The Glendale Community College Gauchos football teamed opened the 2011 season on Saturday night with a 37-7 victory over Green River Prep from Washington.
Defensively, GCC was strong all night, allowing just 35 yards of rushing in the game. The defense was led by DE Marshall Peugh (Ironwood) and DB Matt Corven (Deer Valley), who each had 2 sacks. DBs Brendan Murphy (Chaparral) and Dallas Nichols (Central) each had interceptions.

I like the singing of the o-linemen. Also, I heard we hired two more full-time assistants. I'm hoping one of them will be an o-line coach.

I think we are set at LB for the next few years.
Sleeper of the week
This week's under-the-radar prospect that won't be unknown for long:
RB Marcus Forward, LB, Flint (Mich.) Northern
The Midwest, and particularly the state of Michigan, is saturated with good linebackers in the 2012 class, and that has hurt some prospects that would likely have picked up more offers in normal years. With the depth at the position, however, most college programs in the region addressed their linebacker needs early in the process, leaving several very talented prospects with few options.
Flint (Mich.) Northern linebacker Marcus Forward is one of those prospects who likely would have had more offers in a year that was not as blessed with linebacker talent. The 6-2, 215-pound Forward changed his body dramatically in the off-season, and was one of the most well put-together linebackers in the state of Michigan by the end of the summer. Forward is a good athlete with good speed, but he will always be known first and foremost as a big hitter. He has the instincts to play middle linebacker and the intelligence (3.67 GPA) to make the calls for the defense.
Forward does hold a couple MAC offers, but his offer numbers do not appear to match his abilities. The problem he faces is that there are a lot of linebackers just like him in the Midwest and only so many scholarships to give out. BCS level schools have shown some interest, and it would not surprise to see one or two make a later offer. He's talented enough to play at that level.

• Marcus Forward: Football (University of Northern Colorado)
The Flint Carman-Ainsworth product stands 6'4, 290-lbs, and after some recent camp performances, is beginning to hear from more and more schools.
"I talked to Michigan State, Morgan State, Toledo, Cincinnati, and Bowling Green. I talked to Western Michigan recently too."
Overton has been on two visits, but hopes to see more campuses this summer.
"I visited Hampton and Bowie State and that's about it," he said.
