More on GVSU's Chuck Martin as described by the beat reporter from the Grand Rapids Press' Greg Johnson...
" GVSU runs a version of the spread offense (the same Brian Kelly, their one-time coach, uses at Cincinnati) with multiple receivers and a no-huddle approach with various verbal checks and audibles called primarily by the quarterback. Kelly first tried it during his 13 years at GVSU, and Martin is a former defensive coordinator under Kelly.
Martin learned the offense, and has primary play-calling duties during games. Although the qb, which has to be very cerebral in the offense, makes final selections based on the defensive reads. They often go to the last few seconds on the play clock to make sure they have it right. Martin's teams have been very balanced. He likes the running game more than Kelly, it appears, but it may be just because he has Jimmy Berezik, a junior who this weekend should become the all-time leading rusher at the school.
Martin has interviewed in the past for the Central Michigan head job (after Kelly left and when Jones was hired), the Eastern Michigan head job last year, the Northern Illinois job last time it was open and the Southern Illinois job. Those are just the ones I know about. He is a Chicago area native.
He listens, but has told me he would only go to at DI job where he though he could win and the financial offer was so good that it dramatically changed the lifestyle and future of his family.
