Portland State's Edison wins Rimington Award

Portland, OR (SportsNetwork.com) - Portland State senior Cornelius Edison was named the Rimington Award winner as the top center on the FCS level Wednesday.

Edison, a 6-foot-3, 305-pounder from University Place, Washington, started the last 35 games of his career and earned All-Big Sky Conference first-team honors each of the past two seasons.

He was part of a Portland State line that rushed for over 208 yards per game - third-most in program history - and allowed a conference-low 10 sacks while the Vikings threw the ball 423 times.

Portland State had a previous Rimington Award winner in Brennen Carvalho in 2007.

I'm surprised that given our lack of a good (or at least consistent) passing offense that he was able to win the award. But still really good for him, and for the program.

The Chicago Bears lost a player off of their practice squad today when the Philadelphia Eagles signed center Barrett Jones. Chicago could have elected to promote Jones to their 53 man roster, but they decided to terminate his contract and let him head off to Philly.

To take Jones' place on the practice squad, the Bears signed center Cornelius Edison (6'3", 305), an undrafted free agent from Portland State. Last year as a senior, he was named the Rimington Award winner as the top center in the nation at the NCAA FCS level. He started the last 35 games of his career at center and left guard.

At his pro day Edison put up 25 reps on the bench, his broad jump was 7'7", his vertical was 25' and his 3 cone was 7.84.

The Bears worked out Edison this offseason before the draft.

With the offseason upon them, the Bears signed nine players to reserve/futures contracts, they announced Monday.

Chicago signed cornerback De’Vante Bausby (Pittsburgh State), quarterback Matt Blanchard (Wisconsin-Whitewater), :thumb: center Cornelius Edison (Portland State) :thumb: , linebacker Paul Lasike (BYU), receiver Marcus Lucas (Missouri), linebacker Danny Mason (Texas A&M-Commerce), receiver Nathan Palmer (Northern Illinois), tight end Gannon Sinclair (Missouri State) and guard Martin Wallace (Temple).

Those who sign futures contracts count against the salary cap and 90-man roster limit for the following season’s training camp, even though the new league year doesn’t start until March.

The offensive line didn't play great by any stretch of the imagination, but center Cornelius Edison, entering the lineup as Ted Larsen slid over to right guard to replace Kyle Long, certainly didn't look overmatched with his opportunity. The Bears worked hard in the past week to get Edison up to speed and for quarterback Jay Cutler to become comfortable with him.

No one is saying when Long will return from a labrum injury in one of his shoulders. Is he back for the season opener? Who knows. If he isn't, it sure looks like Edison is a Week 1 starter. If Long is back, it looks like the Bears have a young player to develop and bring along.

"It went good," Edison said. "It was good to get out there and see what we have to improve on for the regular season."

Edison said he was nervous before the game -- the first he has played in since his senior year at Portland State in 2014 -- but he's nervous before every game. Now, he's looking forward to getting into the film room and seeing what needs correcting first.

The Bears liked Edison before the draft last year and brought him to Halas Hall for a pre-draft visit. He didn't have any workouts but did get invited to a local prospects day for the Seahawks. He attended Curtis High School in University Place, Wash. It was in that workout that he tore the ACL in his left knee.

"We were doing a cone drill, I was transitioning from a shuffle to backpedal," he said. "On my second or third step, I must have planted wrong."

There went Edison's chances of being a mid-round draft pick after he was named the top FCS center in the nation. The Seahawks could not even pick up the tab for Edison's rehab, which he did while living with his parents.

"It was definitely eye-opening," he said. "Thinking I am going to be joining an NFL team the next week and I end up at my parents' house rehabbing the whole summer. It was tough seeing training camps on NFL Network and everything. I envisioned myself always being there after college and things didn’t happen that way."

The Bears stayed in semi-regular contact with Edison and their message was simple: Let us know when you are healthy. When he could pass a physical, he was signed to the practice squad on Nov. 30 and finished the season with the team.

"I am grateful for the opportunity," he said.

Now, we'll see how large that opportunity is when the season begins. If the Bears hold Edison out of Thursday's game at Cleveland, it could be a small sign they think he will be needed to start against the Texans.
