Not a chance that the committee will be carried away by the name this time. And it looks like we have some good candidates. I hope Borges is for real. He'd be taking a pay cut, I suppose, but I'd take him over Lupfer.
You would not be in this position if you had taken Lupfer three years ago.

Correct. We'd be in a very different position. Would be better.

PSU took a chance, and it didn't work out.

There I fixed it for you.

PSU went with Glanville because of his name in hopes they bring attention to the program. They did, unfortunately very few wins came with that attention.

Lupfer bleeds Viking Green and Black and he is a great coach and recruiter. I am sure that he was hired three years ago the program would have continued to win and challenge for Big Sky Championships.

It looks like there are other solid canidates that would do well at PSU and I wish you well in your search for a new head coach. Whoever it is, I hope he schedules a home and home with Cal Poly.

Chip Kelly to Portland State: "I endorse 'Speck"

Portland State is expected to officially begin the search for its next football coach on Monday. A source close to the hiring process said that candidates will begin to interview, and that the list will be kept short.

Among those expected to interview formally are Willamette University coach Mark Speckman. The Bearcats coach went 19-3 in the last two seasons at Willamette and is known around college football as a go-to guy in the offseason for programs such as Florida, Wisconsin, Ohio State, Cal, Oregon and Oregon State, among others.

Ducks coach Chip Kelly said Friday, "I endorse 'Speck. You can quote me on that. I love the guy, he knows everything about everything and I'm not just talking about football. He'd do a great job there. He's got an incredible football mind, and I think the world of him."

UPDATE: University of Portland men's basketball coach Eric Reveno read this blog entry and checked in. Speckman apparently talked to Reveno's 4-0 men's basketball team and gave a speech about selling out and giving it your all. Said Reveno of Speckman: "He's the best. It's none of my business who they hire, what do I know, but he's an amazing coach."

Portland State search enters interview phase

Willamette coach Mark Speckman is scheduled to interview Monday at Portland State for the job as head football coach, sources familiar with the search said Friday.

Other candidates who are believed to have made the short list and are expected to interview next week include San Diego State offensive coordinator Al Borges, former Army coach Stan Brock, Nevada defensive coordinator Nigel Burton, and Cal Poly defensive coordinator Greg Lupfer.

Speckman, 54, has a 71-50 record in 12 seasons at Willamette, finishing the 2009 season with an 8-2 overall record and 5-1 in the Northwest Conference.

A two-time NWC coach of the year, Speckman led the Bearcats to NCAA Division III playoffs berths in 1999, 2004 and 2008, and got an endorsement from Oregon coach Chip Kelly on Friday.

"I endorse 'Speck. You can quote me on that,” Kelly told The Oregonian’s John Canzano. “I love the guy, he knows everything about everything and I'm not just talking about football. He'd do a great job there. He's got an incredible football mind, and I think the world of him."

My son was recruited by Coach Glanville and was also being recruited by many other teams. He choise Portland State becauce of Coach Glanville. He worked his butt off for the team. The first season he played on special teams an d then earned a spot as a starter in his sophmore year. I want to thank to thank all the coaches for the guidence thay gave my son. Thank you.

Interesting how Kelly is endorsing Speckman yet wouldn't hire him as an assistant coach.

I am disappointed that Speckman made it to the interview stage over other more compelling candidates.

So this is for real? I thought this was a joke by Canzano since he is endorsing the guy. Since when are elite FBS teams consulting Willamette University's coach? I've never heard anything about that.

I want someone with DI experience. If all these people on the short list want the job, please hire one of the DI guys. It's easy to endorse someone for programs that are not your own. For Chip Kelly, FCS, D-II, D-III are probably all the same.

Don't think they'll lose their scholarships à la Glanville. It was really frustrating to see the struggles of the receiving corps during his tenure when he dismissed 3 guys who could have been all conference caliber guys. I hope guys who've said they'd leave will reconsider once they see who is selected. I'd also like to see what happens in Texas. Obviously Lupfer doesn't make it a priority, but we've seen some decent safeties in the last few classes...

Portland State:

Sources close to the situation tell FootballCoachScoop that Athletic Director Torre Chisholm has moved two candidates to the top of the list and have
become the focus of the search. These two candidates are Al Borges (SDSU Offensive Coordinator) and Mark Speckman (Williamette Head Coach).
FootballCoachScoop was the first to report (November 23) that Mark Speckman would interview first, which will occur on Monday Morning, according to our
source.

College Football Coaching Carousel Update

http://www.neworleans.com/sports/local-sports-news/college-football-news/272399-college-football-coaching-carousel-update.html

Portland State - Division III Willamette head coach Mark Speckman, San Diego State offensive coordinator Al Borges and former Army head coach and New Orleans Saints tackle Stan Brock are the 3 finalists for the head coaching job here. The new head man will succeed former NFL head coach Jerry Glanville. Speckman has built a respected D3 power in the Oregon university, Borges has directed offenses with great success along the west coast, and Brock is a native of Portland, Oregon and coached a local Arena franchise, the Portland Forest Dragons, a decade ago before a short stint as the head coach at West Point.

Looks like we may have a coach named next week.

Portland State: Our sources tell us that both Al Borges and Mark Speckman interviewed extremely well. We are hearing that Portland State will also be interviewing a minority candidate within the next few days.

If these are the final three choices, I'll take Borges. Brock seems like a worst case scenario if you ask me.

So... pick the next Portland State football coach

http://www.oregonlive.com/sports/oregonian/john_canzano/index.ssf/2009/12/post_1.html

Portland State will likely announce it's next football head coach sometime next week. Interviews going down all this week on campus in Portland. And you all know who I think PSU should hire --- and I'd do it in a heartbeat --- but here is the run-down from sources close to the hiring process on where the candidates may currently stand.

Al Borges (San Diego State offensive coordinator): If we're going on resumes alone, the 54-
Al Borges has a strong resume.year old Borges is tough to beat. He's run the offenses at Auburn, Indiana, Cal, UCLA, Oregon, Boise State, and Portland State. He's a strong tie to PSU's successful past, but the big question is whether or not Borges can recapture the magic Pokey Allen had when the Vikings were competing at Division II. He's had resources at his more recent stops and his success-to-fail ratio is so-so. San Diego State went 4-8. A source on the hiring committee said that Borges brought his wife, Nikki, who is from Oregon, into the interview. Smart gamble. He also spent time in the interview talking about this being his dream job, and perhaps, final job. Several current football players at PSU expressed concerns over Borges being less energetic than some of the other candidates. Borges would be a safe hire for PSU, but is safe what the Vikings need?

Insider Odds to get the job: 3 to 1.

Former OSU assistant is getting a strong internal push.Nigel Burton (Nevada defensive coordinator): With Mark Banker running the defense in Corvallis there was no upward mobility available to Burton when he was at Oregon State as a position coach and assistant. So Burton left for Nevada to run the Wolfpack defense. He played at Washington, and coached at PSU (defensive backs and special teams in 2001-02). Insiders say Burton is getting a serious push internally from Rashad Floyd, a Burton friend and former Arena Football League player who graduated from PSU in 2001. Floyd is charged with being the "football voice" of the hiring committee. OSU coach Mike Riley gave Burton a positive recommendation this week. Nevada went 8-4 this season --- very respectable --- but Burton's defense gave up 28 or more points 15 times in two seasons. Some obvious questions there, and you have to wonder if PSU can afford to go with another defensive-minded coach in the wake of Jerry Glanville.

Insider Odds to get the job: 5 to 1.

Willamette coach was the subject of USA Today feature story.Mark Speckman (Willamette University coach): Speckman interviewed on Monday, toured the Portland State campus and conducted what one person on the interview committee called, "a seminar on the Fly offense." He's a terrific candidate, and has won everywhere he's coached. The 54-year old has an endorsement from Ducks coach Chip Kelly, who tried to hire Speckman as his quarterbacks coach last summer, and Oregon State coach Mike Riley, who called PSU on the eve of the Civil War as well to give a recommendation on Speckman. Both OSU and Oregon ran Speckman's "fly sweep" on Thursday night during the Civil War. Speckman has energy, fresh ideas, and would bring added national exposure to the program by virtue of his disability (he was born without hands). He's be a fascinating hire, and he's an offensive-minded coach who has put up big numbers. The big question here is whether PSU has the confidence in itself to set ego aside, look in the backyard and hire a Division III coach who runs an offense the football-light hiring committee likely doesn't understand.

Insider Odds to get the job: 8 to 1.

Greg Lupfer is an assistant for Tim Walsh at Cal Poly.Greg Lupfer (Cal Poly defensive coordinator): Lupfer is a former Tim Walsh assistant who was considered for the job when Jerry Glanville got it. He is still getting a nice push from recruits and there's a Facebook page dedicated to "Hire Greg Lupfer" even now. Lupfer, 39, played linebacker at PSU from 1991-93 and spent 12 seasons as a Vikings' assistant. One current PSU player said, "He's exactly the kind of young, energetic coach we need." Players want him. He knows the landscape, but I'm not sure the Viks are looking for a defensive-minded coach, and I'm not sure the Walsh era was sexy enough for the hiring committee. Lupfer interviewed on Thursday, and it went well. He has a ringing endorsement from Walsh, who carries some juice still on campus, but it feels like the timing may not be right this time as well.

Insider Odds to get the job: 10 to 1

Stan Brock (former Army head coach): Brock was born in Portland, and knows the
Stan Brock played high school ball at Jesuit.challenges at PSU. The 51-year old coach was let go after going 6-18 in two seasons at Army. Insider on the search process said that Brock wasn't prepared as well as the other candidates for his interview. Too bad, because on paper he just doesn't stack up to the possibilities. You figure he had to win this job in an interview phase, not on paper. Offensively, Army was a disaster under Brock, who went to the "Brock Bone" in year two and basically handed the ball to the fullback. He was a great player, and a Hall of Famer in the state, but he has to be a looooooong shot in this process given the circumstances. This pool is too deep for Brock to walk off with the job.

Insider Odds to get the job: 15 to 1.

So who do you hire?

So after seeing the fly sweep be so successful in the Civil War game is anyone else thinking that it might just be something worth going out on a limb for? Cause I sure was impressed by both teams using it and gaining huge chunks of yards. I really think coach Speckman is the guy who can bring us back to the forefront of the Big Sky. I hope the powers that be give him a shot. I don't think much of Al Borges he doesn't seem very sincere and doesn't seem to have the tools necessary to dig us out of the hole we are in. I liken him to Glanville, He is a name coach with a fine resume at many big time places yet he does not have the skills needed to manage an entire program. I am excited for the Viking players if they end up hiring Speckman they will absolutely love the guy and it will bring positivity and cohesion to their team. Hope you all enjoyed the Civil War I for one took the day off today.
