Common Denominator?

just off the top of my head...may not be completely statistical here, but.....

Josh Hays, DL.....Jared Allen, Jeff Charleston, Jermaine Horn

Isaac Mitchell, Merrill Hoge, RB....i agree Merrill was best, but recently:Josh Barnett, Alfredo Anderson

Trevor Bell, Brent Koetter, Safety/DB......Marcus Jackson, Terrance Calloway, David Beverly, Quinton
Freeman

I know it wasn't 5 more for each position, but this was just off the top of my head.

Many other positions are dominated by out of staters. You only gave names for 3 positions. How about QB, Return specialist, Wide recievers, Kickers/punters, O-line???? what are the dominating Idaho kids in those positions?

i need to say AGAIN...........recruit Idaho, but realize most our talent will be from out of state.

notice i said "most" our talent.

Keep kicking the dead horse???????????

I don't disagree

But I do disagree with your statement that you can name five out of staters better than any instater.

give me a minute...and i will be able to do it. We have only talked about 3 positions. all the other positions will be MUCH easier!!

can we stay within the last 10 years. i mean that is where it pertains to us right. talking about 20 or more years ago is like apples to oranges.

What about guys like shane griggs, taysom hill (granted he went elsewhere, but talent wise pretty amazing), and jd folsom from salmon got drafted this past year outta weber?

Fundamentally I agree with both sides. On average, you don't find the gamebreaker guys for this level in idaho. But you can find a solid group of average role guys that provide a base. Then by bringing in a couple outta state gamebreakers (ala j allen, barnett, ET, etc) the team goes from being good to championship caliber (ala montana). The role players are all around idaho. Guys like the mennear brothers, winn, those listed before, etc. Getting role guys from outta state seems like a waste to me though. That's a long way to go to be a role player. Its easier if you go that far to be the man. Plus, having a good group of in state guys gives you an atmosphere and culture that makes the outta state guys feel at home and less likely to bail. Things like knowing where to fish, camp, go to the lake, where to party safely. But both sides of the issue are essential. They must coexist.

I heard at work today that Kelvin Krosch's younger brother, Kole has commited to play at Montana State. That is really too bad that ISU couldn't get him. According to newspaper and TV sounds like he is the type of local athlete ISU could use.

recruit Idaho...of course, BUT.....

here is a short list of Talent that would NEVER come from Idaho:

Alfredo Anderson
Jared Allen
Case Debruen
Marcus Jackson
EVERY KICKER & PUNTER WE EVER HAD
Kenyon Bleu
Eddie Thompson
Doug Baughman
Pago Tugafou (spelling)?

You must not remember Ben Simpson, a punter from Pocatello. He was damn good.

How many Montana kids on any football team in Idaho, are there any. Thus the reason Montana teams have so many locals on them. Going to school in Utah is not an option to a Montana kid, they go to one of the schools in state. If they don't feel they are good enough for Montana or MSU, they go to Carrol or Montana Western. They are loyal to the state, Idaho kids, let's face it, they don't seem to have that kind of loyalty. Montana's recruiting class is not all Montana kids every year, they get allot of walkons. ISU is not going to get the best in the state because Boise does, Idaho will pick up a couple and we get the ones they did not recruit. Montana and MSU split that group with a kid every couple of years going to a ASU, but for the most part the best in the state go to these schools. If you get the best from your state for year after year eventually you will have a team made up of mostly local kids, but you cannot do it with the kids no one else recruited. By the way it has always been that way in Montana, even during the down times. Montana kids stay home to play football.

Blackfoot...I think most of the problem is ISU does not do a very good job recruiting Idaho....They wait too long to go after the top Idaho athletes or just by pass them. I had heard earlier in the year that they had by passed Kole Krosch. I really believe Most Idaho players would rather stay in Idaho if they have the opportunity. Example Goody...Josh Hill. You can't blame a player for leaving the state if an out of state school offers a full ride and ISU doesn't. Blackfoot...do you know if ISU is looking at any players on the Blacfoot High School team? They are a very good team this year, surely there is one or two players ISU should at least be talking to.

You speak about recruiting as if every staff had the same criteria. Unlike you, I have no idea what is was or is now. My argument is; Idaho kids are not a loyal as Montana kids. Being like Montana seems to be what you and every other person I have had this debate with wants. Plain and simple, a Montana kid would not accept a scholorship at ISU, Weber, or NAU, they would walkon at Montana, MSU, or go to Carrol or Montana Western before considering an out of state school. Idaho kids go out of state willingly, accepting offers over local schools all the time. I have never made the claim this is good or bad, but if every kid who has accepted a scholorship out of state had walked on at ISU we would be just like Montana. That is how Montana has gotten where they are, having so many Montana kids on the roster. I know for a fact Laporta was to visit ISU and cancelled for his own reasons. Maybe he should have taken it into consideration that this was the staffs year recruiting at ISU and there was some confusion. I also know that Zamberlin was in close contact with an kid for most of last year, a kid who committed to Zamberlin, then went to Weber. Boy that showed class, loyalty only seems to be a one way street with Idaho kids. I don't always feel we make a good effort in recruiting local, but then again I don't always know the whole story. Does the kid have grade issues, what are our needs, will this kid fit in, what does the coach see in this kid. The kid at Highland who committed to Weber last year may or may not have been recruited by us, maybe this had something to do with Orthman leaving, again I don't know. What I do know, just from what goes on in Montana, no Montana kid would have done what he did. They would have walked on at one of the in state schools before accepting a scholorship from an out of state school. By the way, Montana schools only have to compete among themselves for the kids in Montana, everyone knows you would be wasting your time recruiting there. To be frank; I believe the staffs at ISU recognize the need to go after local kids. I also recognize that the in state kids make the final choice on where they go, not ISU.

Just for the record, that thread was only locked because the same topic jumped into another thread. Not saying that I didn't want the topic to die down a bit--but that was the reason.

Just saying for clarification.

ISU expects Idaho kids to walk on, period. Been there done that.

so does BSU..if i had to choose which to walk on at the choice would be simple! ...i mean even if we just paid for their books that would at least be something. all a guy wants to be able to say coming out of high school is that he's on scholly. having to be a walk on is perceived as lower class in a lot of regards.

Yes but even if you "just pay books", and then they leave it's an APR hit...don't forget about that little piece of the equation. Straight walk-ons with no money don't count ... APR is a tricky little wrench in some of this stuff...

I watched the Blackfoot/Sandpoint game last night and saw five kids who deserve a look. Last time Blackfoot won 4A state Zamberlin and staff blew the big one and did not step up. Here's another chance.

QB Clark: Word on the street is Zamberlin wants to go spead with a duel threat QB. Normally I would see Clark as a Slot Reciever, but if you want a QB who can run and throw, heres you guy. Small, about 5-8, but in a spread rolling out, asked Utah State, you don't have to be 6-2. I hope Zamberlin recognizes a spread offense requires at least 7 wideouts who all think just like the QB and run the correct routes. It also takes about two years to implement, quit the QB shuffle and let anyone coming in learn at thier own speed.

TE : I can't think of his name right now. Big kid who is not a wideout tightend, he plays on the line most the time and blocks. 6-2 to 3 about 225. Runs good routes and has good hands. Remember three of our four TE's are local and walkons. Why spend money you don't have to bring in a kid who is probley not as good.

WR Flores: Looks and runs like a small tightend, dominates small CB's and understands catching the ball at it's highest point. Athletic enough to have played CB at 6-2 200 lbs.

DE/LB: Good size and will get bigger, will most like grow into a DE in college. Been successful every year and every position he has played. Good athlete who knows how to compete.

RB Percy: Tough runner who if he reminds me of Whitworth as a RB. Hits the hole hard and never goes down on first hit. Is not a great speedster but always gives a 100 percent and plays hard. Does what it takes to get job done.
