Wonder if this has anything to do with the new President.

Maybe but As per the article I'm guessing it also has to do double the athletics budget and a huge bump in pay.

IMO losing Chaves would be a huge hit. Look back at athletics during his tenure and it is impressive. With that said the really scary thought is SHE would be choosing a new AD. :ohno: :ohno: :ohno:

I think everyone should email her office to ask for a comment on the state of EWU Football facilities and the trend of people leaving. Otherwise, the other schools will use this for recruiting and WILL effect recruiting and possibly set this program back.

I've seen Idaho facilities up close and their facilities are great and should be one of the best for FCS level. I don't see how EWU keeps up with them, and they're right in our backyard. Strong leadership from the administration is needed now more than ever. Hopefully, it happens.

Not just AN email, but we should all be sending daily emails until answers are provided. It can even be the same email. As alumni, fans and season ticket holders, we have a right to know.

Here are some emails for everyone to take down. Start sending emails to the President and CC the others to show they're not alone in fighting for answers for our athletes and the state of our athletic programs.

[email protected]
[email protected] (VP for University Advancement)

Hello,

As a 1988 graduate of EWU, it has been exciting to see both the academic and athletic progress that Eastern has made over the years.

In the past year, EWU has lost its football coach, basketball coach, cross country coach and the now current Athletic Director is considering leaving EWU as well. This can't be a coincidence and the lack of information on upgrading the football facilities is distressing, to say the least.

While other FCS schools such as Idaho and South Dakota have been able to secure to donations to upgrade their facilities EWU hasn't attempted to do the same If this isn't the case I'm glad to be corrected. The perception from the outside is that there is no plan. I realize that EWU doesn't have the resources to carry this burden themselves which is where the alumni and booster community come in. But with no plan, no one is going to donate plain and simple.

These upgrades not only affect the athletic programs but the academic side as well as it attracts future students through name recognition, television coverage, and athletic success. So many more high school students where I live here in Seattle are aware of EWU because of the success of the football program. On a recent car purchase, I had vanity license plates installed with the word "NFERNO" as my license plate number. The majority of people that comment on my plates know exactly what NFERNO means.

If your office allows the program to slide it will have a long-term impact on the academic side as well. Alumni like myself will lose interest not only in financially assisting athletics but academics as well.

Gonzaga's basketball program is a perfect example of how athletic success leads to the benefit of the academic community through name recognition, increased donations and wide demographics of future students that are drawn to a school that's nationally recognized.

By standing pat, other schools will use this inactivity or impression of inactivity in recruiting student-athletes away from EWU. I hope you will consider improving Mr. Chaves' compensation to keep him in Cheney for many years to come. If you are unable to retain him I hope the same resources will be available to his successor so momentum won't be lost.

I think some of you are reading more into this than reality dictates. Baldwin left for a lot more money. There's no way Eastern can match $500k+. Hayford wasn't exactly Mr. Popular around the university and did very little to help the department as a whole. Frankly, I think Shantay Legans is an upgrade. Take away the preposterous schedule he had to face, and his performance has been quite admirable. Cross Country? I don't remember that program being all that prominent... Ever?

Most of Chaves success has been in hiring and retaining coaches. Best was a good hire, but a logical one. Legans is the same. The only outside coach he went out and secured was Chad Bodnar, a fantastic hire, and he's still here. I wouldn't be concerned at all if Chaves leaves to pursue a new opportunity.

IMO, the biggest thing to drill the Pres on is the football facilities issue. We've been completely stuck in neutral for YEARS. Sammammish says it well... No plan has been communicated and without a concrete plan and timeline, donors aren't going to be motivated to give any money. In fairness to her, she inherited this issue. She didn't create it. Of course, she hasn't done anything to correct it either.

Also, I'm not sure where the Gateway Project came from, but we basically lost five years to the stupid plan. It was unrealistic and never had a chance of success. Chaves was pushing it hard making statements about how it wasn't a matter of "if," but "when." Here we are in 2018 and it's been totally canceled. It was a terrific waste of time. Had we pushed a realistic upgrade of 6,000 seats in a standard grandstand, this could very well be completed by now. I can't understand how an administration that can't figure out how to do the simplest of upgrades ever thought a $75mm mega-project was reasonable.

Yow will notice that there in no email for Chaves or phone # he took them down several years ago. He had no interest in your or my input. He destroyed the EAA piece by piece. Ron Raver and then Scott Barnes tok 25 years to build the EAA with its many volunteers. if your old enough you will remember getting call each year f:orm many of us about your annual pledge

Sorry computer is giving me fits.
He stopped that and started using student callers and you lost the personal touch. This was always a hugh event the month before the Killin event. He took the Annual Raver golf event and then the Killin Spring dinner and dance away from the EAA. He told the EAA board that the athletic dept would do a better Job and that the EAA should sign over these events to athletics. You see all the funds went to the EAA and he had to come to the board and ask for those funds each year which they were always given. Then when the board was with out activities he then sweet talked them into changing the bylaws over to the Eagle Athletic Fund and then he had total control and you have no active volunteers to fund raise and participate for Eastern. This group was about 100 volunteers strong and a membership of about 1000 when he became AD. All those 25 plus years of building momentum are all gone and have been for the last 5 or so years.
So now there is no organization to rally the supporters into action and this is one reason why the Stadium project is stalled. It would be fine if we had fat cats to fund these items but we do not.
I just want those of you who are great supporters, that live away from Cheney to know what has happened over the last six years or so. Maybe some of you remember those calls from many of us asking for your annual pledge and telling you what was going on in Athletics.
Now you know why we as supporters are so impotent in this matter. The EAA was your voice and now you have a FUND.
I am sorry it is a sad story.

FYI, I was and still am a huge supporter of the Gateway project and would have made substantial donations. I will not give to a mini upgrade that would prove to be a waste in future years.

I never got a call from EAA but do get calls from students and make donations.

A lot of merging topics here. Here are a couple cheap thoughts.

Very concerned there appears to be no coordinated professional efforts to get some positive momentum back into stadium improvement. No apparent efforts for corporate sponsors, no apparent efforts for big donors, and clearly no efforts for the more average donors (10 X $1,000 donations = $10,000 and on up). I haven't been hit up once in many years. In fact, I screwed up my donation renewal once and didn't hear about it for months. An unrelated issue drew it to my attention. Also, A coordinated "giving day" made roughly 250,000 in a day. Is athletics even trying?

Donation levels and revenue for season tickets and tailgate spots have increased dramatically in the last several years. What are we getting?

Someone in the higher administration needs to clearly formulate and communicate a plan that includes the benefits of a stadium upgrade beyond the 5 scheduled Saturdays a year. Upgrades need to connect with the school as a whole. That is why I liked the Gateway concept.

I like Chaves. I like a lot of the media he contributes too, and I feel like he is a good fit at EWU. More importantly, why are we paying our AD like a high school AD and less than a high school principal?

A lot of this is probably happening, but is it happening if no one knows? Also, I don't have any interaction with the president, but as time goes on, general concern increases.

I don't get it. The Gateway Project is a dead issue. It was a complete waste of time. It was just a diversionary tool that never even got started. Why support a project that only exists on some blueprint? Why not support something that actually gets built? I felt like this whole bait-and-switch to an all new stadium North of the current venue to be just another false promise. Why spend time talking about these things that'll never materialize?

I'd rather just hear the AD and Pres commit to building a project and giving a hard, honest figure for how much needs to be raised and then set a start date. It isn't going to be everything we want it to be. That's obvious by now. Let's just figure out what'll work, what we can be sure to complete, and get moving. Getting this kind of honest information out of university admin has been a long time coming.

The Gateway was grand as it should be. If there is no vision we will NEVER get to something we can be proud of. I won't be pacified with better bleachers, because if you are satisfied with that Eastern facilities will always be seen as mediocre.
