Subject: Pre-Season Questions

Coach Sperbeck,

I am contacting you on behalf of a Hornets fan site called SacBuzz.com. We boast 100+ users (made up of former hornet athletes, alumni, etc.), hundreds of topics, and thousands of posts. We may not always agree on everything, but one thing we can agree on is wanting to know more about what we can expect from our Hornets this year.

So, I've compiled some questions suggested by various users of the site. We're not sure if you'll have time or feel comfortable answering our questions, but anything you're willing to contibute would truly uplift the Hornet Faithful. Whether you answer one question, all of them, or none at all we would like you to know that we can't wait until August 30th.

Thank you so much for your time. Please find our questions below.

Kindest Regards,

Kadeezy

Had you heard of SacBuzz.com prior to this e-mail? Yes

How are things different in year two vs. year one as an FCS coach? Familiarity with players and staff

Will the experienced LB core be able to lead this year's defense after the losses to the defensive secondary? We expect our LB core to anchor our defense

I think everyone is excited to see what Bryan Hilliard can do this year. Who should fans expect to see sharing the carries with him? Evander Wilkins, Jake Croxdale and Anthony Biasi

What has the Broad done to change attitudes? Everyone has a stronger sense of pride and belief that we are moving our athletic program in the right direction

What's it like to have a new office with a killer view? The entire broad center has been good for the whole athletic program

We've all noticed what seems to be an emphasis on recruiting locally, can you expand on your rational/efforts in doing so? We have good highschool football in the Sacramento region. I believe the fans will have a strong interest and loyalty to supporting our local players. Hopefully this brings more fans to games and more support to our program.

Have you started any new traditions you can share with the Hornet Faithful? Come see for yourself on August 30th

Is this the year we "revesre the curse" against Davis? Yes

Are there any plans to changes the stadium surface to FieldTurf? There has been some discussion

I wish I would have asked him more questions! I would just like to express my thanks to Coach Sperbeck and we all can't wait for for this year to start!

TAKE THAT SACBEE!

I would have like to have asked him if he thinks that Sac State will play Cal Poly again in the near future.

Dang, shoulda suggested that LAST week! lol

Great job Kadeezy. I think we made the best choice in getting Coach Sperbeck. He is awesome and I can't wait for his teachings to bear fruit this year.

Roll your eyes if you want, but it is a shame that two schools that have such a great football history together are not playing each other.

Sac State was smart to leave Cal Poly off the schedule this year because the Mustangs are loaded. They return 10 starters off the number one 2007 FCS offense.

In 2009 is a year the Hornets may want to consider scheduling Cal Poly again. 8 of the offensive starters will graduate and Cal Poly will be in a rebuilding mold.

Stang, there is no other team I want to face year in and out more than Poly. Most of us Hornet fans have told the admin that we want you guys on the sked every year....its falling on deaf ears. I don't understand why Wanless is afraid of playing. I know Sperbeck isn't.

If you really want to be effective, I suggest getting hundreds of Poly fans to write and/or email Wanless to get the game back. That would open the eyes more than just our fans. I have already done my part and will keep beating that drum until the game is finally rescheduled.

I have heard the same thing on this end. Sperbeck is willing, but Wanless is not. One thing I do not understand is the Cal Poly game is always a good draw at the gate and money usually talks. I am hoping after Sac State has a very good year this season they will reconsider. Also with the cost of fuel playing a games that are bus rides instead of flights will become even more attractive.

On a side note, Davis is playing Fresno State in 2009 and Cal Poly is negotiating a game with the Bulldogs for 2010. Pat Hill said he would like to see a game each year against Sac State, Cal Poly or UC Davis on a rotating basis. He said that he feels each will be in the WAC in the future.

We will play Poly again when we are ready.

Why hang a L on a building program? Any W is a positive if in perception only.

Good luck to Poly and davis against Fresno, I can see either team knocking them off.
We hung with them for awhile last year.
I'd like to see us add San Jose. Wait till Tomey leaves though.

Negative boys. This one lasts another year. :D

The only good thing about your team is the defense. I think that Denham is going to struggle this year, much like Smith last year. The losing streak comes to an end this year.

Kad- Lets see if Coach Sperbeck will do a weekly Q and A during the season. That would definitely promote the buzz.com. He mentioned he knew of the site. He may be a reader. Keeping the questions general like you did was a smart idea. Any thoughts about a weekly?

Doing this via email probably isn't a smart idea. It's one more thing that will be allowed to slide once the season starts and each week's preps get in full swing.

A better choice (if Kadeezy or anyone else can make it) is the weekly booster meeting. I know Volek had those in the defense room of the old field house. I don't know if Moosh continued those or if Sperbeck is, but I certainly hope so. It was a catered affair and included a bit of film and a short talk. Our "correspondent" could take one or two questions the board wants asked and take notes on the others presented by boosters.

Sounds like an easier way to get this job done.

I think doing it by email is a very smart idea. Thanks Kadeezy for doing it. Considering most people have jobs and it is time consuming to get to campus, email seems like the most logical and comfortable way to do it.

If you think someone needs to really go over there to a booster meeting, it might be best to find out if they are actually doing it. If they are doing it weekly, it sounds like something for you to do Superhornet.

I would agree with that, SacRat, if I were living in Sac, or at least closer than Lodi. Given that I'm unfortunately unemployed right now, I can't afford the gas.

Boo hiss. Given other circumstances, I would jump on that in a heartbeat.

No, we don't agree. You make my point that doing it by email is far easier and manageable than having somebody with or without a job making it to weekly meetings we don't know exist.

Actually, the Coaches Luncheon was reinstituted last year at Fresh Choice on Howe and Fair Oaks. But I agree with SacRat. I think email q&a is another way for Coach Sperbeck to reach out to the fanbase...especially for someone like GCM who is in Carolina.
