OC position has an offer out:
Current Weber State offensive coordinator Matt Hammer has a job offer in hand from Big Sky rival Sacramento State, but sources around the program say he is waiting to see whether he will be retained by the incoming Wildcats coach, whoever it may be.

Hammer is waiting to see who WSU selects as its next coach before he makes a decision on the Sac State offer. WSU has said they plan to make a HC selection by next week. Sounds like we will have to wait until then.

This guy sounds like he would really like to stay in Utah if possible. I think we should pass and keep looking, there has to me more qualified candidates out there at this time of year.

I agree, need somebody who wants to be here.

Who's to say he doesn't. Look he is doing what all of us do in our own professional fields: evaluate all offers. In this case with WSU, he wants to know if the incoming coach has the same offensive philosophy, or even trying to see if he can get more money to boot. Who wouldn't do that? We all would like to stay in the same place for a while because you start to put down roots, hassles of moving, etc. But if the offer for us is too good to pass up, he will come.

+1
Sometimes it pays-off to play the wait and see game. That is what is going on on both sides here. Sperbeck smartly moved quickly, now his waiting to see what develops at Weber St.

Craft looks to be OK as OC (more than 4300 passing yards in his first year at San Diego State), but I hope nobody expects him to be a HC (no, nobody's suggested that yet). Other than the offense, he was absolutely HORRIBLE with the Aztecs.

I STILL want to go to UCLA to get our new OC....

Except that Angus is making about $110,000 at UCLA! Our D. Coordinator Anthony Parker makes $54,000.
Looks like the rest of our assistants make about $40,000 each.

Good point, GL. But money may not be the only consideration when it comes to "going home." A shot to come home as OC/assistant HC (positions he's held before) and a promise to anoint him as the "heir apparent" could be enough to lure him home.

Will Sperbeck/Wanless do this? Given what they did to Baiz and Jonny O, probably not. But it's certainly something to think about.

If you go on aztecmesa.proboards.com you'll find mixed opinions about his tenure at SDSU. He did have substance problems while HC there. But many also feel that he was let down and neglected by the admin at SDSU. He doesn't need to have HC aspirations at Sac St. I think would appreciate being OC at Sac St.

With Neuheisel getting canned, will your boy Angus be kept around? He’s got solid credentials for a positions coach but I’m not sold that he has what is needed to serve as an OC somewhere. Also as GL pointed out, I have a hard time seeing someone take a 63.7% pay cut regardless of the "coming home" effect.

WSU will be naming its next coach Tuesday at 11 am local time (10 am Pacific). We will probably find out if Hammer accepts the Sac offer shortly thereafter...if not sooner.

We need a OC who can recruit and develop a QB. Not a JC or a transfor, but a good high school candidate. A candidate who can play three good years, When he graduates, have another kid come right after him.

easier said then done. there is only so much a coach can do. it has much more to do with the work ethic of the kid and it is not easy to get that vibe from a 17 or 18 year old.

John L. Smith to Weber St

Now, we wait for Hammer's decision.

From the Weber Board it looks like they will announce John L. Smith as their HC tomorrow. You would think Smith would meet would meet with the staff and decide who he will retain before the end of the week.
I feel slightly uncomfortable on offering Hammer the job unless Sperbeck sees a upside to the guy that's not apparent on his resume'. His experience seems pretty limited and basically confined to Utah. What would he bring to the table recruiting in California? I just think there must be better candidates out there with more of a track record, willing to come here. There are a lot of coach/staff changes this time of year it's not like we have to rush and name a OC right now. I hope for the best.

My bad, I posted the wrong link. It was suppose to be the Footballscoop.com

SD: Correction. Angus was run game coordinator at Buffalo under Turner Gill. Dummy me misconstrued that in my head to full OC.

:ohno:

How about this Hammer(schmidt), if the Hammer from WSU doesn't come through. This one has recent ties to California.

Scuttlebutt is that Hammer isn't interested in hanging around for the John L. Smith era at Weber State.

I realize it's not easy, but getting a vibe ? Well, Hornets havn't found a vibe in long long time.

Does Jake Geringer count? Will be a red shirt freshman next season, highly rated, groomed to be the heir apparent.

We can only hope so. He might need another year in the system before he is ready but we might not have that luxury.

Geringer graduated HS a semester early so he has a extra spring camp under his belt. I would expect him to be a little more comfortable with the system than a normal RS Freshman, there should be some healthy competition at QB. Unlike some here I thought Safron and Edwards showed potential and did a good job under difficult conditions in the last few games. I know that there were some timing errors, overthrows etc. but that was to be expected considering the lack of experience. Remember when Fleming first arrived the knock on him was that he couldn't pass very well. By mid season he had settled in, became familiar with the receivers and started to click. Who knows maybe another MBT or Fleming drop down will suddenly appear. The more competition at every position the better!
