Not sure why folks think we'll get a coach that will be here for more than a handful of years. We want what we saw in Taylor, a capable coach that comes in and is very successful and is hired away. This is the game now, especially at the FCS level. This idea that we get a coach that will hang around for years on end isn't likely...and if it does happen, it's likely because the program is wallowing in mediocrity.
Maybe because FCS programs such as North Dakota State, South Dakota State, JMU, and both Montanas, among others, have been able to retain coaches for longer than just 2 or 3 years. And have won a multitude of championships while doing it.
Furthermore, since the endgame goal is to elevate to FBS, won’t that make it a tad more likely to keep a HC for a while longer (if/when they are FBS)?
Look, we get it. There are only a dozen or so name programs that are destination schools. And Sac State will never be among them (even at the FBS level). But neither will San Jose State, Stanford, and Cal for that matter. It is what it is.
But history proves that it is possible to keep a solid HC at the FCS level and for a winning program for more than 2 or 3 years. Look how long Jim Tressell was at Youngstown State!
Sure, different time, different era. And things have changed. But that doesn’t mean 2-3 years is undoubtedly the new norm. As I said, there are numerous upper-tier FCS programs that have managed to keep their HC’s longer than that and some of them are still there today, like Bobby Hauck at UM. If Vigen returns to MSU next season, he will be in year 5.
Figure out how to get to the FBS level soon, and that task becomes a bit easier to accomplish.
