Portland State has lost sophomore quarterback Tygue Howland and sophomore fullback Bobby McClintock, both of whom are starters, to season-ending injuries suffered in Saturday's season-opening 35-12 loss to McNeese State in Lake Charles, La.
Tests on Tuesday morning revealed injuries that will require surgery -- Howland to repair a torn ligament in his left foot, and McClintock to repair a torn anterior cruciate ligament in his right knee.
Senior quarterback Brian White and senior fullback Olaniyi Sobomehin are both expected to start for the Vikings (0-1) in Saturday's home opener against UC-Davis (0-1) at PGE Park.
Drew Hubel, a freshman from Corvallis, is next in line at quarterback, while the backup fullback position will most likely fall to one of two converted linebackers -- junior Ronnie Fa'avae or redshirt freshman Dallas Smith. Grant Schuberg, another freshman from Portland's Grant High School, also plays fullback, but the Vikings would like to hold him out and preserve his redshirt status.
"I'm disappointed to lose two players of Tygue and Bobby's caliber, but that's the game," Vikings coach Jerry Glanville said. "It's a cruel, mean game. That's the way it goes in football." ?
