1140am radio with Mike Lamb sometime between 3 and 7pm. It might be interesting to hear what he has to say about last week and how he sees the Eastern Washington game shaping up.

Maybe he going to apolige for the teams performance. There is NO excuse for lack of effort.

Anyone up for joining me in writing Mike Lamb and asking 1140 to post the audio for those interviews at http://www.sports1140.com/Grant-and-Mike/4802174. They do post that school across the causeway Coach Biggs' interviews. You can email them at [email protected].

As for an apology for lack of effort, Sperbeck doesn't owes you or us anything. But, I sure would like to see you stand before him and the players and question their effort.

Thank you Sac Rat.....The majority of the posters on this site have only watched from the sidelines (never played) and have no idea just what it takes and how much effort this team has put forth thus far. Go Hornets and Thank you Sperbeck for turning this program around.

Read this clearly #1Hornetfan and SacRat: It doesn't matter if I have and played the game or not. Sperbeck was a QB in college and to have the team come out flat in these 2 games is NO excuse on HIS part. Marshall has not turned the program around yet. Not to say he will but currently it is far from that. Put away the rose colored glasses.

I have read your five posts "clearly."

You wrote that a) "Sperbeck is not seasoned at this level," b) you assume "he (is) going to apolige (apologize) for the teams performance" c) and that traveling to SLO "is a nightmare and could effect the teams play."

If there is NO excuse for the team to come out flat because Sperbeck played QB in college, do you retract that traveling to SLO "is a nightmare and could effect the teams play?"

I agree with HHD, EWU will not be the same caliber as the last two teams we played. Another loss, and what are we suppose to do? Calling the team young is an excuse. What excuse did we have last year at Idaho State. We clearly had better talent. You only have to perform on 11 days each year. 2 are now gone. So just because EWU may not be be UNLV or CP, we are capable of laying an egg no matter who we play. Remember, it all starts at the top. I'm willing to support this staff for another week! I respect the players for all their work and effort, they are only following the leaders.
Go Hornets!!!

The team is young. Check out the roster. More experienced teams with veteran players tend to play better. Example: linebackers from last year had ton's of experience. Now provided you have excellent young players, which I believe the Hornets do, they will learn quickly and we will be very competitive.

If you don't think Sperbeck has moved this program forward, then you need to take off, not your glasses, but your blindfold.

In case you didn't hear Coach Sperbecks' radio interview, here is a synopsis of it:

They knew Cal Poly was a very good football team going in and they proved it. They're ranked 12th in the nation for a reason. He thought offensively they were similar to past teams and their D was a little different, but a team still needs to execute and they did.

He said Cal Poly took away our running game and we had to depend more on the pass and our timing isn't there yet; we need more time for that to come and the bye week is helping. He added that he thought the WR's had some good moments and the only two players he mentioned by name were Hendershott (sp?) and Willis.

He thought our D-line played well, the best of any group; CP hurt us on our perimeter and the option was hard to defend, plus the loss of Gordon fairly early didn't help. The LB's made more plays than the UNLV game.

He thinks the team needs to pay more attention to the little details in all phases; that we were sloppy in some instances and that hurt us. We have to become more efficient in our timing, footwork and techniques. He thinks we had a lot of successful plays, but we need to be more consistent in that regard, so the coaches and players look at the times they failed and seek to correct those mistakes.

He conccluded the interview, which was about ten minutes, by adding that we had a real good practice on Tuesday and that the team is getting better.

I like his attitude. He's upbeat and positive, but not over the top and he doesn't seem to get too low either. He made no prediction reference the EWU game except to say that our team is improving. It's not an easy job, to say the least.

"What excuse did we have last year at Idaho State. We clearly had better talent." I agree that Sac State should have beat Idaho State, but good grief. This is college sports and you are dealing with kids, not professionals. Why did Michigan lose to APU? Or, why did Michigan State lose to Central Michigan last weekend? Why did the more talented teams lose? It happens. And no, they don't have to only perform 11 days out of the year. They have to perform every day on the practice field and in the classroom. It is called life. You have good days and bad days. Where was all your complaining during the Moosh era?

If this is how he started the interview, it’s terrible. I mean to me, and this is my opinion only, it seems he is already making excuses right out of the gate for the teams’ lack of preparation, poor performance, and being out-coached last week. Yes cal poly is ranked, and yes they are a good team, but that’s no excuse to make a team that has all new skill position players and a QB who had virtually no playing time experience look like it’s week 10. :x

He said Cal Poly took away our running game and we had to depend more on the pass and our timing isn't there yet; we need more time for that to come and the bye week is helping. He added that he thought the WR's had some good moments and the only two players he mentioned by name were Hendershott (sp?) and Willis.

If he means falling behind by 2 TD’s as taking away the running game, then yes he is correct. I never played receiver or QB, but how long does it take to get timing down? Does anyone know, because I don’t. What were they working on since camp opened? I would think that 2 games into the season, timing would be very close, if not spot on by now. No mention of Reed? Is he going to be more utilized in the passing game? :?:

He thought our D-line played well, the best of any group; CP hurt us on our perimeter and the option was hard to defend, plus the loss of Gordon fairly early didn't help. The LB's made more plays than the UNLV game.

I agree with the first part, not so much with the last part. :|

It’s good to know that the team will be working on the fundamentals again just a few weeks after training camp.

He conccluded the interview, which was about ten minutes, by adding that we had a real good practice on Tuesday and that the team is getting better.

That’s great. What about the condition of Gordon? Who will be replacing him? Are there any other injuries that will affect the team? What about Dailey? Is he now the #3 back due to his fumble in the cal poly game? What about the QB position? Since he didn’t bring it up, does that mean Smith is still the starter? Since he talked about lack of timing, I’m assuming he is reasoning that that is why Smith is missing on a lot of passes and that he is sticking with Smith for the time being. Are you looking at the EWU game and making adjustments in the secondary? They have one of the best QB-WR combos (Nichols-Boyce) in the Big Sky, are you going to put pressure on Nichols and hope for the best? :?

I understand that Sperbeck will not want to give away any game plans for the EWU game, but these are just a few of the things that went through my mind as I read this synopsis.

It’s good he is staying positive. I know a lot of people on this board are over-reacting (me included) but we just want to see a team that is competitive every game and one that is improving. I see flashes of their competitiveness and ability but I want to see that maintained for 60 minutes every Saturday. I feel that it’s up to Sperbeck to get the most out of the players.

As much as I agree with your post, I would like to point out that most of these “kids” are getting thousands of dollars a year to perform on the field, court, track, ect. I view collegiate athletes as semi-pros. And that’s at any level.

And for the record I did a ton of complaining during the Moosh era.

I see both sides of the argument here.
There is we want to see improvement and we won't accept the team playing like they did on Saturday. Then there is the this team is young and needs time to jell theory.

I look at it like this. We have been 1AA since 1992. There are fans/alumni like me who have played for and watched this team since 1990. I'm ready to see wins. Period.

Am I tired of others disrespecting my school, my team who I played for. Yes I am, but we have to start winning games like the Cal Poly game, the Montana game and more of the Davis games to earn respect.

Like I said earlier in another post. Sperbeck is partially the blame for setting these expectations cause he made it sound like we would be very strong this year. So the first 2 losses have caused a stir because alot of people believe in him.

This team has alot of talent. I don't mind that we lost to UNLV. But I didn't like that we weren't ready to play Cal Poly. Not that we lost... We weren't ready to play. That being said.... I'm Hoping for a strong finish the next 9 games. Which would mean a good showing in the bsc.

1985 for me. Imagine the pain and suffering.

When aren't we young? Every year a class leaves so you always have a rotational replacement to step up. This is the third recruiting class, we should have depth and these players who came on board three years ago should be ready. Plus the LB's who just graduated were Moosh recruits, so he must not have done too bad a job in recruiting and didn't leave the cupboard bare.

Guess what, next year we will have new players again, are we then young again for the excuse?

We need to get better players (coaches) who can handle life better if they only have to perform 11 days out of the year. Yes they have practice and class and taxes, but if you paid top dollar to see the opera and the person singing hit off notes or ran out of breath, you wouldn't go back. It's called preparation and having the right people in the roles needed.

There was only ONE senior on offense and FOUR seniors on defense for Cal Poly. And they had a completely new coaching staff. Were they also young?

I took a minute to go through our roster, regarding the youth on our team. What I can't understand is how we have 19 Juco players and be still be young. Most D1 programs bring a couple of Juco players in to fill holes while they are developing a younger player for a spot or two. Most of the Juco players should be in their 3rd year. How many of the Jucos are starting? If not why do you bring them in? If they are starting then by definition we can't be young.

I agree, I think the "they're young" excuse has run its course.

I dont know what the problem is, the recruiting class, on paper, looked excellent as it did last year. So what's the problem? I don't understand! :?

Take your glasses off...you got to be joking! If not I'd love to know what kool-aid your drinking.

Here's another opinion, and it's only an opinion, but my concern is innovation is missing in the play calling. We're too predictable. With Sperbeck being the head coach, quarterback coach and offensive coordinator, he's got too many things going on and has been very cautious with his play calling. Who's up in the box providing information to him after each play? If you remember a couple of home games last year (Norther Colorado is one I remember), he opened things up, some misdirection, some play action, and we scored a ton of points. It's there, we have the athletes, it just has to be opened up. Maybe he's waiting for conference before he becomes more innovative and more of a risk taker....
