CSU in Town

It would be nice if we could afford more than one camera though, it seems like last year when the feed wasn't down we had a couple more.

I would settle for someone who can keep the scoreboard up to date.

I just switched it over to the KFKA feed (straight from KFKA's web site) and it sounds much better than the BigSky version of it. Too bad the audio is about 4 seconds behind the video.

Wow Bears take better shots and get some rebounds.

It is amazing how many offensive rebounds we give up. Is that because of the aggressive defense or do we just not box out under the basket?

I really dont think we box out and it was bad when CSU missed a free throw and we let a CSU player go down the middle and dunk the free throw rebound.

But the entire game was sloppy, we just have to win.

Sweet! Clutch free throws by Figures.

Nice "undefeated" chant.

Good night all (it's 11:15 and I need to get up at 5:25am).

Victory! Sloppy, but I'll take it. Thats 2 regional rivals down, lets go for the sweep!

On a side note we improved to 23 in the mid major poll, and this should help.

Thoughts from courtside....

- It must first be stated that the crowd was AWESOME, really played a 6th man role that BHP usually doesn't play.. I talked to a couple of the players, and if you don't think the support tonight made a difference to them, you're mistaken. Great work.

- It was nice to see UNC finish THROUGH a game. In this great start, we have seen the team let the opposition back into the game in the final 4-5 minutes. In the last Media Timeout, (with roughly 3:30 remaining) the Bears were up 60-58. They finished the game making big time stops on defense with a lot of intensity, getting the boards, then hitting their free throws. Although the squad is 7-0 they are still learning how to win, they passed that test tonight.

-Is there a more underappreciated player than Yahosh Bonner? Looking at his stat line tonight, nothing jumps out. Only 4 points, 3 rebounds and 2 assists, but those numbers don't entail what he means to this team. Time and again he hits the clutch shots for the team, knows how to run the offense etc. His best trait is his defense and how he shuts down the opponent's best guard, (sometimes guards. CSU's Dorian Walker is going to be a star for the team up North, but he never got in a groove. And although he got his 13 points tonight, he never really hurt the Bears. Without Yahosh Bonner, UNC doesn't win this game, period.

-Hate to nitpick at a 7-0 start, but this team has to improve on the boards. Our frontcourt puts it all on the line every night, and they are usually undersized (especially when playing the bigger schools), but too many 2nd chance points keeps the game close, it's demoralizing when a team plays great defense for 30+ seconds, force a miss then allow an easy putback.

-The boxscore sure is fun to look at every game. It's usually the same thing, a couple guys step as the leading scorers, in this case it was Figures with 18, Montgomery with 16 (who had a great game, by the way), and Beitzel with 12. After that, everyone poured in with a few buckets, and a lot of them came in big situations. My favorite trait of this team is that just about anybody can find a way to score at any moment, ask a coach how hard it is to gameplan for that.

-With all due respect to Tom Norton, Tad Boyle could run for the Mayor of Greeley, and probably win in a landslide.

-This weekend will be difficult, @Montana St. and @ Montana on consecutive nights is a very tough task, it will be nice to see UNC on the court against fellow Big Sky teams (and teams in the top half of the conference). But, I think this team has the right attitude and leadership to pull out both wins.

-I will conclude with again mentioning how great the crowd was. Hopefully the students will continue to show past this game. How cool was it to see them storm the floor? After everything this university has gone through in the past 5-10 years academically, athletically, scandal etc. seeing that much excitement was just an awesome sight, and I'm saying that as a 19 year old sophomore. I can't imagine how you Bear alums must feel. Keep coming out to the BHP, we have a chance to be something special. And if you live out of state, you might want to consider making a weekend trip to Greeley to catch a couple of games, this team is that good.

I just got home from the game and what an incredible experience! A completely packed house full of rowdy students! When I was in college I could hear the crickets chirpin' when I would go to the games and there would be 200 people in attendance to watch our team get spanked--by a team like Western State. Butler actually has a legitimate D-I atmosphere--as CSU found out the hard way! haha! At the end of the game, Coach Boyle thanked the crowd for packing the house while the crowd rushed the court! Incredible!

Our team's full court press was awesome to watch and CSU never really seemed to be able to handle it. I have a feeling the teams in the Big Sky are gonna have serious problems with it as well.

As an aside, I did a drive around campus before the game and that wasn't the college I went to! Damn those dorms are nice! The whole campus just looks like a first rate institution now.

Somebodys gotta be a little bit of a contrarian here, so I'll do it. Am I excited about the start? Yes. Have the teams we've beaten been below average for the most part? Yes. Texas Southern (saw em in Boulder since I couldnt get to AFA for that one) is extremely athletic, and looked to me like a group who could do some damage in their league. North Dakota isnt a good team. CSU looks like they've got a long way to go. Air Force is terrible. (They can't play that Oh, well were a service academy we cant get the talent we need card anymore) I don't know enough about the teams from the Hawaii to make any kind of intelligent statement about them. The next two games are big. On the road against competition that will be better than alot of the teams we've played. I see a win in Bozeman and a loss in Missoula. Thoughts?

I think you are right, but what is amazing to me is that UNC now has a basketball team that even on an off day, is good enough to beat a team from an established basketball conference like the WAC or Mountain West. When I was in school (early 90's) we were getting killed by every NCC team. We couldn't even beat Mankato State when we were D-II now we really are running with teams that have actually made the Big Dance in recent years and winning.

Quite a step in the right direction, but I agree, the Big Sky will be tough if we don't improve on our rebounding.

One thing that's dissapointing is that the atmosphere just does not come over on BigSkyTV or on KFKA.

I heard a few boo's during bad calls and some cheers during made shots but that was it (though you could pick up a bit of the "undefeated" chant at the end). You could not tell that there even was a student section 'till they ran on the floor. I wish during timeouts that the camera would pan around the crowd or something.

Also, is the pep band gone? I could not hear them at all.

For once, CSU is envious of UNC. Just check out this quote from Rams head coach Tim Miles in the Denver Post.

"The environment is neat for UNC," Miles said. "It was fun being the villain coming in here. And maybe someday, if we win some games, we'll get Moby like this."

That's great! I know some people were turned away because there was no place for them to sit. Even though, there was some standing room open.

Hopefully this continues and we get the students out. And JJJJ is correct, the campus looks great. I graduated in '02 and it looks nothing like when I was there. So many upgrades every where, not just the dorms. Strangely enough, my favorite part of campus is still the Old Campus (Gunther), and that's been relatively untouched.

Went up north for the game and it was so much fun. The crowd was amazing and I know they let in standing room only but I had friends who showed up 10 mins late for tip off and they were turned away at the door. I really can see Butler being like this consistently...consider were 7-0 and on top of that this was our first home game. Anyone who hadn't heard about this team's success now knows of it and knows that this team has the capability to win the Big Sky!

Very cool, but spot the error:

But Northern Colorado hasn’t played a single home game thus far – and that’ll continue this weekend when the Bears play back-to-back days at Montana State and Montana to open up Big Sky play.

Yeah ... beggars can't be choosers when you're getting national notice. :)

Also, Tad was on The Irv & Joe Show today on ESPN1600. I didn't hear it (they don't have online streaming), but he was on there right before 3.
