This is Docs vision at this stage -- not Orr's -- so it would be an even bigger name hire that could get this done to go along Bibby - who we all know won't get a one and done callup. So ex NFLers first coaching gig or big flashy coordinator with buzz.Message Board Hypotheticals...
Scenario 1:
We go 11-1 this season, losing in the National Championship in Nashville, TN to NDSU. Arizona finishes an abysmal season at 2-10 and immediately Hires Brennan Marion as HC. Marion brings much of his staff with him to UofA, as well as the Walter Payton Award winner Jaden Rashada. How do you fill the HC vacancy?
Scenario 2:
We go 5-7 this season, an FBS opportunity never materializes, nor do solid stadium plans. Marion accepts the OC position at Pitt. Guys entering portal left and right, pure chaos. What do we do?
What would you plan for if this is a one and done season for Marion? I'd be inclined to do whatever it took to keep either Merchant or Patterson on board as a HC for continuity's sake in either scenario. The wildcard in a Marion departure scenario??? Troy Taylor, lurking in the shadows eager for a second chance... which I would 100 give to him lol.
Season is less than 60 days away. Has the admin bought the whirly lights and whooppee cushions on Amazon Prime day yet? Or do they need to present to ASI for approval first? This is true. High risk, high reward game we're playing here. Wood went at this with everything he had, so it should have already been a win.
Time will tell.
If Marion wins a Nstl championship I’m okay with him leaving. Not getting all the hate on the Marion hire. Yeah he has optics and a swagger that some folks won't ever get or accept and as evident by his staff hires and recruiting success, he and his staff connects with the culture of the younger generation. Couple that with a President that wants to invest in the program and make noise and you get what we currently have observed.
As far as on the field goes, he was an up and comer coordinator in the FBS ranks that took UNLV to back to back MW conference championships. In fact, prior to Marion's offenses, UNLV had only 2 other winning seasons this millennia, 2000 (7-5, LV Bowl win) and 2013 (7-6 Dallas Bowl loss).
Time will tell if his FBS OC experience will translate to FCS head coach success, but given the talent he and his staff has brought I think odds are high that he will succeed here. If Coach Marion lives up to the hype, he won't be here after this season and I don't think the FBS waiver would make a difference.
