Coach Bone

The interview of Coach Bone was a short one, but an extremely interesting one. He said he wouldn't have come to Portland State (he had a very good job at UW) without a strong commitment from the President and Athletic Director for the basketball program, and although those positions have been changed with different people, that the commitment has been even stronger then he thought it would be.
Bone hinted at how strong the program will be in the future, with the likes of Dominic Waters (WAC freshman of the year two years ago from Grant HS), Phil Nelson (a transfer from UW and a McNary HS graduate), and Jamie Jones (UP's leading rebounder and 2nd leading scorer) in the wings for next year. He didn't mention, but the Viks will have 6-11 Jason Conrad from Gilroy HS in California next year, too.

Was he as trite, insipid, and cliched as ever?? Full of nondescript, uninsightful comments, as always??
That is one borrrrrrrrring, uninspiring man. Not a lot of intellectual depth there, imo.

I came away with mixed feelings as that is probably the most I've ever heard from Bone in one sitting. I appreciate his honesty, but I'd like a bit more of a salesman in my head coach. When asked about upgrades to facilities and increased student involvement, he really doesn't present any vision for where he thinks PSU could go in the future. If anything, his lack of enthusiasm left me feeling like he couldn't wait for the first chance to jump ship.

He sure doesn't like interviews much, that's for sure. On the other hand, he must be doing something right as far as coaching is concerned. The contrast to Glanville is stark. A man of few words who likes to keep his cards close to his chest. As far as intellect is concerned, it may be all concentrated on basketball and his players. No hype; little emotion showing. Just an ordinary guy with little experience in public speaking. He may relax a little, maybe not. If it gets us to the NCAA, who's complaining?

I liked it. Especially because he is exactly as you described him, I thought what he said sounded quite euphoric. Especially the part about the arena and the kind of support he is receiving from admin.

Don't get me wrong, if he can get us to the tourny, we can build a statue in his honor. We are winning, and that is what counts.

You guys are unbelievable. He has just produced the best season in PSU basketball history and you are picking at how well he does stupid radio interviews? Who cares. Apparently he knows what to say to recruits because he sure gets them.

I'd rather have a boring guy in the NCAA tourney than a "man in black" at 3-8.
Nah, don't say that. The season record's a shame, no doubt, but J.G. is the best that could've ever happened to PSU Athletics.

While you guys are nattering on about Bone's interview style, his coaching style has just got us into the tournament finals. What a game! Tomorrow will be faster; no slow-down zones thrown at us. Tonight was a coaching game; tomorrow will be "Who's got the best players?".

The more I think about this, I think Bone could get the UW job, which I'm guessing is his dream gig, if he waits a couple of years for Romar to get fired. I don't see alot of other obvious stepping stones for him since he clearly has interest in remaining in the NW. The Huskies have really dipped the last two years, and they don't look like they'll turn the corner in a rough Pac-10 anytime soon.

I agree with the "Man of Vision". Except its not garaunteed that he will have this kind of success again.

I hope he sticks around!

I hope he sticks around to finish what he's started. I think if he can continue this pattern and we have an arena plan in the works, he's opt to stay and grow this program.
