Coaching Update

Watch for some big changes this week. Inside sources saying the school can not afford to get rid of Collins however Dunn is forcing changes within the staff. Norton left the university in horrible shape financially. They can not afford to make any major moves ANYWHERE across campus. With that being said, there are some major staff changes coming.

Here you go Brian

Dear UNC Football Community,

If you are a football fan like I am, you know that we have entered that time of year when the success of football programs across the nation are being evaluated. Bears Football won two games this season, so it should come as no surprise that some people are speculating about the future of UNC Head Football Coach Earnest Collins.

I want you to know that Coach Collins will return next year as UNC’s head football coach. Athletic Director Darren Dunn and I have had numerous conversations with Coach Collins and others, and going forward, it will not be business as usual.

No one denies that Coach Collins and the Bears had a tough season on the field. We’re all disappointed in the results this year. But that’s not the only thing we’re reviewing. The academic success of the student-athletes who play UNC football has risen steadily over the past five years. Twelve players on this year’s roster had completed their bachelor’s degree early and started a second degree, the most at any school in the FCS. The student-athletes who play for the Bears are leaders and doers. What happens off the field is core to what we do at UNC, and Coach Collins knows this well.

I believe our successes are due in large part to Coach Collins’ commitment to his players. He shares our values as a university that is committed to developing each student’s individual potential. He promotes courage and self-reliance, both on and off the field, and insists that this be combined with scholarship. He understands that most young men he coaches must graduate from UNC prepared to succeed in something after football.

Coach Collins understands that UNC football is about more than what happens on the field. It also offers students the training and discipline that leads to lifelong success. We saw this when Coach Collins suspended 12 key players for the Northern Arizona game. At a time when he desperately needed a win, he was unwilling to bend his principles. What an example for our students.

I hope next season to see a new winning tradition emerging on the field for our UNC Bears. But I will remain then, as now, interested in the total body of work.

Sincerely,

Andy Feinstein
President

That explains the puff articles on Greeley Trib today about Dunn. Plus other articles lately. I guess UNC is under the impression that it would not be possible to hire a college coach that could motivate students and have winning football teams. Just recruit smart kids and your job is secure.

This makes me sick to my stomach. Why even have a football team? What can they possibly do to shake things up? They could do what the Washington Capitals did and bring in an assistant coach that was going to take over the head coaching duties when the HC's contract was up (they actually won the Stanley Cup with that cloud above the HC's head). Probably not the best idea. It must be in the contract that Collins remain the HC not just a coach.
Crap crap crap.

He is 26-62 over 8 years.
His highest win total in a season was 6 and he only did that twice.
Defense has never been stellar. Those 6 wins season were marred with boat race games.
Big Sky is only going to get tougher.
The conference sent four teams to the FCS playoffs this year.
Honestly, no one cares about academics if you're not performing on the field. I hate to say it, but that's true.
I will still sit on the windswept High Plains and cheer from afar but unless they're going to dump a lot of money into the program I don't see this working.
Even if they do put money into it, I don't see this working well.
Man, I hope I eat crow next year and we end up with a winning record.

Why not shut the football program down and just give the money for academic scholarships if that's all we care about? Good god this is the worst. This is why you never hire alumni as a coach, you just can't get rid of them. Whatever.

I love the trib article where it's "coach collins is just going to change everything and that will work"

That's a good point. What is he going to change? Honestly, he does need to change his recruiting philosophy. We've always been able to bring in great skill position guys, but the linemen are D2 level at best. They need to put the emphasis on finding better offensive and defensive linemen.

If there is major staff changes, the first to go must be Wikre. We had the worst offensive line in college football (literally). He has been on staff for some thing like 5 years. He needs to be the first out the door.

On Twitter, Troy mentions a big coaching change as well (after I called him out a bit on the excuses the media around the program seem to be making). I really can't believe that we don't have a journalist that really goes into the football program. Even if they like CC, they should get into the finances to let us know why we are in such dire straits.

My thought is BFD on any coaching changes that isn't collins. We aren't a new assistant coach or coordinator away from being a winning program. Unless they do all the recruiting and coaching for collins lol.

Northern Colorado (FCS): Sources tell FootballScoop offensive coordinator Jon Boyer has been let go.

That's too bad. I think Boyer is a good OC. I liked his play calling. Again, the first one gone should have been Wikre. It has got to be tough being a coach, especially around this time year. He has a wife and young kids, I hope he lands on his feet somewhere.

I always thought we scored enough points to win a game, but gave up a ton of points on defense. Our offensive line was non existent and our defensive backs gave up too many long play gains. We just need a new direction of the program and now that seems to be out of the question. Lets hope by some strange happening that things do get better and we are not back here again next year repeating the same old outcomes of the past.

Mustari is reporting that Boyer is indeed out, and a likely replacement is Bob Stitt (Former Mines and Montana Griz head coach). The Stitt part is just a rumor, and I'm hoping it turns out false. I have never liked his offensive style. It's too gimmicky. Plus, his ego is too big for an assistant's job.

If its not a rumor, I would welcome Stitt with open arms . I like his quick style approach and lets face it , he has been a lot more successful than anyone weve had lately . And obviously bigger programs than us seem to like him
