Changing offense

According the The Sports Network, Big Sky spring preview, we are switching to spread offense. Anyone in the "know" have info on this?

Cannot confirm but did hear players mention that this is the direction the offense was going next season. Did see some indications of this towards the end of last season. Team ran more and more 4 wide with one back the last few games instead of the 1 or 2 TE sets. Vander Velde hardly played in the final game.

For those that know more about the x's and o's, would this move be good for a young/struggling offensive line? Spread them out and get the ball out quickly?

Absolutely. Wider splits, less defenders in the box, quick slants, bubble screens, etc. These will all also help our running game by creating space and forcing the defense to play an extra DB. Should be fun to watch. Go Bears!

Ugh this sucks, I hate the spread...

I enjoyed watching Texas Tech and Perdue (under Tiller) when they would run it. Lots of fun to watch but it seems to put a lot of pressure on having a good and very fit defense.

Here's the thing, UNC doesn't have, nor will have the skill position talent to run the spread... the receivers they get are like middle tier RMAC level. To make the spread devastating you need to out "athlete" your opponent which UNC will never do.

We should be running the option and trying to run out the clock from the opening kick off.

I have no interest in watching some Dominic Breazeale clone throw 45 incompletions a game.

"The Spread" offense is a lot of different components. Actually, first and foremost it is an option based offense. The concept involves aqb reading the end man on line away from where the back goes (generally). If the read"bites on the dive back", the qb pulls and takes the edge. The offense has one man up on the defense because one guy is the read.
Other spread schemes involve the above with a motion man as yet another option.
A whole other component is the quick read bubble screen combo that typically holds three options.
The entire attack can obviously be very effective, and can be used to cover up a number of weaknesses. This staff has attempted to run these types of schemes before.

Don't ever mention that name again. :tothehand:

The spread offense can be a lot of things. It can be an "Air Raid" type system like Brian and Blofeld are describing or it can feature a zone read attack like mountainbear is talking about. I'll withhold judgement until I see what we do out of the spread. Auburn and Oregon each ran for 250+ yards per game last year out of the spread.

Please go back and read the posts from late 2010 and early in 2011.
Speculation of the spread offense, researching
Alcorn, we are a funny bunch.....back to the future.
If for no other reason than humor, go back and read us. I know we all wrote younger, thinner, more fit and optimistic back then.

Fortunately the first two games will allow our "feet to get wet" with the new offense. If we have difficulty running it against Western or Houston Baptist, then the rest of the season could prove to be very taxing on our "D" as they will have little rest. I think the key will be the play of our O-line, specifically, tackle to tackle. I am interested to see if there will be a blocking TE or H back. Last year, whenever (it was rare) they had TE Leonard and FB Zamora block on the same side, they had moderate success in running. This year they will need to count on the interior O-line if they run a true spread. We will see.

Neither of those games is a feet get wet game. Western State almost upset CSU-P last season and Houston Baptist gave the Bears all they could handle at home Can't imagine it will be any easier down in Houston this season. The Bears will be lucky to walk away with a win down there.

If we go down to Houston and win I'll be shocked... last year they were basically a Jr college with only sophomores and freshman and gave UNC all they could handle at home.

The most important thing to remember is to support the kids. ALL coaches come and go (some faster than others and others not soon enough). That said, let's not focus on how greedy this staff has been, rather we need to say things positive about a group of young men who are trying to deal with a rotten set of circumstances. Let's keep this team in our prayers and know that dealing with this adversity will make everybody (players, families and coaches) stronger.

Yep, I agree, they should get ice cream and lolipops after the games for trying hard!

Wow, no wonder this program is a dumpster fire with expectations like this...

Kaydee......with all due respect, the players (kids) and their families knew what they were signing up for. ....if not, they either neglected to do any research, had no other options, or were horrible misled.
I don't think a participant on this board is "down" on the players.
As far as staff greed.....if the word is defined as the desire to have more than what is deserved, one win would see this staff as successful.

The players (kids) know the truth and are forced to deal with the circumstance daily.

MountainBear,
Thanks for your comments. I guess I was letting my emotions get the better of me because of the knowledge of what some of the families are going through in regards to what they were promised. A lot of that distrust could be reversed if only the staff reached out to the parents once in a while and spoke to the parents, like they promised they would when they were recruiting their kid. I know that some of the coaches talk to some of the parents, while others haven't heard from a coach since their kid started playing for them. Like any successful business, communication, trust and relationships are vital. And it is my opinion that the lack of success on the field can be equally placed on the shoulders of Dr. Norton, Mr. Dunn and Coach Collins - the leaders.
