
Golden - combo guard - 35% on 3s, great scorer, 87% on FT
Jefferson - combo guard - great scorer any way you want it
Gittens - combo 2/3 - gets to the rim often - can shoot the 3
Richardson - combo 2/3 - great shooter and athlete
Hill - 3/4 - primarily a 4 but can play 3 on defense
Johnson-Coston - 3/4 primarily a 4 but can play 3
Bolomboy - 4/5 can play both equally well
Braxton - 4/5 - primarily a 5 but can play 4
Hajek - 5 he is a center all the way
Van Pelt - 5 he is a center all the way

In Rahe's offense, transitioning from 4 to 5 is relatively easy. Likewise, from 2 to 3. It is quite difficult to swing between 3 and 4. Their roles in the offensive sets is so different. Also, whom ever you pick to be your primary 1 guard will play almost exclusively there. One or two of the combo guards will get some time at the point. Swinging from 2 to 1 is often hard for an incoming freshman to do. Although I wouldn't rule it out. :coffee:

The transfer list has become huge and will only get bigger. I'm sure that the coaches are following it closely.

So I went back and added each player's class and height based on what I could find from posts on this site and newspaper articles. Does this look about right? Pretty good size at each position.

There has been a lot of talk about red-shirts. Seems like we have that option given the depth at the 2-4 positions. Seems like Johnson-Coston might be a little short to be primarily a 4? Perhaps that will work in the BSC?

Given Hayek's history with injuries and any other injuries that may happen, we appear to be right around 9-10 players, especially if anyone redshirts. Seems to be lots of possibilities with this roster, especially if all the bigs can stay healthy. As has been pointed out we will be very young but could perhaps develop into a pretty dangerous team by conference play.

Looks very promising on paper and what we already know about some of them. I hope Rahe can figure out who works the best together and quickly, it would be fun to have them ready to compete in the Paradise Jam.

Anyone who follows the Jazz closely and/or has opinions about what they should be doing this draft/FA season go express your thoughts on the tread I put in Other Topics.

Joey Frenchwood commits to Montana St. As mentioned before, Weber showed some interest in the Oakland Rebels PG.

Also, Ian Fox commits to Idaho St. Looks like a solid recruit who had interest from some pretty big name schools.

The interesting dynamic, going on now, is that many HS kids are being hit with reality. They have been holding out for what they thought were bigger programs recruiting them and all of those options have dried up. Bigger programs keep them tied up, telling them to hold until late in the process, while they recruit higher level players. Then, when they get the higher level player, their backup plan player is left in the lurch. That is why there are often some really good players hanging around late into the spring signing period. That is why I would tell any HS player to sign in November and if a school is telling you to hold for a while, sign with someone who really wants you and isn't thinking of you as a backup plan. :coffee:

Montana has offered Jarriesse Blackmon from Layton High. First I've heard of this local kid and it looks like this is his first offer. Any interest from Weber?

Not 100% sure of this, but I think that he entered UNC under a program that allows him to be eligible in the 2015-2016 season. Again , not 100% sure but I think that's the arrangement. He'll benefit from the year of physical growth and ability to adjust to college life.

He's a winner and this is a great situation for him to develop.

One scholarship available next year, unless someone leaves the program. We are strong at the 1,2 and three slots. I really think we'll need a 4 or 5. Looks like a quality local player, but unless there's a transfer it would be a tough spot to fill.

Hajek is our only Senior.

The exception to bringing in a big wing player would be if we got onto a 4 star type guy at 3. Right now, we are going after some high quality combo bigs. Obviously, we wouldn't turn down a Michael Jordan if he were to come our way. I think that we will stay the course and continue our search for a 4/5 combo. We are in on some good ones so far. :coffee:

Jarriesse Blackmon is a solid basketball player, and fortunately, in our backyard. Regrettably though, Weber doesn't have a lot of options this fall, and are looking for someone special. Right now the Cats are in the position to get a stellar basketball player, and Blackmon might not be at the level or position the Cats are looking for or need.

With Cannon finishing his mission, the Cat already have a solid PG coming, and the team is stacked at the 1, 2, 3...I agree, the most pressing need for the Cats is a 4/5. The Cats are shopping around for a high quality 4/5 type player with the available scholarship. This Fall, yes, I do think Rahe will sign more than 1 player, but if he does the players will have to be something special. The Cats are looking for higher quality recruits 3 and 4 star guys. As for the guys who are on our list...YIKES, there are some really good Bigs the Cats are courting.

It will be the class of 2016 when we will, once again, have the openings to bring in 3 or 4 guys. That class will have to include a couple of bigs and a wing player. I would venture to say that as much as 50% of the recruiting time this summer will be spent on evaluating and targeting players for that signing class. Our sights are already set on players to bring in for visits in the fall and that may change very little over this summer. The lists for 2016 will start growing and there will be a few on the 2017 list. That is the nature of the current recruiting game. :twocents:

I would almost expect a transfer or two every year. Just seems to be the norm anymore with any program. But without any transfers you're correct that only one scholarship will be available, if the staff decides to even use it. The trend the past few seasons seems to be to not use all 13. This is how the 2015-16 roster would look without any transfers and before adding another player. This could be a very good team.

1. Bolomboy, Sr
2. Golden, Jr or Sr
3. Johnson-Coston, Jr or Sr
4. Hill, Jr
5. Senglin, Jr
6. Gittens, Jr
7. Van Pelt, So
8. Braxton, RFr or So
9. Hunter, RFr or So
10. Jefferson, RFr or So
11. Richardson, RFr or So
12. Cannon, Fr
13.

Keep in mind that 2 or 3 of our freshmen could red shirt this year and there would be a likelihood that Cannon would red shirt the first year off his mission. :coffee:

We all know the guys the Cats have committing to the program Riley Court, Juwan Williams, and Emmanuel Nzekwesi (personally I feel this is a diamond recruiting class for the Cats, fits our programs needs and gives us more bench strength), but the rest of the Sky has been getting commits as well. NAU has secured the commitment of 3 Star Michael Green a 5-11 PG from Florida. Murphy and his contacts. It seems that Murphy offers everyone he comes in contact with. Also, the Jacks have Combo Guard Majestic Tejada and PF Corey Brown (loooool bengalhater, that is really his name). Judging from what the Jacks are losing (Quinton Upshur, Aaseem Dixon, Gaellan Bewernick, Len Springs, and Zach Reynolds) 5 Seniors, and currently have 14 on scholarship/financial assistance on the team, that means they will probably sign at least 1 more. No matter, getting Michael Green is a big time get for Murphy.

The University of Montana have received a commitment from Michael Oguine. He is a 2.5 PG from Reseda Calf. He had a handful of scholarship offers from a number of other mid-majors like Portland and Santa Clara. He is a strong pickup for the new Montana coach. He will need a great recruiting class to keep Montana at the level it has been. Along with Oguine, the Griz have received a commitment from 6-7 SF Jared Samuelson. With the exception of Oguine, the Griz's class has been a bit sub-par from what Montana fans have become acquainted with.

On the other hand, Montana State has had a great fall. In his first year at the helm Fisk has picked up commitments from a couple of fairly talented and touted combo guards. 2.3 Tyler Hall and Mandrell Worthy both should be able to make an immediate impact in Bozeman. Also, 6-6 swingman Sam Neumann really is a solid foundation to build the rising Montana State program on. Montana State is a curious program. There is talent and if it is molded right, could become a dangerous team this season.

Down South in Cedar Nick Robinson has received a commitment from 6-8 PF Nick Pete from Hemet Calf. His AAU team was the Compton Magic. Not a bad AAU program to come from. Habitually one of the best.

Finally, BJ (the UND rendition) has received three commitments: 6-4 PG Cortez Seales, 6-4 Swing Adam McDermott, and 6-5 SF Josh Collins. Both McDermott and Seales were fairly highly touted mid-major recruits. Seales was receiving some high mid-major attention from Western Kentucky, Drake, LaSalle and always good Northern Iowa. But decided to take his talents to Grand Forks. Got to admit it, he might not be the best X's and O's coach, but BJ can sure recruit. After Weber, UND has perhaps the best recruiting class coming in.

Nobody else has signed anyone, but the recruiting season is just heating up.

From what I have seen Emmanuel is the recruit, who has committed, who had the most programs after him. Emmanuel had 16 scholarship offers and was receiving interest from 10 more programs. He has High-Major potential and could end up becoming something extraordinarily special for the Cats.

I forgot one at Sac...Katz has received a commitment from 6-7 Joshua Patton. Reminds me a lot of recently graduated Jordan Salley. Not a bad pickup.

There, probably, are more commitments than are out for public consumption. Players will often commit to a coach, but not announce it anywhere else. Sometimes a coach will ask them not to announce it because they are going after another player at the same position or they are just not 100% sure they want that player. Usually, if a player makes the announcement publicly, it is a solid commitment from both sides. Coaches are not allowed to announce commitments or otherwise talk about recruits until they are signed. These media reports are coming from the players themselves. :coffee:
