***Coaching Search Thread***

There was a post on the Oregon Live board that suggested Chuck Martin at Grand Valley State. He is an unbelievable 61-5 with two DII National Championships. We should go hard after him.

Now he is 69-6....

Unbelievable record.

I'd take Burton or Martin in a heartbeat. I don't know if either would actually consider the job if it was offered to him, but both seem like guys who could handle the recruiting and promotional duties that come with a program at this level.

"The importance of this hire is unmistakable," Chisholm said. "We have got to get back on track. We can't afford another three years similar to what we just went through. Otherwise, we might be beyond recovery.

70 Applicants already? I'd love to see that list.

I'd love to see this list of the other 6 or 7 people on the selection committee.

More on GVSU's Chuck Martin as described by the beat reporter from the Grand Rapids Press' Greg Johnson...

" GVSU runs a version of the spread offense (the same Brian Kelly, their one-time coach, uses at Cincinnati) with multiple receivers and a no-huddle approach with various verbal checks and audibles called primarily by the quarterback. Kelly first tried it during his 13 years at GVSU, and Martin is a former defensive coordinator under Kelly.
Martin learned the offense, and has primary play-calling duties during games. Although the qb, which has to be very cerebral in the offense, makes final selections based on the defensive reads. They often go to the last few seconds on the play clock to make sure they have it right. Martin's teams have been very balanced. He likes the running game more than Kelly, it appears, but it may be just because he has Jimmy Berezik, a junior who this weekend should become the all-time leading rusher at the school.
Martin has interviewed in the past for the Central Michigan head job (after Kelly left and when Jones was hired), the Eastern Michigan head job last year, the Northern Illinois job last time it was open and the Southern Illinois job. Those are just the ones I know about. He is a Chicago area native.
He listens, but has told me he would only go to at DI job where he though he could win and the financial offer was so good that it dramatically changed the lifestyle and future of his family.
Hope that gives you some info. Check out www.mlive.com and find the blogs list on the main page. Click on Out of Bounds. You can also find it at www.gvsulakers.com. That's my blog and has weekly stuff plus an 11-part series I did at the start of the season."

I thought you were on the selection committee.

Now I'm concerned. ;-)

How does anyone think that PSU will make this happen?

It is a standard negotiating ploy. If PSU is interested, they would enter into negotiations to determine what his bottom line is. This is second hand info so we really don't know anything.

Portland State:
Sources tell FootballCoachScoop that Athletic Director Torre Chisholm has a very short list of candidates for the Vikings football vacancy and is very
interested in talking with Al Borges (SDSU Offensive Coordinator) sometime in the near future. Also our source confirmed others that AD Torre Chisholm
is interested in are Robin Pflugrad (Former PSU player/Montana WR Coach), Keven Strasser (PSU Passing Game Coordinator/WR Coach), Mark
Speckman (Williamette Head Coach), Greg Lupfer (Cal Poly Defensive Coordinator), Stan Brock (Former Army Head Coach) Jeff Mills (Univ of Washington
Asst), Robin Ross (Oregon State Asst/Former HFC at Western Washington),Jay Locey (Oregon State Asst), and Joe Glenn (Ex-Montana Head Coach/Ex-
Wyoming Head Coach).

I'm encouraged by how active this search seems in comparison with the last one. Let's hope the results come as quickly as the rumors!

Portland State:
FootballCoachScoop has learned that Portland State Athletic Director Torre Chisholm has worked on his short list and we have moved closer to
interviewing candidates as he is set to interview from this group of coaches. Al Borges (SDSU Offensive Coordinator), Stan Brock (Former Army Head
Coach), Eric Kiesau (Former PSU Player/Colorado Offensive Coordinator), Robin Pflugrad (Former PSU player/Montana WR Coach), Kevin Strasser (PSU
Passing GAme Coordinator/WR Coach), Mark Speckman (Williamette Head Coach), Greg Lupfer (CAl Poly Defensive Coordinator), Nigel Buron (Nevada
Assistant), Jamie Hill (BYU Assistant), Robin Ross (Oregon State Asst/Former HFC at Western Washington), Jay Locey (Oregon State Asst), and Joe
Glenn (Ex-Montana Head Coach/Ex-Wyoming Head Coach).

Former PSU assistant Greg Lupfer hoping to make short list for Vikings' football job
By Jim Beseda, The Oregonian

I love that Lupfer doesn't want the PSU job as a stepping stone. That counts for something in my book.

Being a Cal Poly fan I have mixed feeling on this. I would like to see Greg stay at Cal Poly because he is a great coach and I would love to see him continue to build the defense into a power at Cal Poly. I also know he is a great guy who wants to be a head coach and I want him to get that chance. If it is not PSU, it will be somewhere else very soon. It seems like a great fit for both Greg and PSU.

No one can question the passion Lupfer has for Portland State, and yes, that does count for something. But man, if this really is the "short list," the competition for the job is extremely strong. I hope the committee makes the correct choice.

Not a chance that the committee will be carried away by the name this time. And it looks like we have some good candidates. I hope Borges is for real. He'd be taking a pay cut, I suppose, but I'd take him over Lupfer.

You would not be in this position if you had taken Lupfer three years ago.

Correct. We'd be in a very different position. Could be better, could be worse.

PSU took a chance, and it didn't work out.
