Portland State tight end Charlie Taumoepeau named to Walter Payton Award watch list

In this conference to succeed, it has been proven over and over that you need either a good, strong defense to shut down all the high flying offenses in the conference, or you need an experienced quarterback and at least one sure handed receiver in order to have a successful conference season. Between Alexander and Taumoepeau, we've got the second prerequisite down. I like this.

TE winners

Charlie Taumoepeau, Portland State. While a 4.75 isn't outstanding at the tight end spot, the rest of Taumoepeau's workout was. He tied for the second-highest vertical and had a 7.00 in the three cone.

2020 NFL Draft: Big Sky (D-IAA) Conference Scouting Reports

https://www.profootballnetwork.com/big-sky-scouting-reports-2020-nfl-draft/

Charlie Taumoepeau, TE, Portland State Vikings

Positives: Reliable pass catcher who could line up as a tight end or H-back at the next level. Fluidly releases off the line of scrimmage, quickly gets into routes and plays with balance. Comes back to the quarterback and keeps the play in bounds after the catch. Extends his hands to offer the quarterback a target and makes the reception away from his frame. Blocks with leverage, fires off the snap and gives effort.

Negatives: Possesses average strength and really does not get much movement as a run blocker. Ran well at the combine but shows average burst.

Analysis: Highly graded by scouts entering the season, Taumoepeau is a solid pass catcher with a number of questions about his game. He may not have a true position at the next level, but a creative offensive coordinator will find a spot for him, and Taumoepeau’s approach to the game could help him make a roster.

San Francisco 49ers conduct interview with former Portland State star Charlie Taumoepeau ahead of the 2020 NFL draft: Report

The San Francisco 49ers possess arguably the best tight end in the NFL in George Kittle, but they may be looking for a backup in the 2020 NFL draft, which begins Thursday.

The 49ers conducted a FaceTime interview with former Portland State Vikings tight end Charlie Taumoepeau, according to a report. The 49ers were one of four teams - Green Bay Packers, Atlanta Falcons, Arizona Cardinals - who have conducted a virtual interview with Taumoepeau, according to the report.

#Portland TE (and Senior Bowl participant) Charlie Taumoepeau has recently held pre-draft meetings over FaceTime with #Packers, #49ers, #Cardinals & #Falcons.

The 6-3, 245-pound Taumoepeau posted 36 catches, 474 yards and two touchdowns during the 2019 season, earning his second consecutive selection to the All-Big Sky Conference first team squad. Taumeopeau caught 117 passes for 1,876 yards and 11 touchdowns over 41 games and 28 starts.

Taumoepeau played both tight end and H-back for Portland State, making him an intriguing prospect for the 49ers. Taumoepeau could potentially be the backup to Kittle at tight end and Kyle Juszczyk at the H-back position.

Taumeopeau is projected as a late round selection or possibly signed as an undrafted free agent.

DALLAS COWBOYS — CHARLIE TAUMOEPEAU, TE

247Sports’ take: With Jason Witten finally done with Dallas, Blake Jarwin could use some help at tight end for the team. At his worst mark in four years, Taumoepeau averaged 13.2 yards per catch. As someone that will not be asked to be TE1, this is a potentially strong backup.

CBS Sports’ take: CBS Sports' Patrik Walker also pointed me in the direction of James Madison edge rusher Ron'Dell Carter, who I liked as a prospect. I even considered Texas Tech offensive tackle Terence Steele before settling on Taumoepeau. He is a well-balanced young player who could carve out a niche in that offense.
