PSU loses QB, fullback for season

Portland State has lost sophomore quarterback Tygue Howland and sophomore fullback Bobby McClintock, both of whom are starters, to season-ending injuries suffered in Saturday's season-opening 35-12 loss to McNeese State in Lake Charles, La.

Tests on Tuesday morning revealed injuries that will require surgery -- Howland to repair a torn ligament in his left foot, and McClintock to repair a torn anterior cruciate ligament in his right knee.

Senior quarterback Brian White and senior fullback Olaniyi Sobomehin are both expected to start for the Vikings (0-1) in Saturday's home opener against UC-Davis (0-1) at PGE Park.

Drew Hubel, a freshman from Corvallis, is next in line at quarterback, while the backup fullback position will most likely fall to one of two converted linebackers -- junior Ronnie Fa'avae or redshirt freshman Dallas Smith. Grant Schuberg, another freshman from Portland's Grant High School, also plays fullback, but the Vikings would like to hold him out and preserve his redshirt status.

"I'm disappointed to lose two players of Tygue and Bobby's caliber, but that's the game," Vikings coach Jerry Glanville said. "It's a cruel, mean game. That's the way it goes in football." ?

Bobby's loss seems like a huge blow. I'm gonna pray for a Brian White-esque mid-season transfer to fill his spot. I know there's no chance of this happening, but it never hurts to dream...

Sorry to hear about the injuries. I know the Aztecs were devastated last season by injuries; hate to see it happen to anyone. Good luck this week and look forward to seeing the new PSU unis in SD.

After watching Hawaii play this weekend I wish we went with their style, they use true RBs at the RB position instead of big FBs. Their two new RBs looked incredible out there and made the offense far more potent. If we could get one of those 6-2 220 LB RBs with 4.4 speed we would keep everyone on their heels.

I have a curiousity question that results from ignorance; maybe someone here can educate me.

I am surprised that PSU has a fullback at all, let alone one who is/was apparently the primary back, given that PSU is now running Davis' run 'n shoot offense.

When I think fullback, I think ball control offense, 4 yards and a cloud of dust-type offense, not the run 'n shoot. When I think run 'n shoot, I think of an offense that is quick and fast at the skill positions and and an offense that emphasizes throwing the ball, with the run game being secondary and being used primarily to keep the defense honest.

As a result of these perceptions of mine, I'm surprised a fullback was even on the field, let alone the primary running back for this offense. In addition, I learned yesterday on another thread that Ali is no longer with the team when I would have thought someone with his talent would have been more likely to fit into the run 'n shoot than would a fullback-type back.

While I'm at it, I have another question, too? I had heard/read that White seemed to be the solid #1 going into the season, yet I see he was the #2 going into the McNeese State game and it sounds like he ended up playing alternate quarters until injury forced him into playing full time. My question is: Did White lose the job in fall camp or did Howland play so well the he took it? Again, just curious.

Can anyone help me out here?

The fullback in the R&S is almost like a 6th lineman. His primary purpose is to block any pass rushers who do not get caught by the lineman. If there's no rushers to block, the fullback will release into a passing pattern. As per Glanville prior to the season, the PSU offense will be 80-90% pass, with a few runs here and there. A "typical" running back is too small to effectively block pass rushers.

White was the #1 going into camp, but Howland got a grip on the offense earlier, and had a better understanding of what Mouse wanted to do. Because of that, it was a toss-up as to which QB was better. They were probably close to being equal overall, but now that Howland is out for the year, White will be the starter.

You had to see the Hawaii offense with Reagan Mauia and Nate Ilaoa last year. It works with extra QB protection plus hard to bring down on draws and screens after you've spread out the defense.

Thing is, I'd say Ilaoa was actually quick. I obviously didn't get a look at McClintock. It doesn't hurt to have a bowling ball with speed, but I'm not sure Portland State has someone like that in the offense. Of course, Mauia was converted from NOSE TACKLE, so you'd think Davis and Glanville could think a bit out of the box.

Hope both Howland and McKlintock are able to get healthy for next year, it will be a long and agonizing wait for them.

Now is B-Whites chance to shine, I do not think he will disappoint starting with this saturday at PGE versus Davis.

I've had similar questions. Thank you for phrasing them in such an articulate manner.

As for Ali, I get that he's not big enough to block effectively, but I refuse to believe that PSU is better off without him. Good coaches find a way to use good players.

I think White will play well this year.

Question for those that played college ball:

Does the lack of having a starter named add pressure that normally wouldn't be there for QBs? I would think it's a yes. You seem to get the politically correct answer from players when they are asked about a QB battle for the starting position: "They push each other to make themselves better."

I think you get a situation where in the back of the minds of the two QBs they are thinking that if they don't throw this pass perfect, they will be delegated to the backup, and they try to make too perfect of a play/pass and end up with an overthrow/underthrow or a bad decision.

With a starter set the QB can get relax and get in a groove.

Am I way off base with this thinking?

I think you're right but the QBs in all football seem to think they're special. All other positions are platooned.

Having said that, White now has the team. This is his senior year and why he transferred here. He'll get the snaps in practise. This is his big chance.

I'm very confident in White - have been ever since the Montana game last year. Hopefully Hubel doesn't have to play much. The FB position and the defense are my bigger concerns.
