***Coaching Search Thread***

I don't think that it is a bad hire at all. He has ties to the program, a good recruiter, younger coach that may be able to get more out of his players which is a hallmark of any Mike Reilly coached team.

It may take a year to get the players to fully adapt to a new offensive and defensive schemes, but PSU has a young team with a lot talent so it shouldn't take too long to get back on track.

So has anyone seen or read any actual comments from Burton? I'd love to know how the press conference turned out.

Video of the press conference:

Radio interview from 95.5 fm:

New head football coach at Portland State Nigel Burton comes on to talk about his new team and position.

Pretty good press conference. Burton talks easy and straightforward, the opposite of Glanville. People will like him. An honest guy. He did say two important things: he plans to run Ault's pistol offense, and he's going to use 4-3 defense. The pistol often uses 3 WRs, and we certainly have them. BUT it works especially well with a QB who can run and pass. Remains to be seen if we have one of those. Nevada has used it to great effect but plenty other schools use it. Don't know if any of the other BSC teams use it. I suspect that most of our defensive players who have struggled with the 3-4 will be happy to go back to the 4-3, which they likely used in high school. He also hinted that he's going to try to get assistant coaches from OSU and Nevada. Good luck - they'd probably have to take a salary cut. Or has the administration promised more money?

All in all, a promising start. I can relax.

If I'm not mistaken, the pistol produced three 1,000-yard rushers at Nevada this year (including the QB), so it should be exciting.

Frustrating though. We begin to run this offense the year after Bobby McClintock graduates. He would been perfect for this offense.

Good news though? Count on Connor starting at QB next season. He is perfect for the system.

He is probably looking at young position coaches at OSU and Nevada for coordinator positions and grad assistants as position coaches at Portland State. Money might not be better at PSU, but it is a step up in position.

Nick Green may be in the fold as well. Since it's a new offense, I would assume that knowledge wise, all QBs are even...

McClintock will probably get another year of eligibility from the NCAA. As for QBs, I think we have a lot of good options between Green, CK, and even Howland if he can get healthy and regain eligibility. Didn't JG recruit a dual threat guy recently?

Is Burton coaching in Nevada's bowl game or leaving immediately to focus on PSU? I'm guessing it is the latter, but wasn't sure.

Te Shon Burton gave a verbal, however, with the coaching change it's probably up in the air.

RE when does Burton take over as coach, the Reno Gazette reported yesterday that other Nevada coaches (Wilson for DC) have been switched to cover his job. Sounds like he starts right away.

Everyone be sure to watch Nevada play SMU in the Hawaii Bowl. Colin Kaepernick runs the pistol offense better then anyone ever has.

It will be nice to have a halfback or tailback again, especially with the rushing yards we piled up under Walsh. I wouldn't be surprised to see McCaffery move back to that position, if he does I'll be curious to see what he can do.
