Coaching NEWS

If the goal is FBS then you take any FBS ticket you can get. CUSA isn't as desirable as PAC or MW, but its a ticket to the dance so you take it if that is the only offer on the table this cycle. It's that simple.

Key words are this cycle. PAC is still only at 7 football members (they need at least 1 current FBS member) MW is at 8 football members with the phags likely to be the 9th at some point. 8 football members means a 7 game conference schedule leaving 5 non-conference games to be scheduled for each of its members. 9 football members would be ideal. Both of those conferences will likely add members for scheduling and content purposes (TV deal). Point being there will be slots to fill at some point for the PAC and MW.

During the next realignment cycle (in 5+ years), you aim for a move into a vacated slot in the MW (UNLV likely gets poached by PAC) or the PAC depending on how realignment at that time shakes out. Folks, you need to think a move or two down the line. Dr. Wood absolutely has to take a CUSA invite if that is all that is on the table to be taken. No brainer move.

Oly's in the BW...meh who cares, football is driving the bus and with the Kings being the prime hoops ticket in town it really doesn't matter where the Hornets awful hoops programs are parked.

Guess that is why dum-dum davis went this route?

Missouri State and Delaware are also in CUSA.

PAC and MW have been (publicly) adamant about not adding members from the FCS ranks. Since they didn't have football tethered to their Oly sports, they had the flexibility to make an Oly sports only move. Assuming we had a similar offer on the table, we don't have that luxury as an Oly sports only move puts our football home in jeopardy.

There are pros and cons to the CUSA/BW idea. A flat out "no" to the concept is shortsighted IMO.

The funds being put into this staff are significant and MUST produce results… before Taylor and Thompson our assistant staff had never been so expansive. Even if you look at the 2024 staff the amount of support staff even if some are just interns is heavy. My year on staff, Sears Era, it was myself (player turned student assistant), 2 GAs (Restricted Earnings, not really graduate assistants), and 1 DFO and recruiting coordinator was held by a position coach.

Current staff now has a GM, Director of Player Personnel, Director of Scouting, Player Personnel Assistant, and a Senior Offensive Analyst from what I’ve sifted through.

You take it if it's the only thing offered. But definitely go for the highest conference you can now, because there is no guarantee of any openings in the future.

Regardless, Sac State knows where they are going. My speculation is they have a couple of options. The CUSA rumor coming out because it's been hinted to some that there are multiple paths to FBS.

Agreed. There is also risk of passing on an invite in hand for an invite that never comes. I have no idea Dr. Wood ever had an invite in hand, but IMO we're in no position to get greedy, especially with the MW seemingly off the table (I don't see the MW needing 2 members in the same market at this time). We have no idea what is going on behind closed doors and via the back channel discussions, but at a certain point you have to make due with the tangible offers that materialize.

NIL money is contingent on getting to FBS, right? We can all connect the dots.

No way people this smart and this accomplished make mistakes like hiring for positions that may not be needed, or taking positions that set their careers backwards when they were on the rise.
We better be careful with this. As in no direct NIL offers from coaches featuring a specific amount. There are a lot of players ditching schools because promised six-figure and higher deals haven't panned out. In fact, six former FL State hoops players have sued the school AND THE COACH for essentially breach of contract because some high-figure "guarantees" (as high as $250K each) spouted by the coach and his "business partners." UNLV itself lost a QB after three games this year because of a reneged $100K NIL deal, and a Florida signee bolted for Georgia after the Gators failed to pay up on a reported $13M NIL deal.

Man, I hate this.

It is a big concern. Especially since Marion was a part of the UNLV Matt Sluka situation this year. It is probably the impetus behind Sac State hiring a general manager and assistant general manager.

All schools are on red alert regarding NIL payments and promises.

SD Hornet You are 100% correct!
Main priority is FBS and C-USA isn’t our first or second option it’s a nice introduction / FBS stepping stone.

2030 is the next big shuffle. I think it’s a 4 year move which if you think about it. Will go bye quickly as I bet it’s a 24 month project just to get our FB Stadium ready!

Promise once our stadium is built and we are already FBS that we will be a prime target,

Olympic Sports could be WCC but most likely Big West.

Are you saying this is what is happening?

Probably just speculation. We're way outside of the footprint of the CUSA that I doubt they would be interested unless they are in a pinch for membership. Their media deal is worth pennies so doubt even adding the Sacramento market would make a difference from that aspect.

Yeah, CUSA would take Tarleton before Sac. They are in the footprint, have nicer facilities and a big market.

Are they really in a big market? Dallas-Ft.Worth is roughly 90 minutes away.

Isn't that a bit of a stretch to include it in that market?

Even if it is, the area is so saturated with options that Tarleton would be far, far down the list.
