Building future home schedules

I have no idea how they pulled it off....I didn't see any big corporate banners that would have insinuated a big sponsor.....nothing looked any different than an ordinary game at the Nest....it was a nice weekend of hoops and next year it will be hosted by EWU with 2 different teams coming to Cheney to play against....BTW, U of South Dakota is a pretty good team that is very well coached....

Thanks for the insight Sac. This is exactly how Big Sky teams can work together to get D1 opponents to visit us. The conference should take this model to every school and see if they can work together to emulate it.

I

Interesting concept. A H/H/H MTE. It's a creative way for mid-majors with scheduling woes to help out each other. I'd love to see us try this with say Denver and New Mexico State. Keep it regional with recognizable names. Might be worth a shot.

I could also get on board with a Big Sky/Big West/WAC Challenge.........(We could make UND play Chicago State)

So this weeks gem from Randy's pre game remarks:

Steve: What did you learn from this weeks game against Pacific union?
Coach: I am not sure we learned anything from that game. It is really hard to gauge performance against that level of competition.

THEN WHY IN THE SAM HELL DID WE BRING THEM IN?

1. Did anyone catch coaches comments in the pre-game on Wednesday? Steve asked coach if they were spending any time at the Gulf Coast Showcase trying to build relationship for future scheduling purposes. Coach said that there wasn't a lot of time for that and he wasn't sure that he would want to play any of the teams in the future. He said that they are too good and aren't that closely located. I really wish we would start taking the Gonzaga and Witchita State model, anyone... anywhere.

2. Sac State might be on to something. This weekend they had a little showcase where they brought in Eastern Washington, Pacific and South Dakota. Sac and Eastern didn't play each other and SD didn't play Pacific. But it got me thinking. What if you had each Big Sky school do one of these events with their travel partner. So we would host it in Ogden one year and bring in Idaho State and two regional D1 schools and the next year we hold it in Pocatello. You would offer return home games to the two regional teams you bring in. In the years that it is in Pocatello, you have a fun little event that fans would travel to. When it is in Ogden you get two D1 on home games.

"SacStateMan: Any insight on how that multi-team event was funded?"

Ok... I talked to the asst AD and he told me they had no corp sponsors....we paid USD's travel and hotel, EWU paid their own travel but we paid for their rooms and UOP is only 40 miles away and they thought they were going to come down here and get 2 D1 wins (surprise, surprise, surprise...they got 2 big L's)....next year we pay our own travel to Cheney and EWU picks up our rooms and the rest is however EWU sets it up...not sure who the other 2 teams will be, but there you have it....worked for us...

So not to keep beating a dead horse but I looked up Montana's schedule because I noticed we had a better record and I found they have quite the OOC schedule.

1/25/2015 North Dakota State Fargo, N.D. L 53-73
11/29/2015 Pepperdine Malibu, Calif. L 63-69
12/4/2015 San Francisco Missoula, Mont. W 82-50
12/8/2015 Gonzaga Spokane, Wash. L 58-61 Box Score
12/12/2015 Washington Seattle, Wash.
12/15/2015 Great Falls Missoula, Mont.
12/19/2015 Kansas Lawrence, Kan.
12/22/2015 Montana-Western Missoula, Mont.

Now Randy & Jerry are going to sit here and say no one will play us BUT montana has more big sky titles and NCAA appearances then us in their tenures at Weber...
Honestly Montana has a great schedule.
What burns my bridge is when Randy says he cant get any judgement from playing the smaller schools. THEN WHY PLAY THEM!!!!!!
Anyway, end rant. :dead:

I have nothing against our road schedule. I think it is fine. I hate our home schedule. That is the part that nobody is willing to play us, here, in OGDEN. THat is the issue. Trying to get home games.

Tal. There is more to that story. The guarantees we offer are below market value. Then Randy makes comments that he doesn't want to bring teams in that are too good. Now he makes more comments about not being able to gauge performance vs. dog NAIA teams. Come on we can't have it both ways. Then we have wasted our best entertainment on the dog games. Anybody want to take bets that the old lady drill team will be the entertainment when we play Multinomah or whatever they are called? How come South Dakota was willing to play Sac for just travel expenses and we can't get them in here.

Montana will be tough. It looks like they are putting it together and I think playing these difficult teams is paying off for them. They have 3 non D1 games as well but they seem not quite be to the level of ours.

I don't think Randy likes to get out of his comfort zone when scheduling. The guarantees, as you stated, were way too low, but then Sac is able to get USD. Maybe USD thought that it would be two quick Ws (which it ended up being for them) and they look at playing at the Dee and won't do it. I don't know, but I think a lot more could be done to generate home games. Weber/Rahe just won't do it. It takes a little imaginations, some work, and lots of relationship building. Things athletics just isnt' good at.

As an outsider looking in I think Randy Rahe doesn't schedule for Weber State...he schedules for Randy Rahe...IMO he doesn't want to schedule ANY team into the Dee that might beat him...he is looking out for his job in the best way he knows and that is to pad the schedule so he can say in contract negotiations "I went 20-11 last year and I need a raise" without saying that 3-4 of those wins were DII or below...at the same time he gets the faithful convinced that no one will play him at home...I just don't buy that no one will play at the Dee....

Since 2011-2012 we have brought into our little bitty hell hole of a gym where we can't possibly garner enough gate money to pay much to the other teams, the following DI teams:
Central Arkansas
McNeese State
North Dakota (before they were in the BSC)
San Jose State
CS Bakersfield
UC Davis (twice)
UC Irvine
UC Riverside
Utah Valley
CS Fullerton
Univ of Portland
U of South Dakota
U of Pacific
U of Incarnate Word

I think that is the total group that we have been able to bring into the Nest...

I think it is funny we are all mad about the home schedule. Truth of the matter is that Weber hasn't played a lot of DI games at home throughout the past 15 years. Most of the time the Cats play 1-2 instate games at home per year and then get 1 more DI team to visit the Dee. On good years, 2 DI teams visit.

Since Randy has become coach, the following DI teams have visited the Dee:
South Dakota State (will on Dec 22)
Cal State Bakersfield
San Fran
UC Santa Barbara
Long Beach
Seattle
San Jose State
UC Irvine
Oral Roberts
UT-Arlington
Portland

Under Cravens:
Boise State
Elon
Nevada
Winthrop
Green Bay
Savannah State
Portland

Cravens got a few more DI games per year, but he also had SUU as an out of conference foe and all the other state schools were home and home deals (Utah, UVU, BYU, and USU).

Now...Utah won't play in Ogden anymore. BYU wants 2 for 1 and thankfully, Rahe has started playing UVU again. USU will, most likely, always be a home and home. Losing Utah off the schedule and now that SUU is a conference team hurts our OOC. Cravens' average was higher because he had 2 more instate DI options. This is the history. Also, we have averaged 2 DII, DIII, or NAIA teams per year since 2001.

Randy also had the benefit of bracket buster games as these three were.
UC Irvine
Oral Roberts
UT-Arlington

Its time to start thinking outside the box. Since the conference won't come up with a challenge. Why don't we partner up with Montana and do what Sac and Eastern did. Not that I want to play any more games in Missoula, but they would be the best partner to draw some decent names and the Griz have proven that they will play pretty much anyone.

I'd be all for the Big Sky going to a balanced schedule -- four more D-1 games for every school, including two more home games each season that have some meaning.

As far as scheduling goes, I don't think anyone is afraid of coming to the DEE, i think Randy is scared to get his ass beat at home :twocents: It's the old Stu model, bring in a bunch of cupcakes to make your overall record look awesome.

Sad thing is, Jerry supports it. When there was that Big Sky commissioner talk in Ogden, Jerry was saying how hard they try for home and homes. I mean i get some teams wont come here but this is ridiculous!

you cant show me much of any D1 teams that have come to ogden in the past 10 yrs excluding games we didn't schedule aka bracketbusters, conf tourney, and of course in-state games that happen no matter what.

what d1 teams are left that have come to the dee?

sjsu once or twice
long beach
san fran
....?

Washington St. to Moscow on Friday, the vandals with a respectable home win over pac-x. I've lost track, someone remind me the excuses of why NO ONE will come to Ogden?

You do realize that Washington State is like 15 mins away from Moscow,Idaho and the University of Idaho right? It is virtually a home game for the Cougars. Still...the utes are less than an hour away from Ogden but refuse to play us. Pretty sweet deal that Idaho can still get a Pac-12 team to visit its home court. I don't see why LK is against coming to Ogden. Most of the Dee would be utah homers, townies, and wannabies.

Also, sir velo (catcat...you are becoming like Prince dude) please see my above post. Those are all of the teams that have visited the Dee sans the CIT field.
