'Cats Lose To BYU

Good hell, it was 1 game. this team isn't dead and DOES NOT have serious issues. Say what you want but WSU missed Bull and Mook.
BYU-Utah is hot right now and are almost un-beatable at home. How bout you all just chill, and realize this WSU team is still playing very hard and will be just fine.
How many teams will WSU face that have that many big guys that can shoot like that? NONE.
Big Sky Champs is all that matters. Win the Conference tourney and you go to the Big Dance.
GO WILDCATS!!!

Probab once more and in total 4 OOC games. serious issues is overboard for me but everyone has the right to be mad at losing instate games. they are important to us. but i would say injury wise we have seroius issues. we cant lose a starter per game and be ok. if we can head into conf with an 8-3 record that would be something we haven't don in quite a while.

standard said this aabout the game:
"Weber State also had some players battling with the flu bug, but Wildcats coach Randy Rahe wouldn't use that as an excuse."

I still think this Wildcat team is 8-3 come conf start, but we as fans do have the right to be fricken mad when a team that is supposed to do great things continues to under-perform, I never thought we would beat HVU, but that was plain ridiculous and embarassing.

Even hanging in the game with a surging BYU and losing by single digits will gain some respect but getting blown out... :ohno:

I wish it was possible to play one game here one game there for one insate team each year. THen even with a mess like this we could atleast have a chance to put up at fight at home.

Who said the team was dead? They definitely have issues, but not serious ones. They certainly will miss Bullinger and Otis, but I'm not going to pretend that this is some unstoppable team that is destined for success because they are "playing so hard." I hear that from parents and grandparents of crappy prep athletes on a regular basis, thinking the world should be given to them because they "work hard." AJ could try pulling his tongue out of this team's butthole and take a step back and look at his favorite team objectively. I'm pulling for 'em and hope they get it together and get healthy heading into conference play, but how about you hold off on pinning the ribbon to their chest until they actually accomplish something?

Okay...soooo this team isnt as amazing as we originally thought, but that doesnt mean they are terrible. Weber has a lot of talent and are developing into a better team. Right now they are going through some growing pains. These things happen, especially when two starters are out, and the entire team is sick with flu like symptons.

BYU has a good team...I thought, before last night, that Weber was the better team, and at Full Strength might be. But you've got to hand it to them and Coach Rose. At the first of the season they were really struggling, but now are playing great. They are really balanced and are still an excellent passing team. Last night was a good game for our guys to play. It will do one of two things, make them hungry for success or they will quit. I'm hoping for the first option.

With Bull and Mook out...Weber really will need their available/remaining (YIKES) bigs to be far more effecient when they are on the floor. Fulton and Tres really need to learn how to kick the ball out when hitting a shot isn't an option. Look at the Y...they had a handful of wide open looks from kickouts. I thought, for the most part, our bigs played pretty good defense. Weber got a lot of shots, they just weren't falling. That concerns me, but I'd rather have them not falling now and have them falling later when they really count.

Positives:
1. Wheelright got some great minutes last night. I feel bad that he didnt' get to play more, but...
2. At the end Weber started passing more and getting into their offense.
3. Hajek will only get better...loved how he was screwing with their students when they were imitating USU.
4. Even though our shots weren't falling...our guys kept trying.
5. Fulton had an assist.
6. Bam's shot looks like it is coming back. He had a good game, even though he was really sick.

We are not dead. This is not the end of the world, as we know it.

With that said, If I was the coach, I'd put some new rules in.

1) No 4s or 5s can not take a shot unless one of two criteria are met. You have tallied at least 5 rebounds/assists or you received the ball directly from an offensive rebound.
2) Nobody can shoot on their first touch, on each posession, unless on a fast break or early O.
3) Anyone who fails to block out twice in a row will get the opportunity to leave the game for a time sufficient enough to have thought about what they just didn't do.
4) Anybody who's man scores twice in a row on them will get the same oportunity as above.
5) Anyone shooting a fade away at any time during the game will run a set amount of stairs, per fade away, in the next practice.

Of course, if I was the coach, half the team would probably quit.

How the hell on God's green earth could you think that our team is getting better? Seriously? We just got beat by the Y by 28 points, we got beat by Saint Mary's by 17! You guys are harpin on me and Hawks because we aren't wearing our purple eyeglasses and drinking our purple kool-aid. This team is playing TERRIBLY. We lost to BYU by 6 when they had Jimmer and we didn't have Damian last season. :tothehand:

I thought you guys, football team, were getting better when you got your asses handed to you by Cal Poly in 07. Look what happened...you used the experience to get better and to improve; didn't you?

As a former athlete, you should know how hard it is to play when you have the flu (couldn't sub anyone out, they were all sick last night). You could tell that the team, overall, wasnt' well. a lot of their shots were barely missing. A great indication of tired legs and not being able to elevate.

The team had a lot of open shots last night, they just weren't falling. Rose acknowledged that. He knows Weber wasn't at their best. If the Cats hit some more shots, the game would have been a lot different. Would Weber have won? Probably not, but...Also, the Y was shooting out of their minds.

Shit happens.

So what you are saying is that those fans who aren't throwing their team under the bus are the bad fans? :wtf:

Last night was ugly - but it was just one game. I agree that you just forget about it and move on.

All that matters is:
1. Win the regular season conference championship so you can host the tournament
2. Win the conference tournament and go to the big dance.

All this other stuff in the preseason is just to get ready for conference - I'm not worried.
With some better health and more experience, this team will be just fine.

At least we are not Utah

Yeah but we owned up and were accountable for our actions. We had to make major moves after that game and realize we weren't the "dream team" we thought we were. We kicked Jimmy Barnes to the curb and I saw Coach Mac erupt in anger and promptly held people accountable. ----> :thefan: and head's rolled. I expect the same for our bball program. I'm doing the same among us loyal Weber State fans, don't settle for complacency, demand accountability and respect. I see too many people comfortable, coaches, players and fans alike that see yesterday's result as acceptable. I am calling it as it is, we sucked it up big time and embarrased our school, our community and our fanbase that is yearning for Weber athletics to find it's way off of life support. It seems as soon as we find our way into the spotlight we poop down our legs and then find a million excuses. Coach Clune always said "Find a way, not an excuse."

That said, I know BYU is an awesome team, but they aren't 28 point victory great.

If our guys are sick we need to work the ball for an open easy shot. If your not 100% why make things hard? Yes we had a few open shot that wont fall but so did the Y and they got more chances and made the most of them. I think with more ball movement we will be ok. And we need that D we had against USU if the first half. Havent seen that since then..

To put things in perspective:

NAU scored a grand total of 40 and 39 points in their last two games. They have zero wins against division 1 competition this season. They have 4 post players total....none of whom have division 1 collegiate experience. 297th in points per game and 271st in field goal percentage. 9 players who have never played division 1 basketball before. NAU averaged 20+ turnovers in their first four losses of the season (though I'll give credit where it is due as that has been cut drastically the last two games). The losses have been by an average of 18 points. Gabe Rogers coming back for conference schedule will definitely help the cause but won't fix the rest of the team shooting horribly and just plain being inexperienced. I must be a masochist as I continue to watch religiously but I've accepted early on that it's going to be a looooong season.

Re: the rest of the conference. I believe Montana will improve as they go but they are not lighting up the basketball world. EWU has shown promise to go along with a few let downs. The rest of the Big Sky seems to be a mixed bag.

Things are far from dark for Weber State.

You are absolutely right Mt. Jack...it is all a matter of perspective. Thanks for your post. I hope that the Jacks can get it together and start playing better basketball.

Let's look at the bright side. We got a personal demonstration of how TEAM play and sound fundamentals and defense TRUMPS talent!!! BYU had six players in double figures! Even though we (mostly Lillard) were quicker and faster, they pressured us! Why? Because they new they had HELP defense behind them and they trusted their team mates! Sound defense, unselfish play and passing, shooting good shots with confidence (not afraid to miss or make a mistake). No, the season isn't over, yes, we could still run the table in the Big Sky, but starting with Rahe, we need to take a hard look in the mirror and evaluate objectively what is wrong and be willing to swallow some pride and change some things! I agree with Old Runner! And what's more, I think coach Rahe needs to ask himself why players he has seen play intense, energetic, confident basketball are clamming up and afraid to move and/or taking bad/off balance shots and/or not playing intense defense, etc. One other thing I would like to add to Old Runner's list and perhaps it is implied but why do our bigs NEVER kick the ball out to a spotted up shooter? It is a black whole when it gets dumped in and the back in turn around jumper works on occasion but not every time! And we have great shooters out there that can take advantage of the in-and-out game!
