Contract length FYI

The original contract signed with HC Mental is for 4 yrs. per a reliable source.
(FYI...if anyone disputes that feel free to provide any contrary evidence.)

It's doubtful that WSU's admin would buyout 2 yrs. salary, but that's just my opinion.🤨

I agree with you. Any coach deserves at least three years to get his guys in place and developed into what they want. Mental will be on the hot seat next year. This team is a few key defensive players away from returning to what we want to see. I don't know that they will get them or develop them over the next year, but that is what I see as the key.

Our offense returns everybody and should be better next year. Defense is where it is at.

Olds, I just don't understand why you come across as such a Mickey fan. Normally I would agree that a coach should get three years but in this case he took a perennial playoff team and has driven this program squarely into the ground. Honestly, what improvements have you seen? He shouldn't have had to "get his guys in place" as you say because he was handed the keys to a very strong program and turned it into a damn dumpster fire. There will be a mass exodus of players, coaches, and yes even fringe fans. Is this what you have come to deem as acceptable because I sure as hell don't think it is. FIRE Mental and Crompton as they are both completely inept. We as WSU fans who pay our money and support this program deserve a much better product.

I think you are reading things I didn't say.

Correct Coach Mental's contract is a four year deal (up January 2027). He is supposed to be paid $215K per year. I'm sure there are other aspects of his contract like an added bonus if he is still in his position on July 1, along with other bonuses (conference championships, playoff appearances, etc). His contract is guaranteed unless fired with cause.

Yes, Tim can fire him after this season. Yet, the athletics program would be on the hook to pay him $430K. However, what is the definition, in the state of Utah, for "firing with cause?" I'm sure the university can make a legal argument as to why they would need to let him go, but it would be a stretch.

Yet, Weber athletics or the university isn't as poor as everyone thinks. No we aren't rich like the U or Y, and have to be wise with our money, but there is cash on hand to make moves if needed. Also, the university has some very deep pocketed alumni and boosters. If they want him gone and are willing to foot some or all of the bill, it will happen. Coach Crompton is a realist and will approach this pragmatically. He knows that it could come down to it being either Mental or his job. I don't think that is the case, but...

Another factor is the health of the department overall. How are other coaches doing? Yes, volleyball should get an extension and raise, but Tim doesn't have to worry about other sports (yes, Duft might be done after this season, but his contract was a 3 year deal with the option for a 4th, without an extension). There are monies available, to pay off Mental and to hire a new HC for football. Would we want to do that? NO...but. What am I hoping to see...Mental get a position at another school as a position coach or OC. This is resigning on his own terms.

Good info...I've been around long enough to experience back in the '70s when the Wildcat Club put pressure on WSC's president to remove the AD for not getting rid of a HC (was losing most games). Whether the club's power was stronger then or just the majority pressure got the AD reassigned and a new coach hired (but may not have required a buyout). Clout has power but now day's money rules, but!

Maybe we could do some car washes and bake sales to help raise some buyout money. As everyone one on this forum knows, I about had my fill in the Northern Colorado game…I almost would have pulled what the Navy AD did when he followed the team into the locker room and fired the coach after they blew a should have won game vs Army (I’m not that heartless). I tried to settle down but watching a player line up offside on a FG vs Idaho State is the clincher. This team gets more undisciplined as the season goes on.

I’ll put up the first two dozen chocolate chip cookies.😂. Honestly though, I am boggled Mental got four years while Duft got three.

You make a great point. I’m hoping Mental moves on and finds a team to be a coordinator or lower division team to coach. He isn’t cutting the mustard in the Big Sky.

I expect the white helmet with shield logo and purple raven jerseys for the last home vs Cal Poly. 😂

I understand you guys saying give him 3 years to get his guys but he has been here three years and the offense has gotten worse every year he has been here. I get that he wasn't the head coach the first year but he was the offensive coordinator so to me he should have his guys on offense and he does the problem is they are not producing and Munoz is regressing as a qb sorry but that is a fact. I keep hearing we are young but I don't see any improvement from the team since the start of the season until now they are getting worse. If Weber has the money they should let Mental go you can't afford to waste another season not in this era of college sports it will kill the program. I would like to know if Weber ever approached any local high school coaches in their search when they hired Mental. I think there is a great coach whose son is on the team I am not sure if he would want the job but I think Weber should at least try to talk to him if they haven't already. I think this state has some really good high school coaches and I don't want to hear about that being to big of jump Mental was only a division 2 head coach for 2 years and one was a covid short season.

Feel that if Weber St. struggles to attract any FBS assistants or FCS coordinator coaches that look promising, it's a stretch but considering a highly successful HS coach is feasible. Except make it a 2 yr. deal with options to renew. Buyouts are for the cash rich pro's & power conference teams.

Aging myself again, but when I first attended, athletics gave HCs one year contracts & renewed them each year. Yes I realize currently that isn't likely or competitive but maybe would still attract a HS coach who was interested in proving himself.
